GoFundMe is generally the better fit for donation fundraising; Indiegogo is generally the better fit for projects offering backer perks. The deciding factors are your campaign type, whether your country can receive payouts, the fees in effect when you launch, and whether you can deliver any rewards you promise. Indiegogo had announced major changes for October 16, 2026, but as of October 7, 2026, those changes were still scheduled rather than confirmed as implemented.
Which platform fits your campaign?
Start with what supporters are being asked to do. A donation campaign seeks contributions without making a product or perk the central exchange. A project campaign with perks asks backers to support a creator’s project in return for a promised reward.
| Campaign situation | Platform to investigate first | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| Raising donations for an individual or business | GoFundMe | Country-specific fees, organizer eligibility, withdrawal requirements, and the checkout experience for optional donor contributions. |
| Raising money for a nonprofit | GoFundMe, if the nonprofit and country qualify | Certified nonprofit availability, applicable pricing, and how funds will be routed. |
| Funding a creative or product project with backer perks | Indiegogo | Current campaign terms, funding model, fees, country eligibility, and the creator’s plan to produce and deliver rewards. |
| Launching from outside a platform’s clearly listed markets | Neither until eligibility is confirmed | Whether the organizer can complete payment onboarding and receive withdrawals in their country under the terms effective on launch day. |
These are practical fit distinctions, not guarantees of fundraising success. The official materials reviewed do not establish that either platform has a higher success rate or typical campaign total.
How do the fees compare?
Compare the fee charged on each contribution or pledge, not just the platform percentage. Processing charges, transaction charges, currency conversion, country, and fundraiser type can affect what the organizer ultimately receives.
#1 Best Overall
GoFundMe fees
GoFundMe lists no fundraiser start or management fee. For individual and business fundraisers in the United States, its pricing page displays a transaction fee of 2.9% + $0.30 per donation. The rate is country-specific; international transactions and currency conversion may add fees. GoFundMe’s fee help page illustrates the US rate with a $50 donation that nets $48.25 after the stated transaction fee. See GoFundMe’s pricing page and its fee explanation.
Donors may also be offered an optional contribution to GoFundMe. That optional donor contribution is not a fee deducted from the organizer’s donation proceeds. GoFundMe says recurring donations incur a 5% fee per donation; check the current terms and checkout details for the specific fundraiser.

Indiegogo fees and the scheduled change
Indiegogo’s legacy Help Center description, accessed October 7, 2026, lists a 5% platform fee plus payment-processing fees of 3–5%. Separately, its upgrade FAQ, last updated October 7, 2025, announced that from October 16, 2026, the structure would be a 5% platform fee plus payment processing of 3% plus 0.2 per transaction. The FAQ does not state the currency for “0.2,” so that announcement is not enough to calculate a reliable post-transition total. Check the operative fee page before launching or estimating proceeds.

Indiegogo’s legacy description and announced upgrade terms should not be blended into one current rate: as of October 7, 2026, the scheduled transition date had not yet arrived. The announcement is in the Indiegogo acquisition and platform-upgrade FAQ; the legacy fee description is in Indiegogo’s fee help page.

What happens if a campaign misses its goal?
GoFundMe’s materials describe donation fundraising and country-specific withdrawals; they do not establish an Indiegogo-style fixed-goal refund rule for GoFundMe. Do not assume the platforms treat an unmet target alike: read the terms and withdrawal rules shown for the specific fundraiser.
Indiegogo’s scheduled upgrade FAQ says flexible funding will end on October 16, 2026. It announced that existing flexible campaigns would automatically convert to fixed funding, with a campaign’s new goal set to the amount already raised. Under the announced terms, funds would be returned to backers if a campaign failed to reach its goal. Because the transition had not yet taken effect on the research date, confirm the actual funding rules for the campaign before pledging or launching.

Can you use either platform in your country?
GoFundMe organizer eligibility
A GoFundMe Help Center article updated June 24, 2026 says the platform can send funds in 20 countries, subject to country-specific withdrawal rules: Australia, Austria, Belgium, Canada, Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, Ireland, Italy, Luxembourg, Mexico, the Netherlands, Norway, Portugal, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, the United Kingdom, and the United States. The help article also lists exceptions for US territories. It says the fundraiser location cannot be changed after publishing, so check eligibility and choose the correct location before launch. Consult the current GoFundMe country and currency restrictions for territory exceptions and withdrawal requirements.
Certified nonprofit fundraisers are available only in the United States, Canada, the United Kingdom, Ireland, and Australia, according to GoFundMe’s help information. GoFundMe distinguishes personal fundraisers, which send funds to a personal or business/organization bank account, from nonprofit fundraisers, where funds are routed through PayPal Giving Fund or, for eligible US nonprofits with GoFundMe Pay enabled, directly to the nonprofit. Confirm the organization’s eligibility and routing before creating a campaign. See GoFundMe’s country and currency guidance and its nonprofit fundraising information.

Indiegogo eligibility around the upgrade
Indiegogo’s legacy Help Center says it has campaigns in over 200 countries and regions, but that statement is not a definitive eligibility list for campaigns launched after the announced upgrade. The upgrade FAQ says supported countries would change but does not provide the complete post-upgrade list. Before recommending or starting an Indiegogo campaign, verify the creator’s country against the current eligibility and payment-onboarding rules.

Indiegogo perks are creator-managed promises, not a guarantee that a retail product will arrive on a particular date. Before pledging, review the campaign’s delivery plan and refund terms. After successful funding, the announced upgrade FAQ says creators manage refunds through the platform or externally; creators remain responsible for reward fulfillment.
- For creators: account for production, shipping, and ongoing support when setting perk levels and campaign goals. The available official material does not quantify typical fulfillment costs or delivery success rates.
- For backers: assess the creator’s plan and the specific campaign terms rather than treating a pledge as an ordinary guaranteed retail purchase.
What is changing on Indiegogo, and when?
Indiegogo’s FAQ, last updated October 7, 2025, announced an upgrade for October 16, 2026. As of October 7, 2026, that date was still in the future. The announcement also describes payment and verification changes:
The Tool Desk
Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →- Existing live campaigns would continue using Stripe; new campaigns after the upgrade would use Adyen.
- New campaigns would follow an updated KYC (identity and business verification) process, which Indiegogo says may take up to one week for approval.
- Flexible funding would end, with the fixed-funding and missed-goal terms described above.
These are announced arrangements, not proof that the upgrade was implemented exactly as scheduled. Verify current payment, verification, funding, fee, and country terms when you are preparing a campaign.
Quick Recap
A practical way to decide
- Define the ask. For donations to a person, business, or eligible nonprofit, investigate GoFundMe first. For a project whose backers receive creator-managed perks, investigate Indiegogo first.
- Confirm organizer eligibility. Check whether your country, fundraiser type, and bank or payment details qualify. Do this before publishing; GoFundMe says the fundraiser location cannot be changed afterward.
- Calculate net proceeds using current terms. Use the applicable country and campaign-type fee, and account for payment processing and any currency conversion. For Indiegogo, confirm which side of the announced October 16, 2026 transition applies and verify the currency of the per-transaction amount.
- Check the funding rule. Know whether missing the target affects access to funds or triggers refunds before you set a goal or make a pledge.
- For perks, test the delivery plan. Make sure the campaign explains what is promised, when delivery is expected, and how refunds or delays will be handled.
