Before a Go service accepts protected traffic, confirm that its required security configuration and credentials are present and usable—and keep the service unready if a required control is unavailable. That startup check is not authorization: authenticate and authorize each protected request independently, against the requested action and resource.
What startup checks do—and do not—prove
Startup checks establish whether the service can operate with its required security dependencies. Depending on the application, that can mean retrieving credentials through the deployment’s approved mechanism, confirming required values can be parsed, and checking that the service has the expected identity or scope. Connectivity checks may also be appropriate when the service cannot safely handle requests without a dependency.
These checks are design choices, not a Go-specific sequence prescribed by the cited guidance. Check what the service actually requires rather than making optional integrations a condition of startup. If a required security configuration cannot be obtained, fail startup or keep the service unready; do not switch to an empty credential, a broader identity, or permissive access. OWASP advises denying access when an application cannot access security configuration in its Secrets Management Cheat Sheet.
Readiness and liveness answer different operational questions. A service can be alive but not ready to receive traffic because a required dependency is unavailable. The exact probes and behavior depend on the deployment platform; Go itself does not define a universal readiness mechanism.

- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Use a least-privilege identity to retrieve credentials
Give the service identity only the access it needs for its function, and limit which people and systems can read or change secrets. A single broad credential can increase blast radius if it is exposed. Prefer scoped identities and permissions tied to the service’s actual resources and environment.
For AWS deployments, AWS Secrets Manager guidance recommends least-privileged IAM policies for access to secrets. That is provider-specific advice, not a requirement that every Go service use AWS. OWASP likewise recommends applying least privilege to access within a secrets-management system. See the AWS Secrets Manager best practices and OWASP’s secrets-management guidance.

Choose how credentials reach the service
The deployment platform and threat model determine whether a managed secret store, workload identity, short-lived credentials, or protected environment/file delivery is the best fit. Compare the choices on exposure duration, access scope, availability dependency, auditability, rotation support, accidental disclosure risk, and operational effort.
| Approach | Potential advantages | Trade-offs to assess |
|---|---|---|
| Managed secret store | Can centralize access controls, audit activity, and lifecycle handling. | Retrieval depends on the store and its availability; access policies and service identity still need careful scoping. |
| Workload identity or short-lived credentials | Can reduce the need to distribute a long-lived secret and limit how long credentials remain usable. | Depends on platform support and correct identity configuration; operational complexity varies. |
| Protected environment or file delivery | May fit deployment systems that securely inject configuration or mount protected files. | Assess who can read or change the delivery path, audit coverage, rotation process, and possible exposure through shells, diagnostics, or logs. |
Environment variables are not inherently safe or unsafe in every deployment. Their exposure depends on how the platform, process, operators, and diagnostic tools handle them. Whatever the mechanism, do not commit credentials to source code or print secret values while diagnosing retrieval failures. OWASP encourages managed lifecycle practices and dynamic secrets where practical; its CI/CD Security Cheat Sheet also addresses protecting secrets in delivery pipelines.

Authorize every protected request
Authentication establishes who or what is making a request; authorization decides whether that principal may perform the requested operation on the particular resource. A successful startup check or an earlier human approval does not grant permanent permission to callers.
- Authenticate the caller, then evaluate the requested action against the specific resource and relevant tenant or environment.
- Run authorization checks at every protected entry point, including HTTP, RPC, scheduled jobs, and command-line operations. Do not rely on a UI check or a decision made for a prior request.
- Use narrow roles and permissions. Review grants when responsibilities change and remove access that is no longer needed.
OWASP recommends validating permissions on every request, regardless of where that request originates. Its Authorization Cheat Sheet provides the relevant guidance.

Make an access approval reviewable
An approval process should identify exactly what access is being requested, rather than approving an imprecise label such as “production access.” A practical review record can capture the requesting principal, reviewer, business reason, permissions and resources, environment, decision, timestamp, and—where appropriate—an expiration or review date and a link to the change or ticket. These are useful record-design recommendations, not a standardized schema mandated by the cited sources. Set the approver, review interval, and expiration policy according to your organization’s requirements.
Approval records support governance; they do not replace runtime authorization. The application or an enforcing platform still needs to check the current permission at the protected boundary.

Log access and credential lifecycle without logging secrets
Keep useful evidence of access decisions and credential handling, such as allow or deny decisions, failed credential retrieval, access changes, and rotation or revocation events where appropriate. Never place plaintext secrets, tokens, or private keys in logs. Restrict and monitor log access, since logs can themselves contain sensitive operational information. OWASP’s Logging Cheat Sheet covers security logging and sensitive data.
Plan rotation and revocation as lifecycle operations
Document which services and processes depend on each credential, how it is rotated or revoked, and how the service recovers if an update fails. The right rotation cadence depends on the secret type and platform; the cited guidance does not establish one universal interval. Where possible, use managed or automated lifecycle handling and make sure a revocation can take effect without leaving the service to fall back to broader access.
