Neither Google Ads AI localization nor manual translation is proven to outperform the other across international campaigns. Google’s campaign localization beta can speed up setup by translating campaign assets and targeting into a separate campaign, with editable translations and a review stage. Manual translation offers a human-led route, but it still requires appropriate targeting, campaign settings, and a localized landing page. For a consequential launch, test the beta against a manually localized campaign where feasible, and judge the result using your own conversion and business metrics.
What Google Ads AI localization does
Google’s AI campaign localization tool is a beta workflow for creating a new, independent localized Search campaign—not simply a control that translates ad copy inside the existing campaign. It can translate campaign assets and targeting while leaving the source campaign unchanged. See Google’s campaign localization beta documentation for current availability and instructions.
The documented workflow starts with an English (US) source campaign and supports these target languages: Dutch, French, French (Canada), German, Italian, Polish, Portuguese (Brazil), Portuguese (Portugal/European), Spanish (Castilian/Spain), and Spanish (Latin American and Caribbean). Google says it plans to expand target languages by the end of 2026 and begin Performance Max support in September 2026. These are beta details that may change; check the live help page and your account before planning a launch.

What the workflow translates and copies
The setup lets an advertiser choose a campaign name, target language, location, and budget, and enter global instructions such as preserving a brand name or using a formal tone. It can translate headlines, descriptions, sitelinks, callouts, and keywords. If images contain text overlays, the tool removes the overlay text and adds translated messaging as supplemental text assets.
Budgets and bids are copied exactly; the tool does not convert currencies or calculate exchange rates. Review the copied budget amount if the localized campaign uses a different currency or market.
How translation review works
Before publishing, the tool displays original text, translated text, an English back-translation, and translation notes. You can edit translated assets. The default is to publish the campaign paused, allowing a final review before it runs. These features support review; they do not certify linguistic accuracy or guarantee that the translation fits the market.
AI localization does not automatically solve landing-page localization
The beta offers two ways to handle landing pages: use Google’s supplied JavaScript snippet for dynamic translation, or change destination URLs, including through bulk find-and-replace. This is an option to assess against the site itself, not proof that a translated page meets every legal, technical, brand, or conversion requirement.

- Ultra-Long Playtime & Fast Charging: Enjoy up to 10 hours of playtime on a single charge (50 hours with the case). Even with ANC on, get 8 hours per charge and 40 hours total. A quick 10-minute charge gives 3.5 hours of listening.
Before directing traffic to a localized campaign, check that the destination page supports the language and offer shown in the ad and that the full customer journey works for the intended market. Translating ad assets alone does not establish that a landing page is ready.
Language targeting and translation are separate decisions
Translating an ad does not determine who is eligible to see it. Google Ads treats location and language as separate campaign settings. Google describes language targeting as a way to reach customers who speak selected languages, and notes that multilingual users may see ads in a language they understand even when they search in another language. Review Google’s location and language targeting guidance when setting up the campaign.
Choose the target location and language for the audience you intend to reach; do not assume that selecting a language translates the campaign or localizes its destination page.
Do not confuse campaign localization with AI Max text customization
Google Ads has a separate AI feature called text customization, formerly automatically created assets. It is a Search campaign setting available through AI Max that generates additional headlines and descriptions alongside advertiser-provided responsive search ad assets. Google says it uses campaign context such as the domain, landing page, existing ads, and ad-group keywords. Advertisers can preview example assets, apply text guidelines, and switch the setting on or off. Details are in Google’s text customization documentation.

Google says campaigns using text customization will be upgraded to AI Max starting in September 2026. AI Max also documents text customization and Final URL expansion as asset-optimization settings (How AI Max for Search campaigns works). Text-customization assets can be reviewed in asset reports and identified by “Google AI” in the Added by column (Google’s text customization reporting guidance). These controls and reports help with asset review; they do not establish that campaign localization is accurate or more effective than manual translation.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Which approach should you choose?
Choose based on the campaign’s needs and the review capacity available. AI localization gives you an editable starting point inside a campaign-building workflow. Manual translation keeps the work human-led. Neither choice removes the need to check targeting, campaign settings, destination pages, and market-specific requirements.
- Consider the beta when your campaign fits its documented eligibility and language support, and an editable translated draft could help your team build a localized campaign.
- Use human-led translation or transcreation where idiom, cultural context, brand voice, high-stakes claims, or close alignment with the landing page call for in-market judgment.
- Plan a review either way. The beta’s back-translation and notes can help a reviewer assess assets, but they are not a substitute for checking meaning and market fit.
How to compare the approaches fairly
Google’s product documentation describes features and controls; it does not provide a controlled comparison showing that AI-generated localization or professional manual translation delivers better campaign performance. Any decision about performance has to come from the advertiser’s own evaluation.
Recommended Free Tools
If both workflows are practical in the same market, compare them under a planned test. Keep the target location, audience, offer, landing-page readiness, bidding objective, and measurement definitions as comparable as possible. Evaluate:
- Campaign setup time and human review time.
- Accuracy of meaning, product details, brand voice, and local usage.
- Whether the destination page and customer journey are genuinely localized.
- Policy and regulatory readiness for the market and creative format.
- Conversions and downstream business outcomes using your own attribution method.
Treat those as evaluation criteria, not predicted results: Google’s help pages do not establish that either workflow raises conversion rates, lowers costs, or produces more natural copy.
