Gobe Productive was a real integrated office suite that began on BeOS and later appeared on Windows. Gobe Software was founded by developers associated with ClarisWorks; a historical account says it suspended operations in 2002. Linux availability and a proposed open-source release were still described as plans in 2002, not confirmed releases. Today, treat Gobe Productive as discontinued legacy software—not as a supported modern office suite.

What was Gobe Productive?

Gobe Productive brought several creative and office tools together in one application and document model. The Windows version was reviewed in 2002 as a compact alternative for people who did not need every feature of Microsoft Office; that is a period description, not a current comparison.

  • Word processing and page layout
  • Spreadsheets
  • Drawing and illustration
  • Photo editing
  • Presentations

The suite’s appeal was its integration: users could work with different kinds of content within a unified product rather than switching among separate applications.

Who made it, and what happened to the company?

A historical account says Gobe Software was founded in 1997 by developers associated with ClarisWorks, with the aim of creating a similar integrated suite for BeOS. It identifies Gobe Productive as the company’s main product and reports that Gobe suspended operations in 2002. This timeline comes from a secondary historical summary, not a current corporate-registry check. See the historical account of Gobe Software.

Which platforms did it support?

Platform or release What the period sources establish
BeOS An earlier edition existed and was reviewed as an integrated productivity package. Target PC’s BeOS review.
Windows Ars Technica reviewed Gobe Productive 3.0 for Windows in March 2002. Its listed requirements included Windows 98, ME, 2000, or XP and a Pentium MMX 200 MHz processor. These are period requirements, not evidence of compatibility with current Windows. Read the 2002 review.
Linux In March 2002, the Ars Technica review said a Linux port was planned for release that year but was not then commercially available. The source does not establish that a finished Linux version was released.

Did the Linux version or open-source release happen?

The available contemporary reporting supports plans, not a confirmed outcome. In August 2002, The Register reported that FreeRadicalSoftware expected to acquire Gobe Productive’s code base and release it under a dual license that included the GPL; the report also made clear the arrangement was not yet final. It should not be described as proof that the acquisition or a GPL release was completed. Read The Register’s August 2002 report.

How well did it handle Microsoft Office files?

Do not assume seamless Office compatibility. Reviews of the BeOS edition described problems converting complex Word documents and embedded images, as well as limitations involving some spreadsheet functions and charts. The Windows-era review also discussed file interchange concerns. These are historical reviews, not tests of every version or file type, but they are enough to make Gobe a poor choice when dependable modern document exchange matters. Target PC’s review and Ars Technica’s review provide the period context.

Is Gobe Productive still usable or available?

The sources establish the product’s historical existence, not current support, secure operation, modern compatibility, an active license, or present-day retail availability. A surviving CD or other original media may interest a vintage-computing collector, but its existence does not prove that it can be installed or run on a current computer.

If considering a vintage copy, confirm these details with the seller before buying:

Why was someone asking about the company in 2004?

An AnandTech forum thread titled “Anyone know anything about Gobe Productive software or Company?” was posted in 2004. Its opening question asked whether Gobe was still active and whether the promised Linux version would appear. The post captures the uncertainty users had at the time; a forum question by itself does not establish the company’s status or whether a Linux release followed. See the AnandTech discussion.
