GitHub’s official postmortems document substantial outages, including a worldwide disruption lasting 7 hours and 47 minutes on August 17, 2026. That is a reason to assess your continuity needs—not proof that every GitHub customer was affected equally or that another host will be more reliable. You can price a move only from your own seat count, services, migration scope and labor; public subscription rates alone do not establish the cost of leaving.

What do GitHub’s postmortems say about recent outages?

The incidents below differed in cause, duration and scope. They are useful evidence about possible failure modes, but they are not a complete reliability score or an apples-to-apples comparison with another provider.

Incident What GitHub reported Scope and qualification
August 17, 2026 GitHub reported a disruption lasting 7 hours and 47 minutes. In its August 20 update, it attributed the incidents to capacity failures: “Both incidents were capacity failures at their core. We failed to scale critical components before demand exceeded their capacity.” GitHub said services disrupted around the world included github.com, authentication, Actions, APIs, pull requests, issues and Copilot. The quotation is GitHub’s own assessment, not independent verification.
July 8, 2026 GitHub’s July availability report said data-resident Enterprise Cloud environments were unavailable from 15:07 to 22:13 UTC. Reported affected services included the web UI, REST and GraphQL APIs, Actions, Packages, Copilot and Git operations. The report specifies data-resident Enterprise Cloud environments; it should not be generalized to every customer.
May 21, 2024 GitHub described a seven-hour, 26-minute degradation following an upstream cloud-provider configuration change. Actions workflow updates were delayed, and GitHub Enterprise Importer customers experienced longer migration runs. GitHub reported no data loss.

In its August 2026 update, GitHub also reported 2.9 billion monthly commits, more than 3 million CPU cores and 120 petabytes of high-speed storage added, and roughly 58% of platform load served by Azure, including half of all Git operations. These are company-reported figures, not independently measured reliability indicators. The current status history is the place to check dated updates: when accessed on October 5, 2026, it listed an October 1 Actions job-delay incident and a September billing-address validation incident. A selected set of postmortems cannot establish how often your own workflows will fail or how GitHub compares with another host.

Should an outage prompt a move or a contingency plan?

Start with the failure you need to withstand. If the risk is losing access to Git history during a GitHub outage, a tested mirror or second remote may address that more directly than a full platform migration. If your team cannot work without GitHub authentication, Actions, packages, issues or project workflows, a repository mirror alone will not provide continuity for those services.

  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
  • Choose a backup or mirror when you mainly need a recoverable copy of repository history or a path to keep coding against a second remote.
  • Consider a broader continuity setup when access controls, build pipelines, packages, identity or project tracking also need a fallback.
  • Evaluate a full migration when your organization is willing to recreate access and workflows, validate imported data and coordinate a cutover in exchange for changing its platform dependency.

Decide which failure modes matter, how long your team can tolerate them and which services must remain usable. Then test the proposed fallback against those requirements. A second remote can reduce dependence on one Git host, but it does not remove dependencies on shared identity, CI runners, integrations or other services.

How do I back up a repository?

GitHub Docs says a mirror clone preserves a Git repository and its revision history. In a shell with Git installed, set the repository URL and destination directory, then run:

  1. REPOSITORY_URL='your-repository-URL'
  2. git clone --mirror "$REPOSITORY_URL" repository.git

Replace the quoted value with your repository’s clone URL and choose a destination name that suits your archive. A mirror is a Git repository copy, not an export of every feature attached to a GitHub project.

Include Git LFS objects and wikis separately

If the repository uses Git LFS, GitHub’s backup guidance instructs users to fetch all LFS objects as well. For a mirror clone, enter the mirror directory and run:

  1. cd repository.git
  2. git lfs fetch --all

GitHub also explains that a repository wiki is itself a Git repository and can be cloned separately. Include it in your backup inventory if the team relies on it.

Know what a mirror does not preserve

A mirror does not capture every hosted service or all repository-associated information. GitHub warns that migration archives omit some data, including Git LFS objects, discussions and packages, and says there is no supported documented way to restore those archives on GitHub. Inventory metadata and service dependencies separately, and test restoration rather than assuming that an archive is a complete account export. An external drive can be one optional place to store archives; one drive by itself is not a tested or robust backup plan.

How much would it cost to move off GitHub?

