Google ended its Steam for Chromebook Beta on January 1, 2026. After that date, games installed through the beta were no longer available to play on the Chromebook. Google’s notice concerns playability on the device; it does not say that games purchased through a Steam account were deleted.
What happened on January 1, 2026?
The dedicated ChromeOS beta that let people install and play certain Steam games locally on supported Chromebooks concluded on January 1, 2026. Google’s notice says games installed as part of the beta would no longer be playable on the Chromebook after the cutoff. The notice does not say Steam account purchases were removed or deleted.
That date has passed. The beta’s installer and supported-device list should be treated as historical, not as a route to current Steam support on ChromeOS. Google did not provide a named spokesperson or explanation for ending the beta, so there is no confirmed motive to report.
What Steam for Chromebook Beta was
Google and Valve collaborated on the effort. Google ChromeOS Product Manager Zach Alcorn announced the beta on November 2, 2022, alongside ChromeOS 108. The announcement said the ChromeOS gaming team had worked with Valve on an earlier alpha and used community gameplay reports while developing the beta. Google’s beta announcement described broader availability, user-experience and performance improvements, and work involving power management, storage, DirectX 12 and Vulkan 1.3. Those details describe the beta’s development at launch; they are not assurances that it remains available or supported.

Why the beta did not work on every Chromebook
Google’s historical minimum requirements were an Intel i3 or Ryzen 3 processor, at least 8 GB of RAM and at least 128 GB of storage. Meeting those specifications alone was not enough: Google maintained a specific supported-device list, and said the installer would appear only on devices that met the beta requirements. The list included selected models from Acer, ASUS, Dell, Framework, HP and Lenovo. These were requirements for the beta, not a guarantee of present-day Steam support or a buying specification that can restore the discontinued feature. Google’s Chromebook Steam help page contains the historical device and beta information.
Compatibility was also limited by game and configuration. Google described its list of compatible titles as games that had performed well on devices meeting the beta’s minimum hardware requirements, and warned about beta limitations, known bugs and performance issues. A game appearing on that list was not a promise of identical results on every supported Chromebook.

What Google advised for performance
- Lower the game’s resolution and graphics settings if performance is poor.
- Close other applications running in the background to free up resources.
- Check the specific device and title rather than assuming that a Chromebook’s processor and memory alone establish compatibility.
What Chromebook owners can do instead
The end of this beta is not the end of gaming on Chromebooks generally. Android games and cloud game streaming are separate categories of options. Neither should be assumed to include the former Steam beta’s catalog: check the exact game in the relevant Android store or cloud service’s current library.

Google’s former beta instructions advised against installing Steam or Steam Link from the Play Store, warning that doing so could cause performance issues. That warning applied to using those apps as a substitute for the dedicated beta; it does not mean Android games generally stopped working. For streaming, service availability, supported titles, costs and terms vary, so verify them directly with the provider before subscribing. A controller may help with some games, but confirm that the Chromebook, service and individual game support it.

Does buying a gaming Chromebook bring the beta back?
No. A Chromebook with stronger hardware does not restore a discontinued beta. If you are choosing a Chromebook for Android gaming or streaming, compare the device against the current requirements of the games or service you intend to use, and check its available memory, storage, display and controller support accordingly.
