Use git log to find commits and patches, GitHub Code Search to find code in indexed repositories, and ProjectMind—if you mean the Plaintext GmbH product—to explore architecture maps and code relationships. They answer different questions, so there is no universal winner. The name “ProjectMind” is shared by separate projects, and neither product identified here is established as a dedicated Git history search tool.
Choose by the evidence you need
| Question | Best starting point | What it returns |
|---|---|---|
| Which commit or patch changed this? | git log |
Commit history, messages, affected paths, and matching patches in a local repository. |
| Where is this code in a GitHub repository now? | GitHub Code Search | Matches in accessible repositories that GitHub has indexed, within its documented search scope. |
| How is this project organized, and how do components relate? | Plaintext GmbH’s ProjectMind, if that is the product you mean | Architecture maps, diagrams, and code navigation, according to its repository description. |
The distinction is the target: historical changes, current indexed code, or architectural relationships. Compare tools by their corpus, returned evidence, and setup—not by treating every kind of “search” as interchangeable.
Find historical changes with git log
git log is Git’s native interface for querying commit history in a repository available locally. Its documented filters can narrow results by revision range, path, or commit-message pattern. For command details, see the versioned git-log reference.
Track a file, including renames
Use --follow to continue the history of one file across renames. This is a single-file history option, not a general way to trace every file in a directory.

- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Search patch changes with -S or -G
-S<string>finds commits where the number of occurrences of a particular string changes.-G<regex>finds commits whose added or removed patch lines match a regular expression.
These options answer related but different questions: -S is about a change in occurrence count; -G is about matching added or removed lines. GitHub engineer Derrick Stolee describes the broader idea in “Git’s database internals II: commit history queries” (published August 30, 2022, updated September 21, 2022): “This post explores Git commit history as a database where ‘git log’ is the query language.”
Find code in GitHub with Code Search
GitHub Code Search is for locating code in repositories the signed-in user can access. Its scope includes public repositories that have been indexed and private or internal repositories for which the account has permission. GitHub’s documentation says not all code is indexed and that search currently covers default branches; a login is required even to search public repository code. It is therefore useful for hosted code discovery, but should not be treated as a complete search across every historical revision.

Identify which ProjectMind you mean
“Project Mind” does not identify a single product in the sources available. Plaintext GmbH’s ProjectMind repository describes a read-only architecture browser using AI-ready project maps, diagrams, code navigation, and MCP-connected agents. Its repository page is the place to verify mutable project details such as platform and version information.

A separate npm package, @nodemint/projectmind, documents a CLI command such as projectmind search <term> for searching its project map. The shared name and the word “search” do not establish that this CLI searches Git commits or historical patches. Do not attribute the npm package’s commands to the Plaintext GmbH product, or either product’s documented features to a generic Git history tool.
A quick workflow for picking a tool
- Need a commit, message, path, or patch? Start with
git login the repository you have locally. Narrow by revision, path, or message; use--followfor a single file’s rename history, or choose-Sversus-Gaccording to the patch question. - Need to locate code across GitHub? Use Code Search while signed in, and account for repository access, indexing, and the default-branch scope.
- Need an architecture map or component relationships? Confirm the publisher and product identity first. If you mean Plaintext GmbH’s ProjectMind, consult its repository description; a similarly named package is not evidence of the same capability.
Learn more about commit history
The official Pro Git chapter on viewing commit history explains history viewing, including path-limited queries and -S. It is an optional learning resource, not a prerequisite for using the tools.