There is no defensible universal exit price. Build an estimate from your own inventory, then separate recurring destination spend from one-time migration and cutover work. On October 5, 2026, the public pricing pages showed the following figures:

Published plan figure Price shown What the figure does—and does not—tell you
GitHub Enterprise Cloud $21 USD per user/month for the first 12 months GitHub’s live pricing page offer at access on October 5, 2026. It is a time-limited first-year figure, not a general recurring rate or a full quote.
GitLab Free $0 per user/month GitLab’s live pricing page at access on October 5, 2026. A free plan price does not establish feature equivalence or migration cost.
GitLab Premium $29 per user/month, billed annually GitLab’s live pricing page at access on October 5, 2026. Annual billing terms matter when comparing it with another plan.
GitLab Ultimate Custom pricing GitLab’s live pricing page at access on October 5, 2026; no public per-user amount was stated there.

These are vendor-listed prices, not an apples-to-apples comparison. Feature sets, add-ons, billing terms, usage charges and support differ. Confirm live terms and compare the capabilities your organization actually uses before treating either figure as a budget.

Build the estimate from work, not a guessed total

Use this framework and assign each item a quantity, an owner and a labor or vendor-cost assumption from your own organization:

Cost area Inventory or estimate input Questions to answer
Destination subscription Seats, plan tier, add-ons, storage, CI minutes or compute, support and security products Which destination capabilities are equivalent to the ones you use today? Are there minimums, annual commitments, taxes or usage-based charges?
Repository migration Repository count and size; large files; LFS; wikis; issues and merge requests; archived projects; required metadata Which content must move, and how many batches and trial runs are needed? GitHub’s migration planning guidance notes that timing depends substantially on merge-request counts and recommends planning batches.
Access and organization redesign Groups, teams, permissions, memberships and any nested organization structure Who will recreate and verify access? GitHub says its GitLab importer does not migrate repository permissions, group settings or group memberships. GitLab’s nested group model does not map directly to GitHub organizations and teams.
Cutover and validation Change freeze or manual transfer of new changes; state checks; workflow checks; coordination time Who verifies the imported repository state and team workflows? GitHub recommends trial runs and says its importer does not support delta migrations, so new changes made during migration need a deliberate plan.
Workflow and service replacement Actions, packages, webhooks, project boards, security scanning, identity provisioning and integrations Which services must be replaced, reconfigured or retained? Their conversion costs depend on your setup; public plan prices do not quantify them.
Parallel operation Time with both platforms active, duplicated usage and staff coordination How long must the old and new systems overlap to validate workflows and give users a safe transition?
Resilience without full exit Mirror cadence, backup storage, restore drills and a second remote What cadence and recovery target meet your continuity need? Include test time and service dependencies, not just storage.

A useful worksheet equation is: first-year exit cost = destination subscription + migration labor + parallel-run/cutover labor + required feature replacements + backup/storage costs. Treat every term as organization-specific. Estimate labor by role and task rather than burying it in a single migration line item.

Is GitLab a reasonable alternative to evaluate?

GitLab is a plausible candidate for comparison: its pricing page lists public plans and says GitHub projects can be imported. That establishes an import path, not that every repository feature or organization setting transfers. The migration documentation cited here from GitHub explains migration from GitLab to GitHub; it should not be read as instructions or a guarantee for the reverse direction.

Compare candidate platforms on the requirements that determine your actual workload:

  • Per-user price and billing terms, minimums, custom pricing, taxes and usage-based charges.
  • Required CI/CD, security, package storage, project management, support, identity controls and data location.
  • Transfer coverage for Git history, issues, merge requests, wikis, LFS, packages and metadata.
  • Permission and organization models, including the work to recreate and validate access.
  • Who will operate, monitor and recover the destination, and whether a second remote would meet the continuity requirement with less disruption.

Test a representative project and workflow before committing to a broad move. A successful import of one repository does not establish that organization-wide permissions, integrations or operational processes are ready.

What should an engineering team do next?

  1. List the repositories, hosted services and workflows that must remain available during an incident.
  2. Decide whether the requirement is recoverable Git history, continued development, or a working replacement for the broader GitHub platform.
  3. Run a mirror and restore drill for a representative repository, including LFS and wiki content where relevant.
  4. If evaluating a destination, pilot representative repositories and workflows, track missing metadata and access work, and estimate cutover and parallel-run effort.
  5. Compare the resulting organization-specific first-year estimate with the risk and recovery requirements it addresses.
