GhostCtrl was an Android backdoor reported in July 2017 and linked to the remote administration tool OmniRAT. Researchers described deceptive app installation as its route onto devices and reported capabilities that included stealing data, recording audio, manipulating files and controlling some device functions. The available reporting documents a historical threat; it does not establish that GhostCtrl is active or widespread today.
What was GhostCtrl?
SecurityWeek reported on July 17, 2017, that Trend Micro researchers had identified GhostCtrl, an Android backdoor that appeared to be based on OmniRAT. The UAE aeCERT advisory, published July 27, 2017, described it as an Android-specific OmniRAT variant. OmniRAT was described as multi-platform; GhostCtrl was focused on Android. SecurityWeek’s report and the aeCERT advisory are contemporaneous accounts of the threat.
In the samples described by SecurityWeek, GhostCtrl used misleading app identities such as “App,” “MMS,” “whatsapp” and Pokémon GO. A wrapper APK repeatedly prompted the user to install a decoded malicious APK. Once installed, the malware reportedly ran a service under the misleading name com.android.engine and contacted a command-and-control server for encrypted commands.
How did the reported samples reach Android devices?
The delivery method depended on tricking a person into installing an app, rather than silently arriving through an ordinary store installation. aeCERT said its described sample was downloaded externally, could not be installed through the Store, and required device settings to allow installation from unknown sources. The wrapper reportedly continued prompting for installation even after the user cancelled.

That account describes the samples in a 2017 advisory, not every possible route or later Android behavior. It does not establish what current Android versions would permit.
What could GhostCtrl do?
The reported command-and-control functions went well beyond passive spying. Depending on the version and capability being described, analyses said GhostCtrl could collect contacts, phone numbers, SMS and call records, SIM serial number, location, browser bookmarks and other device information. It could monitor sensor data, access or record audio, and in later-version descriptions record camera data.

Other reported commands could manipulate files, upload or download them, execute attacker-specified shell commands, open apps, send SMS or MMS, place calls, and change settings such as Wi-Fi, vibration, wallpaper or interface mode. Reports also described control of Bluetooth and other device functions. Trend Micro characterized the command format as flexible because commands could specify a target and content.
These are capabilities reported across analyses and variants; the sources do not show that every function was present or used in every infection.

This is a summary of the variant descriptions in the aeCERT advisory, not a guarantee that each sample had the full feature set listed for its version.
What can Android users do?
In its 2017 advisory, aeCERT recommended keeping devices updated, using updated security software, preventing installation from unknown sources, and backing up data regularly. In practical terms, avoid installing APKs from untrusted websites or links, review whether an app genuinely needs the permissions it requests, and keep a recoverable backup of important files. The advisory did not endorse a particular security product.

If you suspect an Android device is compromised, stop installing apps from the suspicious source, remove unfamiliar apps where possible, and use a trusted, current security tool or qualified support to assess the device. Preserve important data safely before considering a factory reset; a reset can erase local files and settings.

The cited reporting and advisory date to 2017. They do not establish GhostCtrl’s current prevalence, whether its command-and-control infrastructure remains active, or whether the described behavior works on present-day Android releases. They also provide no victim-count or prevalence statistic. GhostCtrl is therefore best understood here as a documented historical example of an Android backdoor, not evidence of a current outbreak.

A separate February 2017 report described a Telegram-branded Android app carrying OmniRAT, but that is a different reported incident and is not evidence that it was the same campaign as GhostCtrl.
