Google Meet’s picture-in-picture (PiP) keeps a compact call window visible while you work in another tab or app, while pinning lets you choose which people or presentations appear prominently in the meeting. Google announced both features for Chrome on the web on June 16, 2022; current Google Help instructions describe how to use them today.
What Google announced in 2022—and what applies now
Google Workspace Updates announced PiP and multi-pinning for Google Meet in Chrome on the web on June 16, 2022. At launch, Google said the floating PiP window could show up to four attendee video tiles. That was a launch-era detail; current Google Help does not say whether four remains the PiP limit, so it should not be treated as a confirmed current maximum.
The current instructions below are for Meet on a computer using Chrome. Google Help says PiP is available to Google Workspace customers, Workspace Individual subscribers, and people using personal Google Accounts. It documents PiP for Chrome on a computer, not as a phone feature. The 2022 announcement also listed legacy G Suite Basic and Business users as eligible during that launch rollout; that historical rollout note is not a statement of current availability.

Open PiP manually
- Join a Meet call in Chrome on your computer.
- Click More options in the meeting, then select Open picture-in-picture.
- Move the compact Meet window by dragging its top edge. Resize it by dragging an edge.
- To return to the full meeting, click Back to tab. This closes PiP but does not end the call; click Hang up to leave.
Set PiP to appear automatically
Meet can show PiP automatically when you switch tabs or share a window or your entire screen. For the switch-tabs behavior, Chrome must have permission for automatic picture-in-picture, and Meet’s automatic PiP setting must allow it.

- In Chrome, open the site information controls for Meet and grant the Automatic picture-in-picture permission.
- In Meet, open the automatic PiP setting and choose one of the available options: Never automatically show, Only when I switch tabs, Only when I screen share (window & entire screen), or Always automatically show.
The browser permission is required for PiP when switching tabs. Google’s Help instructions also list automatic PiP when sharing a window or the entire screen.

PiP keeps several meeting controls and views accessible without returning to the full tab:

- Turn your microphone or camera on or off.
- Raise your hand, read and send in-meeting messages, and toggle captions.
- View your presentation as it appears to other participants.
- Exit the call.
You cannot start presenting from PiP. Start the presentation in the full meeting first, then open PiP. Chat, hand-raise, and join-request notifications remain available in PiP; other notifications, such as breakout-room notifications, require returning to the full meeting.
How to pin multiple people or presentations
Pinning controls what appears prominently in the meeting layout; it is separate from the floating PiP window. Current Google Help says an individual can pin up to six items, including participants or presentations, for their own view. To pin, use the pin control on the participant or presentation tile in the meeting. Pinning requires joining with full audio and video and is unavailable in Companion mode.

Hosts and co-hosts cannot pin for everyone in Companion mode or a live stream. A participant can manually unpin a tile that a host pinned for everyone.

- Use PiP when you need to work in another tab or application while keeping the call visible. The documented option is Chrome on a computer.
- Use personal pins when you want particular participants or presentations to stand out in your own meeting layout.
- Use moderated pins when you are a host or co-host and need to set the prominent tiles for others, keeping in mind the joining-device limitations above.
These are complementary features: PiP keeps the meeting accessible outside its tab, while pins shape which tiles stand out within the meeting.
