GoDaddy does not publish a recommended pixel width and height for a Websites + Marketing header (cover) image in the help pages reviewed. Instead of forcing an unrelated banner number into your design, choose a high-quality, business-relevant photo, upload it through Header > Cover Media > Change image, then use GoDaddy’s crop and position controls and preview the result before publishing.
What size should a GoDaddy website header image be?
There is no documented GoDaddy header-specific dimension such as “1,920 × 600 pixels” in the reviewed Websites + Marketing guidance. The documentation explains how to select, crop, position and publish cover media, but it does not prescribe a fixed width-to-height ratio.
That means a practical answer is more useful than a made-up number: start with a sharp, wide-oriented source image that contains the important subject near the center, upload it, and adjust the visible crop in the editor. Check the available previews at desktop and narrow widths. Treat the preview as the final authority for your theme, because the site is responsive and the same source image can show a different portion at different viewport sizes.
How to replace the header image in GoDaddy
- Open the website editor. Select the home-page Header.
- Open Cover Media. Choose Change image.
- Select a source. Upload your own photo or choose GoDaddy royalty-free stock imagery. Depending on the theme, Cover Media may also offer video or a slideshow.
- Adjust the crop. Reposition the image so the business, product or other essential subject remains visible. Do not judge the crop only on a wide monitor.
- Add an image description. Write concise alt text that explains the meaningful content rather than listing colors or camera details.
- Preview the page. Check every view the editor provides, including narrow/mobile layouts, and verify that navigation, text overlays and calls to action remain legible.
- Publish. Keep the editor preview open until you have confirmed the live page displays the intended crop.
File types, limits and speed
Supported formats
GoDaddy’s general photo guidance accepts PNG, JPEG/JPG and GIF files. Animated GIFs do not work as website photos, so export a still frame or use another supported format. A static PNG or JPEG is normally the simplest choice for a photographic header.
Maximum upload size
The documented maximum for a photo upload is 30 MB. That is an upper limit, not a recommended target. GoDaddy explicitly notes that smaller files load faster on your site, so resize or compress an oversized original while retaining enough detail for the largest layout you support.

Choosing between JPEG and PNG
- Use JPEG/JPG for most photographs; it usually produces a much smaller file than a lossless export.
- Use PNG when the image contains transparency, crisp interface artwork or text that suffers from JPEG compression.
- Use a non-animated GIF only when its limited color palette is appropriate; it does not turn into an animated header.
How to choose an image when no pixel recommendation exists
Make the subject explain the business
GoDaddy recommends a header image that represents what the business does. Its example is a Seattle plumber showing plumbing work or equipment instead of an unrelated scenic view. Apply the same test to any industry: a visitor should understand the business from the image and surrounding headline without guessing.
Protect the crop
- Keep faces, products, logos and tools away from the extreme edges, where a responsive crop can remove them.
- Leave relatively uncluttered space where the theme places headline or button text.
- Avoid photos whose meaning depends on tiny details; those details may disappear on a phone.
- Use a source large enough to remain sharp in the widest preview, but do not upload a 30 MB camera original when a smaller export looks identical.
Check text contrast
If your theme places white or dark text over the image, preview the exact combination. A busy background can make otherwise readable text fail. Select a different photo or use the theme’s available overlay treatment rather than baking essential wording into the photograph.

Using 590 × 175 or 180 × 180 for a full-width header would answer a different design question and can produce soft, awkward or heavily cropped results.
A repeatable header-image checklist
- The photo clearly relates to your business and audience.
- The main subject survives the editor’s crop at wide and narrow previews.
- Headline and button text remain legible over the chosen background.
- The file is PNG, JPEG/JPG or a static GIF, and is below the 30 MB upload limit.
- You compressed or resized the file when a smaller export looks equally sharp.
- The image description communicates the meaningful visual information for visitors using assistive technology.
- You previewed the page and published only after checking the live result.
Troubleshooting common header-image problems
The image looks zoomed in or cuts off the subject
Reopen Header > Cover Media and reposition the visible area. If the subject cannot fit at all, choose a wider composition with more surrounding space; changing an arbitrary pixel number will not override the theme’s crop behavior.
The upload is rejected
Confirm that the file is PNG, JPEG/JPG or a non-animated GIF and that it is no larger than 30 MB. Re-export an animated GIF as a still image. If the original is unusually large, create a smaller copy and try again.

The page loads slowly
Reduce file dimensions to the largest display you actually need and compress the image. GoDaddy’s guidance is explicit that smaller files load faster. Remove unnecessary metadata and avoid uploading multiple huge originals when one optimized cover image is sufficient.

The mobile preview hides important content
Move the focal subject toward the center and keep critical details away from the edges. Recheck any headline or button layered over the image. If the theme’s crop still cannot show the subject and text together, select a simpler image rather than relying on a desktop-only composition.
The header looks correct in the editor but not after publishing
Save and publish again, then load the public URL in a private window or a second device. Check that you are viewing the intended page and not an older cached tab. If the crop is still wrong, return to the editor and adjust the position rather than replacing the image with an unrelated dimension.
