GitBucket is a self-hosted Git web platform written in Scala that brings Git repositories and collaboration tools into one application. The project’s README specifies Java 17 and documents a quick start using its WAR file. Its feature set includes HTTP/HTTPS and SSH repository access, Git LFS, issues, pull requests, wikis, LDAP integration, and plugins. The latest release identified in the project changelog is 4.48.0, dated September 20, 2026.
What is GitBucket?
GitBucket provides a web interface and collaboration features for Git repositories that you host yourself. The project describes its priorities as easy installation, extensibility through plugins, and GitHub API compatibility. See the official GitBucket homepage and project README for its current feature and installation details.
Teams can use it to browse repositories, edit files online, work with issues and pull requests, maintain wikis, and follow activity timelines with email notifications. It supports public and private repositories over HTTP/HTTPS and SSH, as well as Git LFS. User and group management, LDAP integration, and plugins round out the listed capabilities.
What do you need to run GitBucket?
The official README states, “GitBucket requires Java 17.” That is the stated runtime requirement; it is not a complete compatibility matrix for every Java release, servlet container, database, or plugin. GitBucket can also be deployed to a Servlet 3.0 container such as Jetty, Tomcat, or JBoss. The README notes that Jakarta EE is not yet supported. The developer build guide specifies JDK 17 or later for building the project, which is a development prerequisite rather than a broader runtime-support guarantee.

- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
How to install and start GitBucket
- Download the latest
gitbucket.warfrom the official project repository. - On a system with Java 17, run
java -jar gitbucket.war. - Open
http://[hostname]:8080/, replacing[hostname]with the host running GitBucket. - The documented initial login is
root/root. Change the default credentials as part of securing a new installation.
The default data directory is HOME/.gitbucket. For a basic file backup, stop GitBucket and copy that directory. This is the project’s documented basic backup procedure; plan and test an appropriate recovery process for your own deployment.
What to know before upgrading
The official changelog lists GitBucket 4.48.0, released September 20, 2026, as the latest release in the materials reviewed. Its changes include numeric account IDs for the GitHub-compatible API, an API for managing users by numeric ID, authentication-related API changes that may affect plugins, and a fix intended to prevent deletion of the last administrator. The 4.48.0 announcement says the release migrates the ACCOUNT table and asks users to verify plugin compatibility before upgrading; consult the official changelog for release details.

Back up before a 4.47.0 upgrade
GitBucket 4.47.0, released August 9, 2026, changes core REPOSITORY and ACCOUNT tables. The project strongly recommends a database backup before upgrading. Its 4.47.0 announcement also describes administrator controls for disabling repository creation by cloning an external repository, protections that block private addresses to help prevent clone URLs from reaching internal network services, and configurable password-reset link expiration.
Check the H2 migration caveat only if it applies
A separate changelog warning applies to users upgrading from GitBucket 4.42 or earlier who use the default H2 database: moving from H2 1.x to 2.x requires migrating the H2 data file. GitBucket’s automatic migration mechanism cannot perform that database-level change; the changelog directs affected users to dump and recreate the database as documented there. This is a version- and database-specific requirement, not a step for every upgrade.

Is GitBucket a fit for your team?
GitBucket may fit a team that wants to host Git repositories and common collaboration features itself, values its plugin approach or GitHub API compatibility, and can operate the Java and servlet stack required by its deployment. Before adopting or upgrading it, check the current project documentation for the runtime and deployment details you need, confirm plugin compatibility, and account for database backup and migration work.
If you are comparing self-hosted Git platforms, weigh the needs that matter in your environment: repository access methods and Git LFS, issues and pull requests, authentication and directory integration, API compatibility, plugin support, database operations, and runtime requirements. The materials cited here establish GitBucket’s features but do not provide a like-for-like comparison with other platforms.
