GitHub’s July 18, 2023 alert described a low-volume social-engineering campaign aimed at personal accounts belonging to technology-firm employees. The attackers posed as developers or recruiters, built trust across social platforms, then tried to persuade targets to clone and run code from GitHub repositories containing malicious npm dependencies. GitHub said neither GitHub nor npm systems were compromised.

What GitHub reported in July 2023

GitHub said it had identified a campaign targeting employees’ personal accounts, rather than reporting a breach of GitHub’s own services. Many identified targets had ties to blockchain, cryptocurrency, or online gambling; some worked in cybersecurity. GitHub characterized the activity as low-volume but did not publish a numeric incident count in its alert.

GitHub assessed with high confidence that the campaign was associated with a group operating in support of North Korean objectives. It said Microsoft Threat Intelligence calls the actor Jade Sleet and the U.S. Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency (CISA) calls it TraderTraitor. This is GitHub’s attribution assessment, not a publicly established identity of individual operators. Read GitHub’s July 18, 2023 security alert.

How the reported attack chain worked

  1. Impersonation: The actor used fabricated developer or recruiter personas on GitHub and other platforms, including LinkedIn, Slack, or Telegram. GitHub said the campaign could also involve compromised legitimate accounts.
  2. Relationship-building: The actor could initiate contact on one service and continue it elsewhere, gradually establishing rapport before making a technical request.
  3. Repository invitation: The target was invited to collaborate on a public or private GitHub repository and encouraged to clone and execute its contents. GitHub said the repository contained software with malicious npm dependencies, sometimes presented as media-player or cryptocurrency-trading tools.
  4. Malware execution: The malicious packages acted as first-stage malware, downloading and running a second-stage payload. In some cases, GitHub said, victims received malicious software directly through messaging or file-sharing services, bypassing the repository step.

GitHub said publishing packages when extending a fraudulent repository invitation helped limit exposure to scrutiny. That describes the attackers’ tactic; a GitHub repository or npm package is not inherently malicious. The warning concerned deceptive requests and specific malicious content.

What the 2023 warning did—and did not—establish

GitHub’s statement was explicit: “No GitHub or npm systems were compromised in this campaign.” The reported route was social engineering directed at employees’ personal accounts, followed by attempts to get people to run attacker-supplied code. The alert did not establish a numeric victim total or describe a compromise of GitHub’s or npm’s infrastructure.

How later fake-interview reporting relates

Later advisories describe similar broad themes—fake recruitment and malicious coding exercises—but identify the activity as WaterPlum or Contagious Interview. They are separate reporting and should not be treated as an expansion of the 2023 GitHub incident.

WaterPlum figures in a 2026 joint advisory

The Australian Cyber Security Centre’s 2026-hosted joint advisory attributes the following figures to WaterPlum: at least 30,000 devices infected in more than 100 countries; funds or credentials from over 7,000 cryptocurrency wallets; and 1.7 billion JPY, equivalent to 10.71 million USD, in cryptocurrency assets transferred to the DPRK. These are figures for WaterPlum as reported in that 2026 advisory, not impact measurements for GitHub’s 2023 campaign. The advisory describes recruitment through social, job, gig-work, and freelance platforms, followed by interviews or assignments that ask candidates to download and run malicious files hosted on developer platforms and code repositories. Read the Australian Cyber Security Centre’s joint-advisory summary.

Atlassian’s 2026 reporting

In a September 21, 2026 update, Atlassian said fraudulent Contagious Interview coding assessments could be hosted in public Bitbucket, GitHub, or GitLab repositories, with malicious payloads hidden in otherwise plausible code. Atlassian reported taking down hundreds of Contagious Interview repositories and associated accounts on its platforms. It also said some victims unknowingly uploaded copies of malicious repositories, unintentionally helping distribute them. This is Atlassian’s account of later Contagious Interview activity, not a statement about the scope of GitHub’s 2023 warning. Read Atlassian’s September 21, 2026 update.

How developers can reduce the risk

  • Verify the person independently. Confirm an unsolicited recruiter or interviewer through a known contact method you obtain separately, rather than relying only on the account or link that initiated the conversation.
  • Pause before running code. Treat requests to clone and execute an unfamiliar repository, install packages, or run downloaded conferencing or troubleshooting software as a security decision—even when the exercise appears plausible.
  • Ask for a safer assessment format. A coding task should not require running opaque code or installing unexplained dependencies on a personal or work device. Ask the organization to explain the environment and provide an isolated, approved way to complete it.
  • If you already ran it, notify your organization’s security team promptly. Follow its incident-response process rather than attempting a one-size-fits-all cleanup. The FBI recommends evaluating activity on the suspected employee’s network and device and reporting suspected North Korean IT-worker activity to the FBI or IC3. What employers and security teams should do

The FBI’s guidance combines identity checks with limits on access and monitoring. For hiring, verify identity during interviews and onboarding, cross-check duplicate applicant information, educate hiring teams, and audit staffing firms. Its 2025 business guidance also recommends checking identity documents and contact details, verifying education and work history directly, using in-person checks where possible, scrutinizing payment-change requests, and controlling system access until checks are complete. Consult FBI cyber alerts and business guidance.

For technical controls, the FBI recommends least privilege, limiting installation of remote desktop software, monitoring unusual network activity and code movement to private repositories or cloud accounts, and investigating suspicious browser sessions. These measures reduce exposure and improve detection; they do not prove that a particular applicant or repository is malicious. FBI recommendations on least privilege, monitoring, and reporting.
