GoFundMe says it makes money through optional donor tips, while a transaction fee is deducted from donations to cover payment processing and secure delivery. Starting and managing an individual fundraiser is free, but that does not mean every dollar donated reaches the beneficiary. The fee depends on the country and fundraiser type, and recurring donations have a separate stated fee.
GoFundMe’s two main revenue-related charges
Optional donor tips
Donors making a single donation can choose an optional contribution to GoFundMe and can change the amount to zero. GoFundMe says tips support its fundraising tools, customer support, and Trust & Safety. In an explainer dated April 20, 2026, the company described optional tips as how it makes money: “We also accept optional tips from donors, which is how GoFundMe makes money.”
Transaction fees
A transaction fee is automatically deducted from a donation. GoFundMe says it covers payment processing—including credit, debit, and ACH charges—and secure delivery of funds. The company also says most fundraisers can use payment methods such as PayPal, Venmo, Apple Pay, and Google Pay. This fee is distinct from an optional tip: the donor may set the tip to zero, but the transaction fee still applies.

What “free to start” means for a fundraiser
GoFundMe says it does not charge a platform fee to start or manage a fundraiser. Its Help Center puts it this way: “It’s always free to start and manage a fundraiser on GoFundMe.” That describes the cost of opening and maintaining the page; it does not mean donations are transferred without deductions. Transaction fees are deducted from donations before the beneficiary receives the remaining amount.

Example: the US individual-fundraiser fee
For a US individual fundraiser, GoFundMe’s Help Center lists a transaction fee of 2.9% plus $0.30 per donation. Its example shows what happens to a single $50 gift:
| Donation | Transaction fee | Amount received |
|---|---|---|
| $50.00 | $1.75 | $48.25 |
This is a US individual-fundraiser example, not a universal rate for every country or fundraiser. A donor’s optional tip is separate from the $1.75 transaction fee in this example.
Recurring donations have a separate stated fee
GoFundMe’s Help Center, updated September 30, 2026, says donors who choose recurring donations pay a 5% fee per donation. This is a separate charge tied to recurring gifts; do not assume that the one-time US individual-fundraiser example above describes the full cost of a recurring donation.
Why GoFundMe fees vary
GoFundMe’s pricing page lists transaction rates by country and fundraiser type, distinguishing individual or business fundraisers from certified charity fundraisers. It also notes that international transaction and currency-conversion fees may apply, and that GoFundMe Pro has different pricing. Check the current rate for the specific country and fundraiser type rather than applying the US individual rate to all campaigns: GoFundMe pricing by country and fundraiser type.
Rank #3
For a meaningful cost comparison with another fundraising option, compare the same currency and geography, fundraiser category, and donation schedule. Include both the percentage and per-donation fixed fee, identify who pays each charge, and account for any optional tip or international conversion fee. GoFundMe Pro should be treated as a separate product when comparing pricing.

GoFundMe’s public materials explain its stated fee model, but they do not establish what share of the company’s total revenue comes from each source. The practical takeaway for a fundraiser organizer is narrower: the platform says there is no fee to start or manage a fundraiser, while transaction fees are deducted from gifts and optional tips are a separate way donors can support the service.
