The documented Glide workflow uses DocsAutomator: build a Google Docs template with placeholders, configure a DocsAutomator automation whose data source is Glide, connect the service in Glide with its API key and account email, then run the automation from an action and map each placeholder to Glide values. The resulting document can be produced as a Google Doc or PDF, depending on the automation configuration.
The steps below follow Glide’s guest tutorial published March 18, 2024. Screen labels and prerequisites may have changed, so confirm the current labels in Glide and DocsAutomator before deploying a production workflow.
How the Glide-to-document workflow fits together
There are four moving parts:
- Your Glide row: the business data, such as customer, line items, totals and dates.
- A template: a Google Doc that defines the layout and contains placeholders for values.
- An automation: a DocsAutomator configuration that knows which template to use and which Glide data source to read.
- A Glide action: the button or action sequence that sends a selected row to the automation and receives the generated document.
Think of the template as the document’s structure and the mapping as its data-binding layer. A placeholder in the template is paired with a Glide value at run time. The tutorial also describes adding images and table data dynamically.
Prepare your Glide data and template
Choose one repeatable document
Start with a document you create often and whose fields already exist in Glide: an invoice, quote, inspection report, employee letter or client summary. Decide which Glide row will be the source record and which related records represent repeating line items.

Create the Google Docs template
- Create a Google Doc with the headings, logo, tables, signature area and legal text you want in every output.
- Insert clearly named placeholders where Glide values belong. Use a consistent naming convention, such as
{{customer_name}},{{invoice_number}}and{{total}}, following the placeholder syntax supported by your DocsAutomator template. - Leave enough room for long names, addresses and multi-line notes. A short sample value can hide wrapping problems that appear with real records.
- For line items, reserve a table or repeating section. For a logo or product image, reserve an image position and note the field that will supply its URL.
- Give the file a useful name and make sure the DocsAutomator account can access it.
The template is not the data source. It is the reusable layout that DocsAutomator fills after Glide invokes the automation.
Configure DocsAutomator
- In DocsAutomator, create a new automation.
- Select Glide as the data source.
- Select the Google Docs template you prepared.
- Save the automation and record its automation or template ID; the Glide action will need that identifier.
The Glide tutorial is written by Rupert Arnold Hoffschmidt-McDonnell, DocsAutomator’s founder, so treat product-specific descriptions as vendor-authored guidance rather than an independent performance evaluation.
Connect the integration in Glide
- Open your app’s Glide settings and add the DocsAutomator integration.
- Enter the DocsAutomator API key and the account email requested by the tutorial.
- Save the connection and verify that Glide accepts the credentials before building the action.
Keep the API key private. Do not place it in a visible text column, a user-facing component or client-side custom code. If a key is exposed, revoke it in DocsAutomator and create a replacement.
Build the action that generates a document
- Open the screen or component where a user should generate the file—for example, an invoice detail screen.
- Add a button or action sequence and choose the DocsAutomator action.
- Enter the automation ID saved earlier.
- Provide a document title. Build it from Glide values when useful, such as an invoice number and customer name.
- Map every template placeholder to the corresponding Glide value from the current row.
- Add image and table mappings where your template requires them.
- Save, publish and run the action against a test record.
Mapping is explicit: {{customer_name}} must receive the customer-name value, while a total placeholder must receive the calculated total. A mismatched column, empty relation or incorrectly formatted date can produce a technically successful document with missing or misleading content.

Map common Glide field types

Test the complete flow
- Create a dedicated test row with realistic but non-sensitive data.
- Run the Glide action and wait for the generated file or link.
- Open the output and compare every placeholder, total, image and table row with the source record.
- Test an empty optional field, a long value, a missing image and a record with no line items.
- Repeat the test after changing the template, mapping or calculated columns.
Do not treat a successful button click as proof that the document is correct. Validate the rendered file and the values it contains.

Choosing among Glide’s document integrations
Glide’s classic integrations directory lists several document and rendering services. The directory describes them at a high level, not as a complete, current feature comparison.

Glide’s newer integrations directory describes the newer GlideOS integration system broadly. Do not assume that description changes how a classic Glide app’s integration behaves. For PDFMonkey specifically, a July 3, 2025 Glide Community reply points readers to official documentation; the reply itself is not the product documentation.
Operational, security and cost considerations
Keep source data authoritative
Generate from the row the user is viewing, or pass a stable row identifier and resolve the record inside the workflow. Avoid letting users type totals or customer names into an unvalidated field immediately before generation.
Handle retries deliberately
A user may tap a button twice or retry after a slow response. Add a generated-status column, timestamp or output URL so the app can distinguish a new document from a duplicate request. If your integration supports idempotency, use the row ID and document purpose as the idempotency key.
Protect personal and financial information
Review which fields leave Glide, who can access generated files and how long the integration retains templates, inputs and outputs. Restrict the Glide action to appropriate roles and avoid exposing generated links in public components.

Estimate usage before choosing a service
The cited Glide pages do not establish current DocsAutomator, PDFMonkey, Templated or Urlbox limits or prices. Measure your expected documents per month, template count, average page count and peak generation rate, then confirm those figures in the provider’s current documentation and plan terms.
Troubleshooting
The action is missing from Glide
Confirm that the DocsAutomator integration was added in the app settings and that you are editing the correct app and environment. Reconnect the integration if credentials were changed, then reload the editor.
Authentication fails
Re-enter the DocsAutomator API key and account email exactly as issued. Check for copied whitespace, a revoked key or an account mismatch. Rotate the key if it has appeared in a log or visible column.
The document is created but placeholders are blank
Compare placeholder spelling and capitalization with the mapping names. Verify that the action is using the intended row, that the source columns are non-empty and that calculated or relation columns have finished evaluating.
Images do not appear
Check that the mapped value is an image URL accepted by the integration, that it remains reachable during generation and that the template has an image placeholder rather than ordinary text. Test a known-good image before debugging Glide formulas.

Table rows are missing or malformed
Test the relation with zero, one and multiple related records. Confirm that the data is mapped as table data in the action, not as a comma-separated text string, and inspect the integration’s current table requirements.
The file has the wrong date or currency format
Use a display-ready Glide column or an explicit formatting column. Check the app’s locale, the user’s timezone and any formatting applied by the document service.
A generated link cannot be opened
Check the output URL’s permissions and expiration, whether the file is stored in a private location and whether the viewer is signed in. Store the returned link in a protected Glide column and test it as the intended user role.
