Google Research and Harvard researchers mapped about one cubic millimeter of human cerebral cortex at synaptic resolution—not an entire brain. Their reconstruction captures cells and connections in a tiny sample removed during epilepsy surgery, revealing intricate wiring while leaving open what many of its unusual structures do.
What did Google and Harvard map?
The team reconstructed a small piece of the left anterior temporal lobe, a region of the cerebral cortex. The tissue was removed from one person during surgery for epilepsy. Harvard describes the sample as roughly one-millionth of the brain’s volume, so the work is a detailed map of a fragment, not a complete human connectome. Google Research and Harvard’s account describe the project and its scope.
How was the brain tissue reconstructed?
Researchers used serial-section electron microscopy, imaging more than 5,000 thin sections, each approximately 30 nanometers thick. Capturing the images took 326 days. Computational tools then aligned the sections and reconstructed cells, their branches and synaptic contacts in three dimensions. The result is a dataset of approximately 1.4 petabytes—about 1,400 terabytes—according to the NIH summary and Google Research.

What did the map reveal?
A dense network of cells and synapses
The NIH describes approximately 57,000 cells and almost 150 million synapses in the reconstruction. Google’s summary estimates about 16,000 neurons, 32,000 glia and 8,000 blood-vessel cells, and reports 150 million synapses. The H01 release page separately lists 183 million annotated synapses. These figures come from different project summaries and annotation contexts; they should not be collapsed into one definitive synapse count.

This allows for comprehensive neuroanatomy study of the cerebral hemispheres, brain stem and cerebellum. The 4 detachable parts are held together using magnets making it the safest model for even kids to use and study.
- 【Wide Application】 Our realistic human brain anatomical model 2-piece colour coded can as an ideal study tool for medical anatomy teachers or students, and children's interest development learning tool, which can be used in teaching explanation, doctor-patient communication, model display, learning research or laboratory exhibition.
Most axon-to-cell contacts had a single synapse
Google reports that 96.5% of axon-to-target-cell contacts had one synapse, while 0.092% had four or more. A small number of neuron pairs were connected by dozens of synapses; at least one pair had more than 50. The purpose of these unusually strong connections has not been established. Google’s project summary gives these measurements.
Unexpected shapes and orientations
The researchers described triangular neurons in the deepest layer with mirror-related orientations; Google reports that 77 percent of the triangular neurons described in that layer fell into one of two such categories. They also observed unusual whorls in axons. The study authors suggested that some of these structures could matter functionally, but their roles remain unknown.

What the findings do—and do not—establish
This is an unusually detailed view of one small sample, not evidence that every human brain has the same wiring patterns. The tissue came from a person with epilepsy. Google says light-microscope inspection found no substantial indication of pathology, but that observation cannot rule out a relationship between unusual features and the person’s condition or medication. More samples are needed to learn whether the reported patterns are common across people.

It provides structural detail that researchers can investigate; it does not by itself establish what a connection or shape does. As co-first author Daniel Berger told Harvard, it “establishes some ground rules for the human brain,” with the caveat that it comes from an epilepsy patient and more samples are needed.

Can you explore the brain map?
Yes. The H01 release page links to online exploration through Neuroglancer and describes tools such as CAVE for working with annotations and proofreading. It also provides public dataset exploration and programmatic-access resources. The scale and specialized format make it a research resource rather than a simple, complete map that can be downloaded and viewed as a conventional image.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Why the dataset matters despite its small size
Electron microscopy at nanoscale resolution makes individual synapses visible, but reconstructing even a tiny amount of brain tissue produces enormous volumes of image data and labor-intensive annotation. The project shows both the power and the challenge of connectomics: a small sample can expose connectivity in extraordinary detail, while answering broader questions requires more tissue, comparison across people and careful biological interpretation.
