No. As of October 2026, Google’s Keep help pages do not describe a password or PIN for an individual note, and a June 2026 answer in Google’s Docs Editors Community said that locking a single Keep note is not currently possible. The “hidden Android feature” you may have read about appears to be a different thing: reported references in Keep to taking notes from the lock screen. That would make capturing a note faster. It would not put a password in front of an existing note.

Where the “no per-note lock” answer comes from

Two kinds of source point the same way. Google’s official Keep help documentation covers Keep’s settings, sharing, and note operations, and it does not list a per-note passcode. The clearest direct statement comes from the community forum, where a volunteer Product Expert answered a question about locking one note. That answer is not a Google product announcement, but it reflects the same gap in the feature set.

The wording readers use shows what they are asking for. One community question reads, “how do I lock notes so that it requires a passcode to open it,” and another asks for “a option in google keep notes to lock a individual note.” Both describe a prompt that appears before a particular note opens. A phone lock screen does not do that for one note, and neither does anything else Keep currently offers.

What Keep does offer on Android

Keep’s Android help covers a set of features that capture, organize, and tidy notes. None of them restricts access to an individual note.

  • Widgets put note capture on the home screen.
  • Labels group notes by topic.
  • Colors mark notes visually.
  • Pins keep a note at the top of your list. A pin is not a PIN code. It only changes where a note appears.
  • Sorting, archiving, and deletion manage what stays in your main view and what you keep.

Pinning and archiving can make a sensitive note harder to stumble across, but they do not block anyone who opens the app.

What “private” means in Keep

Google’s Keep privacy guidance says: “The content you save on Keep is private to you, from others, unless you choose to share it.” That sentence governs who can see a note. It does not add a second step when you open one.

Sharing is the exception that matters. Collaborators on a shared note can edit it, so anyone you invite can change content, not just read it. Before you share a note with sensitive content, check who is on it and remove anyone who should not have access.

The privacy guarantee also has a limit. Anyone who can open your unlocked phone or sign in to your Google account can reach your notes through the app. The protection Keep describes is about other people’s access through its normal interface, not a lock that holds up against someone already inside your device or account.

The hidden lock-screen feature

Android Authority reported finding hidden references in Keep to possible lock-screen note taking. In that report, the idea is to write a note straight from the lock screen without unlocking the phone. The feature is about starting a note quickly. It is not about reading an existing note that is protected by a password.

Three points keep this in proportion. The report is secondary coverage, not a Google announcement. The report itself says: “An official release timeline remains unknown.” And hidden code references do not confirm that a feature will reach every device, app version, or region. If the feature appears, the setting you need will be in your version of the Keep app, and you should confirm it there rather than relying on a headline.

  1. Decide which notes are truly sensitive, such as account recovery codes, passwords, or identity details. Keep those out of ordinary notes if you can.
  2. Review sharing on each note that holds sensitive content. Remove collaborators who do not need access, because they can edit the note.
  3. Rely on your phone’s screen lock for device access. Use a PIN, pattern, or biometric unlock, and confirm that it locks after a short idle time.
  4. If you need a separate password for individual notes, move only those notes to another app after checking it. The checklist below explains what to verify.
  5. Send feature feedback through Keep if you want a per-note lock. The sources do not say whether a request will be acted on, so treat it as a request, not a promise.

Checking another notes app before moving sensitive data

Many notes apps advertise encryption or locking, and the details vary widely. Before you move anything, confirm the following in that app’s own documentation:

  • Whether a password or PIN can be set on an individual note, and whether that lock applies on every device you use.
  • What unlocks it: a separate password, a device biometric, or your phone’s screen lock. Each has a different risk if someone else has your phone.
  • Whether locked notes sync across devices, and whether they remain readable on a new device.
  • How account recovery works if you forget the lock, and whether the provider can read your content.
  • Who can see or edit a note once it is shared, and whether a locked note can be shared at all.

The title’s premise is that a hidden setting exists in Keep. It does not, at least not in documented form. Keep remains a fast, convenient capture tool with privacy by default. If you need per-note protection today, the answer lies in another app’s documented lock behavior, checked before you rely on it.
