Git may be reusing an outdated credential from Windows Credential Manager, but the account, token, remote URL, or active credential helper could also be wrong. Check the remote and helper first, then erase only the matching saved credential and retry using an authentication method accepted by that host.
First confirm which remote is failing
From the repository, run:
git remote -vCheck the failing remote’s host and protocol. The steps below apply to HTTPS remotes. If the URL begins with ssh:// or uses an SSH-style address such as git@host:owner/repository.git, username-and-password credentials managed by wincred are not the authentication path to troubleshoot; check the SSH key and host configuration instead.
Do not copy a real token into a command, remote URL, ticket, or public log while diagnosing the problem. Credentials embedded in a remote URL can be exposed accidentally.
Check which credential helper Git is using
Git for Windows can use different helpers, including wincred and Git Credential Manager (GCM). They are distinct choices: wincred stores credentials through Windows Credential Manager, while GCM can support OAuth flows. The configured helper—not simply the fact that Git runs on Windows—determines how Git looks up credentials.

Run:
git config --show-origin --get-all credential.helperThis shows configured helper values and where each setting came from. There may be more than one: Git can consult helpers in order, and a helper that supplies a username and password can prevent later helpers from being consulted. A helper name may also refer to an external command that is unavailable in the installed environment.
If the command prints no helper, do not assume that wincred is active. If it prints multiple values or an unexpected helper, note the configuration source before changing anything; a setting can be inherited from a different configuration level.

Erase the stale credential for the affected host
Git usually removes an invalid saved password or token after an authentication failure and asks for a replacement, but it does not always do so. Erasing the matching credential is the documented way to make Git request credentials again when an invalid one remains saved.
When the active helper is wincred
Open Windows Credential Manager and remove only the saved credential associated with the remote host and account that failed. Avoid deleting unrelated credentials. If you cannot identify the matching entry, use the configured helper’s documented erase operation rather than clearing credentials broadly.

When another helper is active
Use that helper’s credential-removal or sign-out mechanism for the affected host and account. Do not switch helpers merely because authentication failed: changing the helper can alter where credentials are stored and how the host authenticates, but it does not repair an invalid account or token.
Retry with credentials accepted by that host
Retry the same HTTPS operation after removing the matching entry. Provide the correct username and the credential type required by the service. Some Git remotes accept a personal access token or OAuth access token in the password field; others have different requirements. Follow the host’s current authentication policy, including any required token permissions, organization authorization, or browser approval.

Do not assume that the error refers to GitHub or use a GitHub-specific token unless the remote host is confirmed to be GitHub. The remote URL identifies the service whose rules apply.

A fresh prompt followed by the same rejection suggests that simply removing an old saved entry was not enough. Check these causes in turn:

- Account identity: Confirm the username or account selected for this host is the one with access to the repository.
- Repository access: Verify that the account can access the specific repository, including any organization or project restrictions.
- Credential validity: Check that the password, token, or OAuth authorization is still valid and meets the host’s current requirements.
- Helper availability: Confirm that the helper shown by Git’s configuration is installed and available to this Git for Windows installation.
- Protocol: Recheck
git remote -vto make sure the operation is using the HTTPS remote you intended to troubleshoot.
A historical report of this error involved a particular Git for Windows and Git Credential Manager for Windows setup, where credentials were read from a store and then an erase attempt was made. That illustrates one possible stale-credential scenario, not a general diagnosis: the message alone cannot identify the helper behavior or root cause on another machine.
