To join a live Gimkit game, students usually do not need to sign in: open gimkit.com/join and enter the host’s game code, or use the host’s QR code or direct link. Signing in is for account features; educators need an account to create kits and host games.
Join a Gimkit game with a code, QR code, or link
The join process is the same whether you use a phone, tablet, or computer: use a web browser to open gimkit.com/join. Gimkit’s instructions describe this website-based process rather than a separate device-specific app workflow.
- Open gimkit.com/join.
- Enter the game code displayed by the host.
- Enter your name, or approve the nickname if the host uses Gimkit’s Nickname Generator.
- Wait for the host to start or admit you to the game.
If the host shares a direct join link, open it to bypass entering the code manually. You can also scan the host’s QR code; Gimkit says the host can display it by hovering over the game code. See the official QR code instructions.

Do you need a Gimkit account?
No, not just to play a live game or complete an assignment. Gimkit’s Account FAQ says: “Students can play your live games and assignments without needing an account or logging into Gimkit.”
| Your goal | Sign-in needed? | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| Join a teacher’s live game | Usually no for students | Go to gimkit.com/join and enter the code, or use the host’s QR code or link. |
| Use student account features such as Classes, XP, or cosmetics | Yes | Sign in to the student account. If school Google sign-in is blocked, ask school IT or use the available email-and-password option. |
| Create kits or host games as an educator | Yes | Create or sign in to an educator account. |
Gimkit lists Classes, earning XP, and purchasing cosmetics as reasons a student might choose to have an account. Educators need an account to create kits and host games. Gimkit’s account creation guide describes creating one with Google or email.

Sign in to your Gimkit account
If you already have an account, use the sign-in method associated with it. Gimkit’s account creation guidance covers Google or email accounts; use the matching method rather than creating a second account. Students joining a game without account features can skip sign-in and use the game code instead.
Reset a forgotten Gimkit password
If you use an email-and-password account and cannot remember its password, Gimkit’s password reset guide, updated May 19, 2026, gives this process:

- Two AAA batteries included
- 200 feet (400 ft. coverage)
- Battery Life Indicator - Answer Choice - Response Confirmation
- Cell phone style entry
- Go to the Gimkit login page and enter the email address associated with the account.
- Select Forgot Password and submit the request.
- Check that email inbox for Gimkit’s reset link and follow it to set a new password.
If the message does not arrive, check the spam folder. School email filtering or network settings may also block account emails; Gimkit suggests asking school IT to allow relevant sender domains. You can contact Gimkit support from the email address on the account.
When school Google sign-in is blocked
Gimkit documents a specific issue affecting some school-managed Google accounts used by students under 18: Google Workspace for Education controls may prevent Google single sign-on (SSO). A Workspace administrator may need to mark Gimkit as trusted. Because this involves school administrator settings, ask your teacher or school IT administrator rather than changing admin-console settings yourself.

- Lightweight, compact, grey "credit card" format.
- Dimensions: 3.3" L x 2.1" W x 0.3" H. Weight: 1.0 oz (with batteries).
- Durable, rugged case ensures maximum longevity under extreme conditions.

- Participants receive answer confirmation on their ResponseCard through two-way communication. Successful transmissions are acknowledged on the participant's keypad via a three second long visual green light signal.
Gimkit’s article on marking Gimkit as trusted was updated October 18, 2023. Its menu guidance may not reflect every current Workspace configuration, so the administrator should check the school’s current Google controls. If Google SSO is unavailable, Gimkit says email-and-password sign-in may be used; the account may need a password set through Forgot Password.

If Gimkit or a game will not connect
A connection failure is not necessarily a password problem. Gimkit recommends checking its service status and running its compatibility test. Its game-server troubleshooting guide, updated August 14, 2024, says school firewalls or proxy settings may block secure WebSocket connections or access to *.gimkitconnect.com, which Gimkit uses for game servers.
If those checks point to a school network restriction, ask the school’s IT department to review the firewall or proxy. Gimkit’s guidance does not establish that every connection failure has this cause, so the status and compatibility checks can help narrow down the issue.
