Two artifacts can differ by much more than the source change shown in a pull request. In a September 30, 2026 post, ROSH Company Labs described testing two AG-UI artifacts for a stream-completion fix and finding package versions 0.0.58 and 1.0.1—a major-version jump, despite comparing commits only 21 days apart. The case illustrates a basic test-review question: can the “before” artifact actually fail in the scenario being tested?

What was the AG-UI bug?

AG-UI is an event-based protocol for connecting agents with user-facing applications, according to the project repository. Its issue #2300 describes a specific stream-handling problem: if a stream ended without a terminal RUN_FINISHED or RUN_ERROR event, the client could resolve it as success. That could make partial assistant content appear complete.

The issue documents the reported behavior and a reproduction. It establishes the defect being addressed; it does not independently confirm the artifact comparison or test outcomes later described by ROSH Company Labs.

Why the first passing test did not validate the fix

ROSH Company Labs first tried the published client. In the post’s account, that package did not contain the assertion added in the open pull request. Both test cases passed, but that result could not show that the new assertion worked: the tested client did not include it.

Elebase USB to USB C Adapter for iPhone 18 Pro Max,USBC Car Charger Adapter
  • Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
  • Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
  • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

A useful control is not merely an older-looking version or a build labelled “before.” It must contain the behavior under test in a state where the defect can still be triggered. As the author put it, “A before that cannot fail tells you nothing about an after that passes.”

What the two artifacts revealed

The author then tested artifacts associated with two pull-request commits. In the reported resend-during-teardown case, the older artifact failed and the newer one passed. But inspecting the installable artifacts showed a broader difference than the source change alone suggested.

These values and outcomes are ROSH Company Labs’ measurements and account of its test, not an independent reproduction. The post also reports a 21-day gap between the compared commits, with a major release in between. The project’s release history is dated and changes over time; the versions should be understood as details of this comparison, not as a statement about the latest release.

The important distinction is between a commit and a build artifact. A source diff tells you what changed in the compared commits. It does not, by itself, prove that two installable packages were produced from only those changes. Package metadata, dependencies, build output, or the workflow that selected the source can also differ. In this case, the article reports differences in dependencies and bundled output alongside the version and file-size changes.

How to check whether a before-and-after test is meaningful

  1. Make the control fail under the target condition. Reproduce the defect with the pre-fix behavior. If the supposed “before” passes, establish why before interpreting the “after.”
  2. Confirm both sides contain the intended test mechanism. Check that the relevant assertion or code path is actually present in each artifact. A published package that predates an open pull-request assertion is not a valid control for that assertion.
  3. Inspect the installed artifacts, not just commit labels. Compare package versions, dependency trees, and built output with the source state you intended to test. Do not assume a CI artifact is a clean snapshot of the commit named beside it.
  4. Explain the result independently of expectation. Ask whether the output arrived as expected and whether the test exercised the failure mode. A result that matches the prediction can still come from an invalid setup.

These checks are especially useful when a test relies on packages built by CI or downloaded from a pull request. The artifact is what the test executes; the commit comparison is only one clue about how that artifact came to be.
