Google’s announced mobile removal of Google Assistant began on September 3, 2026, and may take a few weeks to reach all users. That change is for mobile devices; it does not mean Google Assistant is disappearing from Nest and Google Home speakers on the same date. Google built-in cars are also stated to continue beyond September 3. Gemini is the successor on mobile, while Gemini for Home is a separate, staged transition for compatible speakers and displays.
When is Google Assistant going away?
Google says the removal of Assistant from mobile devices starts September 3, 2026, and may take a few weeks to roll out. That date has passed, but the announcement describes a start date, not a confirmed completion date for every device. The change should therefore be understood as an ongoing mobile rollout whose timing can vary.
This is a later timeline than Google’s March 2025 announcement, which had projected that Assistant would stop being accessible on most mobile devices later that year. The 2025 projection was superseded by Google’s 2026 update.
Is Google Assistant being removed from my phone?
On mobile, Google is moving users toward Gemini as the successor assistant. Check the assistant options available on your device and in the relevant Google apps to see what is currently offered. The exact rollout may vary by device and user.

Google’s March 2025 announcement said devices that did not meet Gemini’s minimum system requirements would retain Assistant functionality “at this time.” That was a time-qualified exception, not a guarantee of permanent Assistant access or a current end date for every phone, tablet, watch, or headphone.
Will my Google Nest speaker or display stop working?
No—not because of the mobile cutoff. Google says the mobile change does not affect Nest and Google Home speakers and displays, or other Assistant-enabled speakers and displays. Gemini for Home is a separate transition: compatible devices move from Assistant when a household upgrades, as access expands through early access by country and language.

Google announced the Home transition in August 2025, saying Gemini for Home would replace Assistant on existing speakers and displays over time. It has not said that every household has already been moved.

Check your home’s eligibility
- Open the Google Home app and look in Home settings for a Gemini for Home invitation or banner.
- Confirm that your account is a supported personal account, and check the home’s country and language against Google’s current eligibility information.
- Check that your device is supported and meets the required firmware version. Google lists Cast firmware 3.76 or higher for first-party speakers and Fuchsia firmware 28 or higher for displays.
- Update the Google Home app; on Android, update Speech Recognition and Synthesis before setup.
- Review the app’s assistant status, which identifies the home as using either “Google Assistant” or “Gemini for Home voice assistant.”
Can I switch back to Google Assistant?
No. Google’s current Home help page says, “Once you switch your home to Gemini for Home voice assistant, it can’t switch back to Google Assistant.” The choice applies to the household, not just one speaker. Compatible devices already in the home—and compatible devices added later—will use Gemini after the switch.
Which speakers and displays work with Gemini for Home?
Google lists these devices for the complete Gemini for Home voice assistant, provided they meet minimum firmware requirements:
- Google Home Speaker (2026)
- Nest Hub (2nd gen)
- Nest Audio
- Nest Mini (2nd gen)
- Nest Hub Max
- Nest Hub (1st gen)
- Google Home Mini (1st gen)
Google says older devices—including Nest Wifi point, Google Home Max, Google Home, and third-party speakers—support most Gemini for Home features but not Gemini Live. Consult Google’s current compatibility page for the exact feature support of a particular device.

What features are free, and what requires a subscription?
Google lists smart-home controls, media search and playback, alarms and timers, calendar, notes, lists, reminders, and general questions as no-cost Gemini for Home basics. Its current comparison assigns Gemini Live to Google Home Premium Standard and Advanced; camera livestream and history search, along with Home Brief, are shown under Advanced. Entitlements may change, so check Google’s current plan comparison for what is included.
Google has also described natural-language smart-home control, camera summaries, Ask Home, and automation creation as Gemini for Home capabilities. These are Google’s product descriptions; availability can vary by plan, device, country, and rollout status.
Can I still use Google Assistant in my car?
Google says cars with Google built-in continue beyond September 3, 2026. That statement is specific to Google built-in cars; it should not be read as a guarantee about every phone-connected car system or every other vehicle category.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesDo I need to buy a new Google speaker?
No new hardware purchase is established as a requirement for Gemini for Home. Google lists several existing Nest and Google Home models as compatible. The Google Home Speaker (2026) is one compatible option, not a required remedy for the mobile Assistant change. Check your existing device’s compatibility and firmware before considering a replacement.
