A paperclip in Gmail does not always mean there is a separate file on the newest message. In a conversation, the file may be attached to an earlier, collapsed message; a Gmail Help Community expert also notes that an embedded image can account for the indicator. Open the message that carries the paperclip before assuming the attachment is missing.
First, check every message in the conversation
Gmail groups related messages into a conversation, but an attachment belongs to the specific message that included it. A reply can appear in the same thread without repeating the original message’s files. Gmail Help Community guidance recommends expanding the individual messages and checking the one marked with a paperclip.
- Open the conversation.
- Expand the individual messages, including earlier messages that are collapsed.
- Find the message whose header shows the paperclip, then look inside that message for its attachment.
This explanation comes from the Gmail Help Community, not an official Gmail product specification. Read the community discussion about attachments that do not appear to come through.
Could the paperclip indicate an image in the message?
If you have expanded the message and still do not see a separate downloadable file, look through the message body for an image. A Gmail Help Community Diamond Product Expert says an image embedded in the body can also account for the paperclip. That is community guidance rather than a guarantee about how every message or Gmail view will display it.

Is the inbox preview or paperclip display different?
Distinguish the indicator in an inbox row from the contents of an opened message. Gmail Help Community discussions report that inbox density, attachment previews, and Conversation View can affect what users see. The reports are user-specific and do not establish a universal display rule, so treat a changed icon or preview as a reason to open the message and inspect its contents—not proof that a file is gone.
If the icon or preview itself seems to be missing or behaving inconsistently, check Gmail’s display settings and compare the message in another view. Community discussions describe different outcomes, so changing Conversation View or density is not a guaranteed fix:

If an attachment will not open or download
A file that is visible but will not open or download is a different problem from a paperclip with no visible file. Google’s official guidance identifies browser and network conditions, file restrictions, and storage limits as possible causes.
- Browser or proxy: Try a supported browser or an alternate browser or proxy, as appropriate.
- Network blocking: Google says an administrator or internet provider may block
mail-attachment.googleusercontent.com, making attachments unavailable. If you are on a managed work or school network, ask its administrator whether access is restricted. - Blocked file type: Gmail blocks certain file types, including executable files such as
.exe. - Shared storage full: Google storage is shared across Gmail, Drive, and Photos. Google says that when you reach the storage limit, you cannot send or receive attachments. This is relevant if attachments cannot be received; it does not explain why an attachment in an existing message is hidden.
See Google’s Gmail Help for sending attachments for its attachment guidance.

Could Gmail have replaced a large attachment with a Drive link?
For personal Gmail accounts, Google states a 25 MB attachment limit. If the total attachment size is greater than the limit, Gmail removes the attachment and adds it as a Google Drive link in the email. A link is therefore what to look for in an oversized message, rather than a conventional attachment. Work and school account limits are set by the Workspace administrator, so check with yours if the account is managed.
