Git gives you a local history of your project, so you can inspect what an AI assistant changed, save a known-good version, and experiment on a separate branch. You do not need a GitHub account to start: Git is the version control software; GitHub is one service for hosting Git repositories and collaborating.
What Git does—and what GitHub adds
Git records changes to files in a project as a history you can inspect and build on. That history can stay on your computer. GitHub hosts repositories online and adds collaboration features such as pull requests; a local repository does not have to be published there.
A commit is a snapshot in the project’s history. Before making one, you choose which changes to include by staging them. GitHub describes a commit as “a snapshot you take of your project at a particular point in time.” GitHub Docs: About Git and Getting started with Git.
A branch is a separate line of development for a change or experiment. When it is ready, you can merge it into the project’s primary branch. A pull request is a hosted review and discussion process for proposed changes; it is not required for local Git use.

Choose a visual or command-line workflow
| Approach | Good fit | Trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| GitHub Desktop | You prefer buttons and visual diffs for common Git tasks. | Less common or more controlled operations may require the command line. |
| Git commands | You are comfortable in a terminal or want direct access to Git operations. | You need to learn the commands and read their output carefully. |
GitHub’s beginner tutorial covers a visual route with GitHub Desktop and points to the command line for unusual or more controlled tasks. Either approach can support the same basic cycle: inspect, stage, commit, and review. GitHub Docs: Getting started with Git.
Set up a safe first repository
Use an existing project or create a small test project. With GitHub Desktop, follow its option to create a local repository; with the command line, open a terminal in the project folder and initialize Git with git init. GitHub’s tutorial walks through creating a local repository and makes publishing it to a remote optional.
Before uploading anything to a hosting service, check the repository’s visibility and access settings. A remote copy can make collaboration and off-device backup easier, but publishing also makes files available according to those settings. Local history alone does not create an online backup. GitHub Docs: Getting started with Git.
Use this small command set to save changes
Run the commands from the project directory. This sequence lets you inspect changes before selecting what belongs in a commit:
-
git status— see which files are new, modified, or staged.Rank #2

git diff— inspect unstaged edits. After staging, usegit diff --stagedto inspect what the next commit will include. -
git add <file>— stage a particular file’s changes, replacing<file>with its path. You can stage more than one file by naming each one. -
git diff --staged— review the selected changes before recording them.Recommended: Update Every Outdated Driver on Your PC in One Scan - Free →Recommended: PC Feels Slow? git commit -m "Describe the change"— save the staged changes as a commit. Use a short message that says what changed, such asgit commit -m "Add password reset form".
Prefer selecting files when practical. git add . stages applicable changes throughout the working directory, which could include generated, secret, or unrelated files in a project that is not configured carefully. Checking status and diffs first reduces the chance of including something you did not intend. Git documents the roles of status, add, and commit in its command overview and tutorial. Use a branch for a bounded experiment
A branch keeps an experiment separate from the primary line of development while you work. Branch names such as fix/login-error or try/new-layout help identify the purpose.
-
Check the repository’s current state with
git status. Start from the project’s primary branch and follow any project-specific instructions for updating it.Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy. -
Create and switch to a branch with
git switch -c fix/login-error, replacing the example name with a concise description. -
Make one coherent change, then inspect it with
git status, git diff, and, where applicable, the project’s own checks or tests. -
Stage and commit the change using the earlier sequence.

Branch conventions differ: GitHub’s beginner walkthrough uses main, while the Git project tutorial examples use master. Use the primary branch name already present in your repository rather than assuming one universal default. GitHub’s walkthrough returns to the primary branch before starting another branch. GitHub Docs: Getting started with Git; Git project: Git tutorial.
Review AI-assisted changes before saving or merging
Ask an assistant for a bounded change rather than an open-ended rewrite. Then inspect the changed-file list and diff yourself, and run the project’s checks when available. If the result is useful and in a known-good state, commit it; if not, revise it before committing or discard the experiment in a way that fits the repository’s current state.
Git makes recorded changes comparable with earlier project states, but it does not automatically prevent an assistant from damaging files, protect secrets, or guarantee that a rollback is safe. Recovery depends on what has been recorded and which files or commits you intend to keep. GitHub describes coding with an AI assistant as an option, not as a special Git policy. GitHub Docs: What is GitHub?
For some small changes, a team may allow direct commits; for larger or riskier work, it may prefer a pull request, checks, and human review before production. Those are workflow choices, not universal Git rules. Follow your team’s policy when there is one. B. Edwards, Vibe Coding.

Keep local history or add a remote?
-
Local-only: useful for recording and reviewing history on one machine. It does not share the repository or protect against losing that machine.
-
With a remote: a hosted copy can support collaboration and off-device backup. Review access and visibility settings before publishing.
To send local commits to a configured remote, use git push. That command publishes commits to the remote; it does not by itself decide who can access the hosted repository. GitHub Docs: Getting started with Git.
