GitHub Copilot Autofix can generate explanations and proposed code changes for eligible CodeQL alerts that already exist on a repository’s default branch. The feature entered public beta for GitHub Advanced Security customers on July 16, 2024, and became generally available on August 14, 2024. It is now available for public repositories and for internal or private repositories covered by GitHub Code Security licensing; a separate Copilot subscription is not required.
What “historical alert” means
A historical alert is a CodeQL code-scanning finding that is already present on the repository’s default branch, rather than a new finding raised only in a pull request. Autofix addresses this existing security debt by generating a natural-language explanation and a suggested code change from the alert context.
GitHub announced the historical-alert workflow as a public beta on July 16, 2024 (GitHub Changelog). Copilot Autofix for CodeQL alerts was announced generally available on August 14, 2024 (GitHub Changelog).
How Copilot Autofix works
- CodeQL creates a code-scanning alert on the default branch or during pull-request analysis.
- When GitHub has a supported fix for that alert, the alert page displays Generate fix.
- Copilot Autofix uses the alert’s SARIF data, nearby source code, and help text for the CodeQL query to construct a recommendation.
- GitHub presents an explanation and a code diff. You can inspect and edit the proposed change.
- You can open a pull request containing the change, run your normal review and tests, and merge only after approval.
Historical alerts can also be handled through the Autofix API, which supports generating, retrieving, and committing suggested fixes. That enables teams to integrate remediation into their own security workflows instead of processing every alert manually in the web interface.
#1 Best Overall
- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Can you review the AI-generated change before merging?
Yes. The workflow is pull-request based: the generated diff is visible before merge, and developers can edit it. Treat it like any other security-sensitive code change. Review the data flow, confirm that the proposed behavior matches the intended fix, run unit and integration tests, and execute the repository’s usual security checks.
GitHub says it may withhold a suggestion when the proposed change fails syntax tests or safety filtering. A missing Generate fix action therefore does not necessarily mean the alert is invalid; it can mean that no supported or safe suggestion was produced.

Languages and query coverage
GitHub’s responsible-use documentation lists these supported language families: C#, C/C++, Go, Java and Kotlin, Swift, JavaScript and TypeScript, Python, Ruby, and Rust (GitHub security and quality AI features). Support is not universal within those languages. Fix generation covers a subset of queries in the default and security-extended suites, so an alert can be eligible for CodeQL analysis but still have no Autofix proposal.
| Question | What is established |
|---|---|
| Default-branch alerts | Supported historical alerts can receive an explanation and generated change. |
| Pull-request alerts | Supported findings can offer Generate fix during pull-request review. |
| Languages | C#, C/C++, Go, Java/Kotlin, Swift, JavaScript/TypeScript, Python, Ruby, and Rust are listed by GitHub. |
| Queries | Only a subset of queries in the default and security-extended suites has fix generation. |
| Custom queries | GitHub does not validate fixes for alerts produced by custom queries. |
How GitHub validates a proposed fix—and the important limit
GitHub says Copilot Autofix validates a generated change by re-running CodeQL with the code-scanning query suite. That check is useful, but it is not a complete proof that the patch is correct for your application.

GitHub specifically says it cannot confirm that a fix resolves alerts produced by custom queries or by the security-extended query suite. The validation statement also does not replace project-specific testing, code review, dependency checks, or runtime security testing. The practical rule is to regard every suggestion as an editable, reviewable patch, not as an automatic approval.

Who can use it and whether Copilot is required
- Public repositories: GitHub says the capability is available.
- Internal and private repositories: The organization or enterprise must have GitHub Code Security licensing.
- Copilot subscription: A separate Copilot subscription is not required for Autofix.
Access, repository visibility, and organization policy settings still determine whether the action appears for a particular alert. GitHub Advanced Security remains the relevant licensing context for covered private and internal repositories.

A safe operating procedure for teams
- Prioritize the alert: Confirm its severity, reachable data flow, affected component, and production exposure.
- Generate the proposal: Use Generate fix on the alert when the action is available.
- Inspect the diff: Check boundaries, error handling, validation logic, authorization, and compatibility with supported versions.
- Run verification: Re-run CodeQL and the repository’s tests, linters, build, dependency checks, and any security-specific tests.
- Review in a pull request: Ask a maintainer or security reviewer to examine both the alert and the proposed remediation.
- Merge deliberately: Merge only when the patch resolves the intended weakness without changing unrelated behavior.
Bottom line for old CodeQL findings
Copilot Autofix is a practical way to turn eligible historical CodeQL alerts into reviewable pull requests. It supports default-branch debt as well as pull-request findings, offers API automation, and does not require a separate Copilot subscription. Its usefulness depends on language and query coverage, and GitHub’s validation has explicit limits for custom and security-extended queries. Keep a human review and your normal test and security pipeline in the approval path.
