context deadline exceeded means an operation did not finish before its context deadline; it does not identify screenshot capture as the failing operation. In a chromedp workflow, browser startup, navigation, a readiness wait or selector lookup, and the capture itself can all take time. Separate those stages and find the first one that returns the error before changing screenshot options.

Find which chromedp action timed out

Start by recording the environment and the exact action that fails. A screenshot workflow commonly has several distinct operations: launching or connecting to Chrome, navigating to a URL, waiting for the page or an element, and capturing pixels. If these run together, the final error may not make the failing stage obvious.

  • Record go version, the chromedp module version, and the Chrome or Chromium version.
  • Note the operating system and architecture, whether the program runs in a container or hosted environment, and whether Chrome is local or remote.
  • Record where the context and its deadline are created, and whether a parent request or job context can be canceled early.
  • Log each action name, target URL, elapsed time, and returned error.

Split the workflow into browser setup, navigation, readiness, and capture steps. Wrap each returned error with the stage name. The first action that reports the deadline is the point to investigate; an error observed after a combined sequence does not establish that the screenshot command caused it.

Example: label navigation and viewport capture separately

This minimal Go example uses a bounded context and reports whether navigation or viewport capture returned an error. Set the timeout to fit your application and environment; the example’s duration is not a chromedp requirement.

To isolate a readiness wait, add it as its own action between navigation and capture and log it independently. Use the condition your task needs—for example, waiting for a known element—rather than assuming that every page must reach a page-wide network-idle state. This example does not add a selector wait because a generic URL cannot establish which element indicates readiness.

Check what kind of screenshot you requested

Operation What it captures What to verify
CaptureScreenshot The current browser viewport. The page has reached the state you intend to capture.
Screenshot for a selector The first matching element node. The selector matches and the element is available and visible before the deadline.
FullScreenshot Content beyond the viewport. Whether a full-page capture is actually needed; a larger capture can involve more work and output.

An element screenshot has extra steps: chromedp queries for a matching node, obtains its geometry, then requests capture. A selector or readiness problem can therefore look like a screenshot problem if the stages are not separated. The package documentation describes CaptureScreenshot as capturing the current browser viewport and distinguishes it from element screenshots.

Fix the failing stage, not the last stage in the sequence

If browser startup or connection times out

  • Check whether the browser process starts and remains healthy.
  • For remote Chrome, verify the configured endpoint is reachable from the Go process.
  • For containers or hosted environments, compare the actual runtime details with a local reproduction. Do not assume a particular launch flag or container change is a universal fix.

If navigation times out

  • Check the target’s response and redirect behavior from the same environment where chromedp runs.
  • Inspect the navigation and readiness conditions separately. A page that continues background network activity may not satisfy a broad idle condition even when the content needed for the screenshot is ready.
  • If the workflow needs one known element, use a readiness condition tied to that element rather than waiting for unrelated page activity.

If an element screenshot times out or is missing

  • Confirm the selector is correct for the rendered page and matches the intended element.
  • Determine whether the element appears only after client-side rendering or other delayed page behavior, and wait for the relevant state within the context deadline.
  • Try viewport capture on the same page state. If that works while element capture does not, focus on selector lookup and element geometry rather than browser startup or navigation.

If capture itself is the first failing action

  • Compare viewport capture with element capture on the same known page state; they exercise different work.
  • Try a minimal local page to reduce page-specific variables, then compare with the target site and deployment environment.
  • Check whether you requested full-page capture when a viewport image would meet the requirement. Full-page capture can involve more content, but the available documentation does not establish it as a general cause of deadline errors.

If the context expires unexpectedly

Trace context ownership from the incoming request or job through browser setup and all actions. Ensure a parent context is not canceled before the screenshot finishes, and choose a deadline that accounts for startup and the page’s behavior. Do not copy a timeout value from an example or an old issue report as a general recommendation.

Use historical reports as clues, not diagnoses

Older chromedp issue reports describe different environments and versions, not a demonstrated current general defect. One report opened in 2021 described a 30-second deadline in a hosted environment with chromedp v0.7.4, Chrome 90, and Go 1.16; the reporter did not establish the failing stage. Other reports from 2020 and 2021 involved chromedp v0.5.3 with Chrome 80 and Go 1.13.8, or chromedp v0.5.1 with Chrome 89. They cannot determine the cause in a current installation.

When asking for help, include the version and deployment details, the context creation and cancellation path, the action-by-action logs, and a small reproducible example. Without those details—and especially without knowing the first failing action—the exact remediation cannot be determined.
