Ghost of Yōtei is a standalone PS5 action-adventure set about 300 years after Ghost of Tsushima. It moves the series to Ezo, introduces a new protagonist named Atsu, and builds on the earlier game’s open-world design with new weapons and mechanics. Jin Sakai does not appear, so you do not need to play Tsushima first to follow Yōtei.

Is Ghost of Yōtei a sequel to Ghost of Tsushima?

Not in the direct-story sense. PlayStation calls Yōtei a standalone experience and says Jin Sakai does not feature. The games share a world and a design lineage, but Yōtei centers on a different character and story rather than continuing Jin’s plot. Familiarity with Tsushima may help you recognize the series’ approach, but it is not required to understand Atsu’s journey.

How do the setting and story change?

From Tsushima to Ezo

Tsushima takes place on the island of Tsushima; Yōtei shifts north to the lands around Mount Yōtei in Ezo. Ezo is the historical name used for the setting, which is associated with present-day Hokkaido. Sony describes Yōtei as a story set in 1600s rural Japan and about 300 years after Tsushima. These are separate historical settings, not neighboring chapters in the same period.

From Jin Sakai to Atsu

Jin’s story gives way to Atsu, a new protagonist. Sucker Punch described the direction as “a new protagonist, a new story to unfold, and a new region of Japan to explore.” In its launch announcement, the studio framed Atsu’s tale as “a story of healing and redemption that runs deeper than vengeance.” That is the studio’s description of the story’s themes, not a claim that the games share a plot.

  • The rise of the Ghost: Seek support from old friends and new unlikely allies to reclaim Tsushima.
  • Mud, Blood and steel: challenge opponents with your katana for an immersive Samurai combat experience.
  • Become legends together: play with friends or via online matchmaking in a series of two-player story missions or four-player wave-based survival missions in the legends online co-op
  • A whole new island to explore: Travel to Iki Island to investigate rumors of a Mongol presence in a brand-new story with deeply personal stakes.

What changes in gameplay?

Yōtei carries forward the broad open-world action-adventure foundation of Tsushima rather than abandoning it. Sucker Punch says the newer game builds on the earlier visual foundation and adds mechanics, improvements, and weapons. Its announcements also mention Atsu’s allies and a mechanic that lets players glimpse her past.

Those details establish a direction, not a complete feature-by-feature comparison. The official announcements cited here do not support treating every combat or exploration system as new, or claiming that one game is objectively better. The clearest comparison is continuity in the overall design approach alongside new tools and mechanics for Atsu’s story.

Should you play Ghost of Tsushima before Ghost of Yōtei?

No. Yōtei is designed to stand on its own, and its central story does not depend on Jin’s plot. Play Tsushima first if you want to experience the earlier game and see how the series’ design developed; choose Yōtei first if Atsu’s story and its northern setting interest you more. Either order works for following Yōtei.
