Google Messages already handles the core RCS features many Galaxy owners expect, but replacing Samsung Messages is about more than sending texts. These five wishlist improvements—ranked as editorial priorities, not a surveyed ranking—would make the switch feel more Galaxy-native and make device continuity and migration easier to understand.
What changes when Samsung Messages is discontinued?
Samsung’s US support guidance says Samsung Messages stopped being supported starting in July 2026 on Galaxy devices running Android 12 or higher. After July 6, 2026, the app is unusable for sending messages other than emergency calls or contacts. Devices running Android 11 or lower remain functional under that US guidance. This is not a worldwide retirement notice: Samsung India says availability varies by software version and phone model. Samsung US support and Samsung India support describe different regional and device conditions.
Samsung says conversations transfer automatically to Google Messages. Depending on the amount of message data, the transfer may take up to approximately 24 hours. On phones released before 2022, RCS may pause temporarily during the switch; Samsung says it can resume if both parties use Google Messages. SMS and MMS remain available. Samsung’s US transition guidance is the source for these details.
The wishlist below focuses on what could make Google Messages feel more complete on Galaxy phones—not on missing basics. Google Messages already supports RCS features such as high-resolution photos and videos, typing indicators, read receipts, Wi-Fi or mobile-data messaging, and group controls. Google says everyone in a conversation must have RCS enabled to use RCS benefits; end-to-end encryption applies to eligible conversations with other Google Messages users. 1. More Galaxy-native customization
Google Messages should make it easier to tune conversation colors, backgrounds, notification sounds, and compact or comfortable layouts using controls that fit naturally with One UI. The aim is not to reproduce every old Samsung Messages detail. It is to give Galaxy owners clear, visible choices so the app feels at home on their phone rather than like a generic replacement.
This is a request for stronger Galaxy-specific identity, not a claim that Google Messages has no customization. The improvement would be a coherent set of controls that is easy to find and behaves consistently with the rest of the Galaxy interface.
2. A more useful, user-controlled inbox
Let people organize conversations into personal, work, and automated-message categories, with straightforward ways to pin important threads and control how categories appear. This is a forward-looking suggestion, not a claim about what Samsung Messages did or did not offer.

Good organization should remain optional: users who want one chronological list should be able to keep it. For those managing school, work, family, and service notifications in the same inbox, clear categories could reduce the effort of finding a conversation without changing how texting works.
3. Reliable texting from a Galaxy tablet or watch
Phone-to-tablet continuity deserves clearer setup and status reporting. Samsung says its former “Allow texting on this tablet” Message Continuity workflow is disrupted by the app’s retirement. It documents Google Messages setup for tablets, but Samsung’s Call & text on other devices path does not work with Verizon and AT&T phones and may be unavailable on other carrier models. Google also says legacy Galaxy tablets and watches cannot use RCS for one-to-one conversations or create new RCS groups. Samsung’s transition guidance and Google’s Galaxy-device help set out these limits.
Google Messages should make the setup path predictable across supported Galaxy devices and explain what is missing when pairing or carrier support is unavailable. A useful status screen would distinguish a phone that is not connected from a device or carrier that does not support a feature, instead of leaving users to guess why messages are not appearing.

What watch support looks like now
Samsung says Galaxy Watch4 and newer can use Google Messages when paired with a Galaxy phone that has Google Messages set as the default messaging app and remote connection enabled. Older Tizen watches, including Galaxy Watch3, cannot use Google Messages; Samsung says they can still read and send texts, but will not show full message history after discontinuation. These are device-specific conditions, not a promise of identical watch support across all Galaxy models. Samsung’s US support page describes the compatibility guidance.

4. Migration controls with visible recovery
Automatic transfer is convenient, but a visible progress indicator would help users tell whether their history is still moving or the transfer has finished. Google Messages could also offer a clear post-transfer check and a documented recovery route if a large migration appears to stall. These are proposed safeguards, not evidence that Samsung’s transfer routinely fails.
Samsung says the automatic conversation transfer can take up to approximately 24 hours depending on message volume. A clear status and verification step would give users something practical to check during that window rather than leaving them unsure whether older conversations have arrived. 5. Clearer controls for optional features and rollouts
Google Messages should make optional features, their rollout status, and related settings easy to locate and control independently. A concise, in-app explanation of whether a feature is available on a given device—and which controls the user can change—would make the app easier to navigate as capabilities arrive at different times.
This is a user-control recommendation, not a claim about a specific AI capability or data practice. The cited transition guidance does not establish detailed AI or privacy settings, so the practical request is for discoverable controls and clear explanations rather than assumptions about how those features work.

Google Messages already covers much of what people associate with modern messaging. With RCS enabled for everyone in the conversation, Google lists high-resolution media, typing and read status, messaging over Wi-Fi or mobile data, and group naming and membership controls. Encryption is available in eligible conversations between Google Messages users; it is not a blanket guarantee for every message or recipient. RCS can also connect Android and iPhone users, but cross-platform encryption is not universal. Google announced on May 11, 2026 that end-to-end encrypted RCS between Android and iPhone users was beginning a beta rollout for iPhone users on iOS 26.5 with supported carriers and Android users on the latest Google Messages. Google says eligible conversations receive encryption over time, subject to supported devices and encryption being enabled. Google’s announcement outlines those rollout conditions.
Media quality can also depend on settings. Samsung says users may need to turn off “Send photos faster” or select “Original quality” in Google Messages to send higher-resolution media; actual image quality can vary. Samsung’s September 8, 2026 cross-ecosystem guidance covers the setting and notes that RCS supports media sharing, reactions, and adding or removing group members across Android and iOS.
