Google’s Nano Banana 2.1 is an updated image-generation and conversational-editing model. Google says it improves visual quality, prompt adherence, text rendering, and consistency across multi-turn edits, while adding more flexible editing workflows. Its reported evaluations show gains in several categories, but Google also lists failures involving small text, subject identity, masking, spatial directions, and factuality—so generated images still need review.
What is Nano Banana 2.1?
Google AI for Developers describes Nano Banana 2.1 as its latest high-efficiency image-generation and conversational-editing model. Its API model ID is gemini-nano-banana-2.1. It is software available through Google products and developer services, not a physical device. Google’s developer documentation was last updated October 6, 2026 UTC, and Google DeepMind’s model card is dated October 2026.
Google lists availability through the Gemini app, Google AI Studio, Gemini API, Google Search AI Mode, Google Ads, Google Flow, and Google Stitch. The exact features and access conditions can differ across those services, so check the current interface for the product you plan to use. Google also says downstream providers can access its models through an API; it does not specify a required hardware or software setup for using the model.

Image quality, text, and wide formats
Google documents image output at 1K, 2K, and 4K resolutions, with 1K as the default. It says the model improves visual quality and realism, prompt adherence, text rendering, and infographic-layout accuracy. Google also says it fixed tiling artifacts in wide and panoramic aspect ratios at 2K and 4K, including 1:4, 4:1, 1:8, and 8:1.
More references and steadier subjects
The model supports combining up to 14 reference images. Google specifies character consistency for up to four characters and object fidelity for up to ten objects. These are supported capabilities, not a guarantee that every generated image will preserve a subject’s identity or details perfectly.
Search grounding and adjustable Thinking
Google lists Google Web and Image Search grounding and configurable Thinking levels: minimal, medium (the default), and high. Its API documentation lists text, image, video, and PDF as supported inputs, and text and image as outputs. Image generation, Search grounding, and Thinking are supported; audio generation and function calling are not. Generated images include a SynthID watermark.

What Google’s evaluations show
Google DeepMind’s October 2026 model card reports Elo-style scores from side-by-side human evaluations for image generation and editing. The table shows the reported results for Nano Banana 2.1 with and without Thinking, compared with Nano Banana 2 and Nano Banana Pro.

Google says it used a single-sided AutoRater for factuality. These are Google’s own evaluations, not independent comparisons. The category results are not a universal ranking: for example, Nano Banana 2.1 scores higher than Nano Banana Pro in the listed General Editing evaluation, but that does not establish that it is best for every editing task.

Which Google image model should you choose?
Google positions Nano Banana 2.1 as a high-efficiency model and Nano Banana Pro as the premium option for complex visual tasks. Nano Banana 2.1 may be a fit when you want image generation or conversational editing, including workflows that combine several references. The right choice depends on the task and where you intend to use it, not on a single benchmark result.
- For quick generation or iterative editing: Consider Nano Banana 2.1, then assess whether the output meets your needs.
- For multi-character or multi-reference work: Nano Banana 2.1 has specific reported capabilities and Google benchmark results in these categories, but check identity and reference details in the result.
- For complex visual tasks: Google positions Nano Banana Pro as its premium choice; compare the models in the service you use rather than assuming one category score settles the decision.
- For API integration: Check the Gemini API documentation and current service terms for the model ID, available controls, access, and pricing.
What still goes wrong?
Google’s model card says small text—especially at 1K—long paragraphs, and page-length text can render poorly. Character consistency is not perfect between reference inputs and generated outputs. The model can also partially follow masked or doodle-based edits, leave ink behind, or rarely preserve the input subject’s pose. Google notes that it can confuse left and right, and that advanced world knowledge, 3D reasoning, and factuality remain limited. The model card also flags possible hallucinations, slow responses, and timeouts.

Before publishing an image, inspect any text, multi-subject scene, spatial arrangement, or factual depiction. Treat the result as a draft when accuracy or faithful reproduction matters, and revise or regenerate it if a detail is wrong.

Where can you try it, and what does it cost?
Google lists the Gemini app, Google AI Studio, Gemini API, Google Search AI Mode, Google Ads, Flow, and Stitch as distribution routes. The documentation does not establish a single consumer entitlement, free-tier limit, API price, or subscription requirement that applies across all of them. Check the current pricing and account interface for the specific service before relying on a particular allowance or cost.
