What order should you fight them in?
You can fight the first eight in any order. Denny Yeh, Senior Staff Combat Designer at Santa Monica Studio, says the team had a rough progression based partly on location accessibility: earlier fights introduce mechanics that return in later encounters and against the queen. Treat that as a helpful learning path, not a mandatory sequence. The region list above reflects one walkthrough’s ordering, not a required progression. Yeh’s explanation of the Valkyrie encounters describes the intended progression and combat design.

How should you prepare?
Use readiness, not a supposed required level
There is no universal required level established here, and the developer does not prescribe a minimum level, armor set, or loadout. One creator’s walkthrough description recommends waiting until level 6–7, but that is a nonbinding recommendation—not an official threshold. Upgrade your equipment as you progress and choose an encounter based on how comfortable you are with the surrounding combat and its added pressures.
Learn one tell at a time
Santa Monica Studio describes the encounters as difficult but fair, built to test the game’s combat mechanics. Yeh summarizes the design intent this way: “Every single thing the Valkyrie can do has an answer.” That does not mean the fights are easy or that one response works against every move. Apply the idea by watching for a particular attack tell, then practicing the response before trying to maintain constant offense. If the same attack keeps catching you, pause your aggression and work out what signals it and how that move is meant to be answered.

How do you counter Valkyrie attacks?
Match your response to the move rather than relying on a single defensive habit. Yeh gives three concrete examples:
- Scythe attack: A well-timed parry can answer the scythe attack when its tell allows. Dodging is another option against Gunnr’s attacks.
- Airborne attack: When a Valkyrie goes airborne, throw the axe to interrupt the attack.
- Stomp attempt: Dodge repeatedly—Yeh describes dodging three times to avoid a stomp attempt.
These are examples of move-specific counterplay, not a universal recipe for every Valkyrie. Watch each encounter’s tells and adjust to the attack you are actually seeing.

Use Gunnr as an introduction
Yeh describes Gunnr as a comparatively simple introduction. Her damaging attacks use the scythe, and well-timed parries or dodges work against them. Focus on recognizing the scythe attack’s timing and responding cleanly rather than trying to overwhelm her with offense.
What makes Hildr different?
Hildr’s Niflheim setting adds pressure beyond the boss itself: poison mist imposes a time limit, and dying means repeating part of the route through the area. Santa Monica Studio says it kept her fight less complex with those constraints in mind. Plan for the arena and the route back as well as the moveset; a failed attempt costs more than just time spent in the fight.

How should you choose your next encounter?
When deciding where to go next, weigh three things: how accessible the encounter is, how much complexity you want to practice, and whether the arena adds pressure beyond the Valkyrie’s attacks. The studio’s rough progression accounts for accessibility and mechanics; Gunnr is presented as an introductory moveset, while Hildr’s mist and retry route make Niflheim a special case. Since the first eight fights can be tackled in any order, choose the encounter that best fits your current readiness rather than treating the checklist as a strict sequence.
