If you want a prompt-driven tool to make a runnable web or Android app, Google AI Studio’s Build mode is the more relevant alternative to Claude Design. If your goal is a polished slide deck or one-page presentation, the original article’s author preferred Claude Design. That is an author’s assessment, not a measured head-to-head result; Google’s documentation describes AI Studio’s app-building features, not how it compares with Claude Design.
What Google AI Studio Build actually does
Google AI Studio is a Google tool, and Build is its prompt-driven environment for creating applications. You can start with a natural-language description, adapt an App Gallery example, or import code from GitHub. Build lets you choose a web or Android project, so it is better understood as an app-creation environment than as a general-purpose visual-design app. Google’s Build mode documentation describes the available workflow and project capabilities.
Choose based on what you need to make
| Need | Google AI Studio Build | Claude Design |
|---|---|---|
| A runnable web or Android app | Designed to generate applications; web and Android projects have different architectures and limits. | The cited article does not establish this as its main strength. |
| A polished slide deck or one-page presentation | The documentation cited here focuses on building applications, not presentations. | The original article’s author characterized Claude Design as stronger for this kind of deliverable; this is an attributed opinion, not a verified ranking. |
| Independent feature, pricing, or plan comparison | Google documents its own features, usage, and deployment terms. | Current feature inventory, pricing, and plan terms are not established by the sources cited here. |
Use that distinction as a starting point, not a universal winner-takes-all verdict. A prototype that needs to run as an app is a different job from a presentation that needs visual polish.

Web and Android projects are not interchangeable
Web apps
Google documents a React frontend by default and a Node.js server runtime for web projects. Generated work can show a live preview alongside code; you can iterate through chat or annotation mode. The agent can install packages and support server-side code. Google also documents setup for Firebase Firestore and Authentication, as well as Workspace API integrations. See the web app guidance for the current scope.

Android apps
Android projects use Kotlin and Jetpack Compose, and are client-side only. Google documents browser-emulator preview, installation on a physical device, and Play Store internal testing. The project constraints matter: Android output is limited to one activity and one module, uses Compose only, does not support NDK/native code, and does not target Wear OS or Android TV. Those limits make Build useful for certain app prototypes, but not a substitute for every Android development workflow. Google’s Android documentation lists the supported workflow and constraints.
Export and portability depend on the platform
| Project type | Documented export options |
|---|---|
| Web | Two-way GitHub sync or ZIP download. |
| Android | ZIP download; GitHub export is not available according to Google’s current Android documentation. |
For web projects, Google also documents sharing and deployment options. App API calls count against usage limits, and use of paid models may incur costs. Check the Build documentation for the current export and sharing details.

“Free” has separate model and deployment limits
There are two different costs to think about: using models while building, and deploying an app. Google says new accounts begin on the Gemini API Free Tier, which provides access to certain models within free-tier limits. Higher limits are available on paid tiers; model availability and usage terms can change. Review Google’s billing documentation before relying on a particular model or allowance.
For deployment, Google documents a Cloud Starter Tier that allows eligible accounts to deploy up to two full-stack services without setting up billing. Eligibility exclusions include accounts with active or prior paid Google Cloud billing and some Google Workspace accounts. Standard deployment requires a linked Cloud project with billing enabled, and Cloud Run usage may cost money. The two-service allowance is therefore not a promise that every user can publish two apps for free. See the deployment guidance for eligibility and current terms.

Consider data terms before entering sensitive material
Google’s billing page distinguishes data handling by tier: it says free-tier prompts and responses may be used to improve Google products, while paid-tier prompts and responses are not used for that purpose, subject to the applicable terms. Do not treat the free tier as suitable for confidential or sensitive material simply because it has no charge. Read Google’s current billing and data-use terms and follow your organization’s rules before submitting information.

How to decide
- Choose AI Studio Build when you want to prompt your way toward a runnable web or supported Android app and value access to code and documented export options.
- Consider Claude Design when the deliverable is a polished presentation or one-page design and you are relying on the original article author’s stated preference; the sources cited here do not support a broader product ranking.
- Check project constraints first if you need Android native code, a multi-module structure, or a wearable/TV app, or if your web project needs deployment beyond the eligible Starter Tier.
- Check current terms before starting if you need predictable model limits, deployment costs, or particular privacy guarantees.
