For a beginner’s small, static website, GitHub Pages is a sensible starting point if your files already live in GitHub and you only need straightforward publishing. Choose Netlify if deploy previews or built-in features such as forms matter; choose Vercel if your project uses Next.js or benefits from its framework integrations. None is a universal winner: the right fit depends on how you build, publish, and use the site.

How the three hosting platforms differ

GitHub Pages: publish from a repository

GitHub Pages hosts static websites from files in a GitHub repository. GitHub describes it as a service that takes HTML, CSS, and JavaScript from a repository, optionally runs a build process, and publishes a website. You can publish from a branch or configure a GitHub Actions workflow. GitHub Pages supports user or organization sites and project sites; a project site normally appears under a path based on its repository name. GitHub’s Pages overview and publishing-source documentation explain the options.

This repository-centered approach suits a portfolio, class project, documentation page, or other simple static site when you already use GitHub. You can use the GitHub-hosted address or configure a custom domain.

Netlify: repository deployments with previews and site features

Netlify connects to a code repository and automates builds and deployments. Its workflow includes deploy previews, and its platform offers features that can be useful for a static site, including forms. Those features may reduce setup work, but check the documentation for the particular capability you need rather than assuming every project uses it without configuration.

  • Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
  • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

Vercel: framework-oriented deployment

Vercel also automates deployments from code repositories and provides previews. Its platform is especially closely integrated with Next.js and supports a broader set of function runtimes, making it a candidate when a site needs framework-specific deployment behavior or server-side features. Static hosting alone does not mean a site has backend functionality: confirm that your framework and required runtime are supported.

Vercel’s published comparison with Netlify is written by Vercel. Treat its comparative descriptions as the provider’s perspective, and verify a specific feature in the relevant platform’s own documentation before depending on it. Vercel’s comparison guide is a starting point, not an independent usability test.

Which one should a beginner choose?

Choose Good fit when What to keep in mind
GitHub Pages Your project is a simple static site and its files are already in GitHub; a portfolio, class project, or documentation site is a typical fit. Publishing is repository-centered. GitHub’s documentation focuses on branch or workflow publishing rather than hosted preview deployments.
Netlify You want deploy previews, or features such as forms may simplify the site you are building. Its Free tier uses monthly credits, so check how your expected usage draws down the allowance.
Vercel You are building with Next.js or another supported framework and want its integrated build and deployment behavior. Vercel Hobby is described as non-commercial; review plan terms if the site is for a business.

This is a feature-fit recommendation, not a ranking based on measured setup time, ease of use, uptime, or speed. No comparative beginner usability test or independent performance benchmark is established by the published material cited here.

Compare the details that affect your project

Site type and framework

All three can host static HTML, CSS, and JavaScript. If you plan to use server-side features or functions, check the exact framework and runtime support. Vercel’s documented Next.js integration and runtime options may suit a framework-based project; Netlify’s built-in workflow features may suit a static site that needs forms. Do not choose a platform on the assumption that static-site hosting automatically supplies a backend.

Publishing and previews

GitHub Pages can publish from a branch or a GitHub Actions workflow. Netlify and Vercel offer automated Git-based deployments and preview deployments. Netlify advertises unlimited deploy previews on its Free tier; Vercel advertises previews for commits. If you want to check a change before it becomes the live site, previews can be useful. GitHub Pages’ documented publishing flow is based on branches or workflows rather than hosted preview deploys.

Free-plan limits and published figures

The figures below are provider-published plan details and service limits, not speed or reliability measurements. They are stated in the providers’ documentation and plan pages current to October 4, 2026; verify the live terms before choosing, because allowances and plans can change.

Provider and plan Published detail What it means for a beginner
GitHub Pages GitHub Docs lists a 1 GB maximum published site size, a 100 GB per month soft bandwidth limit, and a 10-minute deployment timeout. These are stated service limits, including a soft bandwidth threshold; they are not a promise of a particular traffic capacity or site speed. See GitHub Pages limits.
Netlify Free Netlify lists $0, 300 credits monthly, unlimited deploy previews, custom domains with SSL, and global CDN delivery. Its credit-based plans charge credits for production deploys, compute, bandwidth, and web requests; Netlify lists 15 credits per production deploy. “Free” means use within the published allowance, not unlimited usage. Netlify says accounts created before September 4, 2025 can remain on their existing plan, so a legacy account may not have the same terms. See Netlify pricing.
Vercel Hobby Vercel lists 100 deployments per day and a 45-minute build-time limit per deployment. Its comparison page lists Hobby at $0 per month and Pro at $20 per seat per month. Limits and plan prices are provider-published details, not performance results. Vercel describes Hobby as non-commercial. See Vercel’s plan comparison and Vercel limits.

The numbers are not directly interchangeable: GitHub Pages states site and bandwidth limits, Netlify meters several usage types through credits, and Vercel publishes plan-specific limits. Compare the limits that match your expected build and traffic rather than choosing solely by the advertised starting price.

Commercial use

Check the terms of the exact plan if you intend to use the site for a business. GitHub says Pages is not permitted as free hosting for sites primarily directed at facilitating commercial transactions or commercial SaaS. Vercel’s comparison guide says Hobby is non-commercial. These restrictions make a free personal-site plan a poor assumption for a business project; confirm current provider terms before relying on it. Netlify’s cited pricing page describes its Free allowance, but the cited material does not establish a comparable commercial-use rule here.

A practical way to decide

  1. Identify what you are building. For plain HTML, CSS, and JavaScript, any of the three may work. If you need a framework, server-side behavior, or functions, verify the specific support first.
  2. Match the publishing workflow to your habits. If your files are already in GitHub and a branch- or Actions-based publishing flow is enough, start with GitHub Pages. If you want preview deployments, consider Netlify or Vercel.
  3. Check whether a platform feature removes real work. Netlify may be useful if its form or preview workflow meets a concrete need. Vercel may be useful if its framework integration fits your project.
  4. Check plan eligibility and usage. Review current limits, credits, and commercial terms for your likely use. A free starting price does not mean unlimited service or permission for every kind of site.

Is GitHub Pages, Netlify, or Vercel easiest?

There is no evidence-backed universal answer to which is easiest. A beginner who already manages code in GitHub may find GitHub Pages’ repository-based publishing the most direct fit; someone who wants previews or a particular built-in feature may prefer Netlify; someone working in Next.js may find Vercel’s integration more relevant. Those are practical matches to documented workflows, not results from a controlled novice test.
