Gmail can now place a Gemini-generated overview at the top of a long email conversation. Open the thread and choose “Summarize this email” to see a concise synthesis of the conversation’s key points and replies, with an optional reminder when the thread contains a task and due date.

What Gmail’s AI Overview does

The feature is designed for catching up on lengthy threads without reading every message in sequence. Gmail’s overview appears at the top of the conversation and condenses the main points and responses into a shorter briefing. Google describes it as an AI Overview conversation summary.

When Gemini detects a task with a due date, the overview may also offer Remind me. That reminder can be managed through Google Tasks or Google Calendar. The reminder card stays visible for four days or until you dismiss it; this duration applies to the card, not to the email summary itself.

How to summarize a Gmail thread

On a computer

  1. Sign in to Gmail and open a long email conversation.
  2. At the top of the thread, select Summarize this email.
  3. Read the generated overview displayed above the conversation.
  4. If Gmail offers a due-date reminder, select Remind me and manage it later in Google Tasks or Google Calendar.

Google documents the same summary workflow in its computer instructions.

On Android

  1. Open the Gmail app and open the conversation.
  2. Tap Summarize this email at the top of the thread.
  3. Review the overview, and use Remind me if Gmail identifies a dated task.

See Google’s Android instructions for the mobile workflow. Google’s feature matrix also lists iOS support, although the cited step-by-step pages above cover computer and Android use.

Who can use it?

Access is not identical for every Gmail account. Google’s pages describe both eligible paid-plan access and broader personal Gmail availability, so the feature can depend on account type, plan, language, platform, and rollout status.

Access factor What Google currently states
Account Google’s desktop and Android instructions say work, school, and personal Google Accounts can use the feature globally when a supported language is available.
Plans Google’s feature matrix lists AI Overview conversation summaries for Google AI Plus, Pro, or Ultra subscribers and eligible Google Workspace plans.
Personal Gmail Google’s Workspace information page separately says personal-account users can use AI Overviews for email threads at no charge in the United States.
Languages Google lists English, French, German, Italian, Japanese, Korean, Portuguese, and Spanish.
Platforms Google’s matrix lists web, iOS, and Android support.

These are changeable product-availability details, and Google’s pages use different plan and account descriptions. If you do not see the control, check your account, language, platform, and the current Gmail Gemini feature matrix rather than assuming the feature is unavailable everywhere.

Required settings and the control trade-off

Google says both Smart features in Gmail, Chat, and Meet and Smart features in Google Workspace must be enabled. Turning off Smart features prevents AI Overview conversation summaries, but it also disables other AI-assisted writing and proofreading features across Gmail and related Workspace apps. Disabling summaries is therefore a broader privacy or preference choice, not an isolated switch.

Accuracy, privacy, and when to verify the original thread

Gemini-generated text is a convenience, not an authoritative record. Google warns that Gemini suggestions may be inaccurate or inappropriate and provides a Bad suggestion feedback control. Check the original messages before relying on a summary for commitments, deadlines, money, approvals, legal or compliance matters, or any other consequential detail.

Summary versus other Gemini tools in Gmail

The thread overview is only one Gemini capability. Google also documents a Gemini side-panel workflow for tasks such as drafting email, suggesting replies, finding information in earlier mail, and using Calendar or Drive context. Its examples include “Create a list of action items for me based on this email.” and “Explain this email to me like I’m 5 years old.” Those prompts are separate requests; the automatic overview is the card shown at the top of the opened conversation.

What the feature is—and is not

  • It is: a quick, in-thread synthesis of key points and replies in a long conversation.
  • It may include: a reminder suggestion when Gmail finds a task with a due date.
  • It is not: a guaranteed complete or error-free record of every message.
  • It does not prove: any measured time saving, accuracy rate, or productivity improvement; Google’s cited documentation provides no such statistic.
