If you can’t sign in to a Google Account, start with Google’s official account recovery process. If you’re still signed in, check recent security activity and connected devices, reject anything you don’t recognize, and change your password from a trusted device. Then remove unfamiliar recovery methods, sign-in options, apps, and Gmail rules that could let someone back in.
Act first: recover access or secure the session you still have
- Use a trusted device. If you suspect malware or someone else has access to your computer or phone, use another device you trust to secure the account.
- If you’re locked out, go to Google Account recovery. Use Google’s recovery page if someone changed your password, recovery phone, or other account information. Answer its questions as accurately as you can. Google says incorrect guesses do not end the process and there is no limit to recovery attempts.
- If you can still sign in, inspect activity and devices. Open your Google Account’s Security settings and review recent security events and devices. If an event or device was not yours, mark it as unfamiliar and follow Google’s prompts. A location that looks unusual on its own does not prove a hack; check the event details and consider whether it could be your own sign-in.
- Change your Google password. Choose a strong password you have not used elsewhere. If you can’t sign in, set a new password when Google offers that option during recovery.
Recovery is a self-service process, not a guarantee that access will be restored or a promise of a particular completion time. Recovery options can vary by account, region, or device. If this is a work, school, or group-managed account, contact its administrator because some recovery steps may be different.
Recover access safely if someone changed your password
Use Google’s recovery flow rather than a link sent in an unexpected message or a service that claims it can restore your account. Enter the most accurate information you can when asked. Google says you can keep trying if an answer is wrong, so don’t treat one unsuccessful attempt as the end of the process.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsSome changes to recovery information or authentication factors may take up to seven days to take effect. That is a conditional security delay for those changes, not an estimate of how long account recovery will take overall. Google also says an at-risk sign-in method may be automatically removed if you do not verify it within 30 days of its warning. Review such alerts by navigating directly to your Google Account security settings.

Google says users cannot call it for help signing in, and it does not work with services that claim to provide account or password support. Do not pay a third party to recover an account, and never share a password or verification code. Google also says it never asks for your password by email, message, or phone call. If you receive a “suspicious sign-in prevented” warning, don’t follow an unfamiliar link; open your account security settings directly and check the activity there. See Google’s guidance on suspicious sign-in prevented emails.
Check for unfamiliar access and changes
Once you can access the account, review Google’s Security Checkup and security settings. Examine each item rather than relying on a single alert: an intruder may change account details, add a sign-in method, or leave a rule or connected app behind.

- FAST & CONVENIENT LOGIN: Plug in your Security Key C NFC via USB-C and tap it, or tap it against your phone (NFC) to authenticate. No batteries, no internet connection, and no extra fees required.

- BUILT TO LAST: Made from tough, waterproof, and crush-resistant materials. Manufactured in Sweden and programmed in the USA with the highest security standards.
- Recent security events and devices: Look for sign-ins, password changes, or devices you do not recognize. Google explains how to respond to an unfamiliar activity notification.
- Recovery details: Verify the recovery phone number and email address, along with any alternate email addresses. Remove details you did not add.
- 2-Step Verification and sign-in methods: Inspect the methods listed for verification and sign-in. Remove unfamiliar methods and follow the prompts for any method marked at risk.
- Connected apps and services: Remove apps you do not recognize or no longer need, especially those with access to account data.
- Gmail settings: Check forwarding, filters, delegation, scheduled messages, and POP or IMAP access. Remove unfamiliar rules, delegates, or access settings; a hidden forwarding rule can keep exposing new mail even after a password change.
- Other Google products: Review relevant activity in Drive, Photos, YouTube, and other services. Look for unfamiliar file activity, sharing, or shared albums.
Google lists unfamiliar security-setting changes, devices, sent mail, Gmail rules, Drive activity, and shared albums among signs that an account may be compromised. If you find any, address the setting or activity in the affected service as well as securing the main account.

Changing your Google password does not change passwords on other services. Update credentials anywhere you reused the old password, anywhere you use your Google address to sign in, and anywhere saved passwords might have been exposed. Review saved credentials and change any that are vulnerable.

If financial or identity information may have been exposed, contact the relevant bank or local authorities. For unauthorized charges, report them to the service where the payment occurred. Google’s compromised-account guidance also covers these downstream risks: Secure a hacked or compromised Google Account.
If you suspect harmful software on a device, Google recommends using trusted antivirus software. Also remove suspicious apps or browser extensions and keep the device’s software up to date before using it to manage sensitive accounts.

Make the recovered account harder to compromise again
- Use a unique password for every account. A password manager can help generate and keep track of unique passwords; a paid service is not required to follow this practice.
- Turn on 2-Step Verification. It adds a second sign-in check beyond your password. Review Google’s current options and choose methods you can use and recover if a device is lost.
- Consider a passkey or physical security key. These are optional sign-in protections, not account-recovery tools. Google identifies security keys as its most secure verification step for 2-Step Verification. Check compatibility with your devices and keep a recovery route available before relying on any one method.
- Keep software current and limit access. Install updates and remove apps or browser extensions you do not need. Revisit account security settings when you add or replace a phone, recovery address, or verification method.
Google’s guidance on making an account more secure covers 2-Step Verification, passkeys, security keys, passwords, software updates, and apps.
