Neither Google’s Nano Banana family nor ChatGPT Images has a proven universal edge for editing and consistency. Google offers model-specific reference-image controls, while OpenAI says ChatGPT Images is better at making targeted changes without disturbing details such as lighting, composition, or a person’s appearance. Those are company descriptions, not results from a controlled head-to-head test. The better fit depends on your task—and on the exact model and interface you use.
First, identify the models you are comparing
“Nano Banana” no longer refers to just one model. Google’s current image-generation guide describes a family, and capabilities differ by model. OpenAI’s December 16, 2025 announcement describes the new ChatGPT Images experience as powered by GPT Image 1.5. Model names and availability can change, so check the current documentation when you compare them.

Which is better for editing an existing image?
For a targeted change—such as replacing a background while preserving a person—OpenAI says ChatGPT Images aims to change only what was requested while retaining details including lighting, composition, and people’s appearance. It lists actions such as adding, removing, combining, blending, and transposing image elements. Google supports editing images generated in Gemini or uploaded to Gemini Apps by asking for changes in natural language. Its API documentation also describes image editing across the Nano Banana family. Google’s August 26, 2025 launch announcement described Gemini 2.5 Flash Image as enabling “targeted transformation and precise local edits with natural language”; that statement refers to that model at launch, not every current family member. The official descriptions do not settle which tool preserves more of an image in practice. If that matters, compare the same source image and edit prompt in the exact versions you plan to use. Inspect not just the requested change, but also whether faces, clothing, object placement, lighting, and background details shifted.
Which is better for consistency across edits or references?
Google documents explicit reference-image workflows, with the number and type of supported references varying by model. Nano Banana 2.1 supports up to four character references and ten high-fidelity object references; Nano Banana Pro supports up to five character references, six high-fidelity object references, and three style references. Gemini Apps also lets users upload multiple images to create a new image based on them. However, Google says the speed-focused Nano Banana 2 Lite is not designed for multiple image references or multiple edits. OpenAI says ChatGPT Images maintains details such as a person’s appearance across inputs, outputs, and follow-up edits. Its announcement does not specify a comparable numeric reference limit. Text, output options, speed, and watermarks
- Text in images: OpenAI says the December 2025 release improved instruction following and dense or small text rendering. Google’s API guide describes text rendering as a capability, but the documentation cited here does not establish a neutral comparison of accuracy. Test the exact wording and layout you need. - Speed: OpenAI says the new ChatGPT Images generation can be up to four times faster than its previous version. “Up to” is an upper-bound company claim, not a guarantee for a particular prompt or account, and it is not a speed comparison with Google. How to make a fair comparison for your workflow
- Choose the exact models and interfaces. Record whether you are using Gemini Apps or the Gemini API, and which Nano Banana model; for ChatGPT, identify the Images experience being used. Features and access can differ by product.
- Use the same starting image and prompt. For an edit, give both tools the same original and ask for one specific change—for example, “replace the background with a plain light-gray studio backdrop; keep the person, pose, clothing, and lighting unchanged.”
- Test a follow-up edit. Ask each tool to make a second change without altering the first. Compare whether the person or product and the requested details remain recognizable and intact.
- Test references separately. If your task involves a character, product, or style guide, provide the same reference assets where the chosen model supports them. Record how many you supplied and distinguish reference limits from the quality of the result.
- Judge the criteria that matter. Check preservation of unedited areas, identity or product consistency, instruction following, text accuracy if relevant, and time to usable output. A speed comparison is meaningful only when prompts, inputs, settings, and measurement conditions match.
- Check access before choosing. Gemini Apps Help notes that availability can depend on eligibility and location. Confirm access, plan requirements, and model availability for your region and interface before adopting a workflow. (Gemini Apps Help)
Verdict: choose by task, not by brand
Start with ChatGPT Images if your main question is whether a conversational tool can make a narrow edit while retaining the original image’s details; OpenAI explicitly describes that goal, but does not guarantee every result. Start with a Nano Banana model if your workflow depends on choosing among Google’s documented reference-image capabilities, and match the model to the number and type of references you need. Neither is established as the overall winner for editing or consistency by a controlled, independent comparison. For a consequential workflow, the same-input test above is more useful than a blanket ranking.
