Yes—Google Family Link lets parents manage a child’s approved contacts and, on supported devices, restrict calls and texts to those contacts. The setting is optional, applies only through supported communication apps, and requires a compatible device: an Android phone running Android 14 or later, or a smartwatch running Wear OS 5 or later.
What Google’s contact controls do
Google announced parent-managed contacts on February 12, 2025, as part of a set of family safety updates. The feature lets a parent add contacts to a child’s device and choose to limit phone calls and text conversations to those contacts. Google said rollout would begin the following month; current compatibility and setup details are on Google’s contacts help page.
This is a communications limit, not a way for parents to read all of a child’s messages. Google discussed a separate sensitive-content warning for Google Messages in the same announcement; that feature has different settings and should not be confused with contact approval. How to approve contacts in Family Link
- Open the Family Link app on the parent’s device.
- Select the child’s profile.
- Go to Controls, then Contacts, calls & text.
- Choose the communication permission you want and add the contacts the child may reach.
Family Link offers choices that include unrestricted communication, parent-added contacts plus limited groups, or only contacts added by the parent. Using Family Link does not automatically turn on the strict contacts-only option; select the setting that fits your family. Google says parents can add up to 100 contacts. Depending on the selected setting, a child may request permission to use a new number, and the parent can approve or deny it. See Google’s setup instructions.

These requirements and app details come from Google’s current contacts guidance. The contacts are intended to apply on the child’s current and future devices that support the feature; that does not mean every device or app inherits the restriction.
What the restriction does not cover
Contact limits are not a universal calling or messaging firewall. If the child can use another communication app, such as WhatsApp or Google Chat, they may still contact people outside the parent-managed list through that app. Parents who want broader limits should review access to other communication apps separately in Family Link or on the device.

Google also notes limitations involving RCS Business Messaging and messages to email addresses when restrictions are active. Check the supported-app and exception details in Google’s help guidance rather than assuming every message type is blocked.

Family Link also offers tools for managing screen time, apps, content, account settings, and location. Their availability and setup requirements can differ by device, connectivity, and region. Google says Family Link may be unavailable in some regions; its Family Link product page and parental-controls help page describe the wider service.

Google’s own Google Play listing cautions: “While Family Link provides tools to manage your child’s online experience and keep them safer online, it does not make the internet safe.” Contact approval is one practical boundary, not a substitute for checking which apps a child can use or talking through online safety.
