Google shut down the simple websites created inside Google Business Profiles in March 2024. Google’s notice said visitors would be redirected to the profile until June 10, 2024; that temporary redirect period has ended. If your business still needs a standalone website, create or maintain one with a separate site service, then replace the website URL in your Business Profile.
What happened to my Google Business Profile website?
The shutdown affected websites built through the Business Profile website builder. Google’s notice, reproduced in Google’s support community material, said: “In March 2024, websites made with Google Business Profiles will be turned off and customers visiting your site will be redirected to your Business Profile instead.”
The dates in that notice are historical:
| Date | What it meant |
|---|---|
| March 2024 | Google turned off sites made with the Business Profile website builder. |
| June 10, 2024 | The stated end of Google’s temporary redirect period. A redirect should not be expected in 2026. |
This was a specific builder shutdown, not proof that every site associated with a Google product was deleted. A separately created, domain-based website is a different case. Check where the site was built and hosted instead of assuming that seeing “Google” in a product name identifies the affected service.
What your Business Profile can do now
Point customers to a replacement website
You can add your current site to the profile’s website field. Google requires the complete address, including http:// or https://. The profile must be verified for editing, and some businesses may have to complete verification first.
#1 Best Overall
- Sign in to the Google Account linked to the Business Profile.
- Open the profile in Google Search or Google Maps.
- Select Edit profile.
- Enter the full replacement URL in the website field.
- Save the change, then open the public profile to confirm that the link reaches the intended page.
Make sure the replacement site does not block Googlebot. Google’s help guidance also directs site owners to Search Console when checking for possible site penalties; that is separate from the Business Profile website field.
Add links for bookings, orders and services
A standalone site is not always necessary for every customer action. Depending on business category and eligibility, Google Business Profile controls can include:
- One link to a menu or service list.
- Up to 10 links in each applicable transaction category for appointments, reservations, food orders and shopping orders.
- A preferred link when multiple links are available.
Google may also add certain provider links automatically. Availability and controls vary by business and region, so check the options displayed in your profile rather than assuming every category supports every action.

1. Confirm what was actually shut down
Find the old address, sign-in account and service used to create it. A site hosted on a separately purchased domain or another website platform should be evaluated under that provider’s terms, not automatically treated as a Business Profile website.

2. Decide what the business needs
Write down the pages and actions customers require before choosing a platform:
- A basic information site with hours, location, services and contact details.
- Appointment or reservation requests.
- Menus and food ordering.
- An online catalog and checkout.
- Multiple locations, staff accounts or more advanced content.
3. Choose a separate site service
Google’s shutdown notice listed Wix, Squarespace, GoDaddy, Google Sites, Shopify, Durable, Weebly, Strikingly and WordPress as examples. The list is not a ranking or endorsement, and the notice does not establish current prices, features or migration terms.
Rank #4
| Decision area | Questions to ask |
|---|---|
| Business function | Does the service support the required pages, booking, reservations, ordering or sales workflow? |
| Domain control | Who owns the domain account, controls DNS and renews the domain? |
| Migration | Can pages, media, products and customer data be exported if you change providers? |
| Operations | Who will update content, apply security fixes and recover the account? |
| Cost | What are the recurring platform, domain, transaction and add-on charges under the current terms? |
4. Rebuild and check the destination
At minimum, the replacement should work on a phone, identify the business accurately, show current contact details and provide the relevant booking, ordering or service information. Test every call-to-action from a normal customer perspective before publishing the new URL.

5. Update and monitor the profile
After saving the new URL, test it from both Google Search and Maps. Recheck the profile after edits or ownership changes, and review action links periodically because provider availability and business eligibility can change.

Do not rely on a former Business Profile website address in 2026. Google’s stated redirect window ended on June 10, 2024. If you separately registered or hosted a domain outside the Business Profile builder, verify its status with the domain registrar or hosting provider; the shutdown notice does not establish that every domain-based Google-related site was affected.
Common mistakes to avoid
- Leaving the old website address in marketing materials after the redirect period has ended.
- Changing the profile URL without checking that the destination is live and mobile-friendly.
- Assuming a platform named in Google’s notice is recommended or has a particular current price.
- Giving a third-party booking or ordering provider control of a domain without documenting ownership and renewal access.
- Blocking Googlebot on the replacement site, which can interfere with crawling.
What this means for businesses in 2026
The Business Profile remains a discovery and action surface, but it is no longer a website host. Use the profile for accurate business information and eligible direct-action links; use a separately managed website when you need pages, content ownership or broader transactions. The practical priority is to verify what was shut down, publish a dependable replacement where necessary, and keep the profile’s website and action links current.
