Choose the Gigabyte TRX50 AERO D Rev. 1.2 if your build needs its four M.2 connectors, eight SATA ports, or two rear USB4 Type-C ports. Choose the ASUS Pro WS TRX50-SAGE WIFI if its PCIe slot arrangement, SlimSAS connection, or other I/O better suits your workstation. Both are sTR5/TRX50 boards with quad-channel DDR5 ECC Registered memory support; neither is a universal winner.

These are specification-based trade-offs, not evidence of which board performs better under a real workload. The deciding details are your exact CPU, memory kit, card layout, storage plan, chassis, and operating system.

Choose ASUS when SlimSAS suits the build

The ASUS board lists three M.2 slots, four SATA ports, and a PCIe 4.0 x4 SlimSAS NVMe connection. That mix may fit a workstation designed around SlimSAS storage or ASUS’s particular set of expansion slots. Compare the supported drives and lane-sharing rules before planning to populate every connection on either board.

Which PCIe layout fits your cards?

Start with the cards you will install—not just the number of full-length slots. Record each card’s physical width, required electrical lanes, and preferred slot, then compare that plan with the board’s lane modes and spacing. The ASUS page specifies more slot positions, including slots operating at x8 and x4; Gigabyte lists three CPU-connected full-length slots, with two at PCIe 5.0 x16 and one at PCIe 4.0 x16.

Check CPU and memory compatibility before buying

Both manufacturers list support for Threadripper and Threadripper PRO processor families on sTR5/TRX50, but family-level support is not a substitute for checking the exact processor. Confirm the CPU against the current support list and the BIOS version required by the board before assembly.

Both boards provide four DDR5 slots and quad-channel ECC Registered memory support. Gigabyte states a maximum of 1 TB and up to 256 GB per DIMM on its page; ASUS says supported memory type, speed, and module population depend on the CPU and configuration. Check the current CPU-specific memory support list or QVL for your particular RDIMM kit and intended population. Do not infer a guaranteed operating speed from a headline specification.

Do not confuse the ASUS WIFI with the WIFI A

The comparison here is with the Pro WS TRX50-SAGE WIFI, not the separate Pro WS TRX50-SAGE WIFI A. ASUS publishes distinct specifications for the A variant, including different PCIe, M.2/SlimSAS, and rear USB configurations. In particular, the WIFI A page is not evidence that the WIFI board in this comparison has two USB4 ports or the A variant’s storage features. Check the suffix on the seller listing and the product label, and use the specifications for that exact model: ASUS Pro WS TRX50-SAGE WIFI A.

Account for networking, operating system, and case fit

Networking

Both boards list 10GbE and 2.5GbE wired networking, but they use different 2.5GbE controllers: Realtek on Gigabyte and Intel I226-LM on ASUS. Their Wi-Fi specifications also differ: Gigabyte lists Bluetooth 5.3 and 320 MHz, while ASUS lists Bluetooth 5.4 and 160 MHz. These manufacturer specifications do not establish real-world throughput or driver superiority. Check operating-system support, wireless feature requirements, and local rules for 6 GHz operation; Gigabyte specifically lists Windows 11 SV3 as a requirement for Wi-Fi 7 features.

Chassis fit

Gigabyte lists the board as E-ATX at 30.5 × 26.4 cm; ASUS lists CEB at 30.5 × 28.0 cm. Confirm that your case supports the specific board dimensions and mounting points, and check clearance and access for power, storage, and other connectors. A form-factor label alone does not guarantee fit.

Make the choice against your build checklist

  1. Confirm the exact board and CPU. Match the model suffix and revision, check the CPU support list, and verify the required BIOS.
  2. Map memory. Check the CPU-specific memory support list or QVL for the ECC Registered kit, capacity, and module population you intend to use.
  3. Draw the card layout. Verify electrical lane widths, slot spacing, bifurcation, and what changes when multiple slots are populated.
  4. Count storage connections. Match your planned M.2, SATA, and—on ASUS—SlimSAS devices to the supported drive sizes and lane-sharing rules.
  5. Check the rest of the system. Confirm rear and front I/O needs, operating-system drivers, chassis dimensions, and the power and cooling requirements of your CPU and cards.
  6. Recheck purchase details. Manufacturer specifications can change, and price and availability depend on where and when you buy. Compare the exact listing with the board’s current support documentation.

What the specifications cannot tell you

The manufacturer pages establish connector counts, advertised slot modes, and other specifications; they do not establish a real-workload performance, thermal, acoustic, stability, or reliability winner between these boards. Those outcomes depend on the complete build and workload, so choose on verified compatibility and the I/O your workstation needs rather than treating a specification count as a performance result.
