Ghost of Yōtei is a standalone follow-up, not a direct sequel to Ghost of Tsushima. It moves the series to 1603 Ezo—present-day Hokkaido—with a new protagonist, Atsu, and a different revenge story. The games share open-world exploration and a wandering-warrior premise, but Yōtei changes the setting, combat options, and how you choose your next objective. You do not need to play Tsushima first.

Are the stories connected?
Yōtei is not a direct continuation of Jin Sakai’s story. It introduces Atsu, a new region, and a separate conflict. Sony describes the games as more than 300 years apart, so the shared “Ghost” identity and broad themes connect them more than a continuous plot does.

The official PlayStation FAQ says Jin does not appear in Yōtei’s main story. Sony’s August 2026 Complete Edition announcement notes that he is playable in the separate Most Wanted mode. That mode appearance does not make the main story a sequel to Jin’s journey.

Tsushima: Jin during an invasion
Ghost of Tsushima centers on Jin Sakai as he responds to the Mongol invasion of Tsushima. Its island setting and invasion provide the historical crisis around which Jin’s story unfolds.

Yōtei: Atsu’s pursuit in Ezo
Ghost of Yōtei takes place in 1603 around Mount Yōtei in Ezo, now Hokkaido. Atsu sets out to pursue the Yōtei Six, the gang responsible for her family’s deaths. Sucker Punch frames her journey as more than revenge: studio head Brian Fleming described it as a story of “healing and redemption.”
What changes in exploration and combat?
Both games are built around a player-directed journey through a detailed landscape. Sucker Punch said it wanted to retain Tsushima’s core pillars: playing a wandering warrior, exploring at your own pace, and highlighting the beauty of the world. For Yōtei, the studio says it placed greater emphasis on freedom in an untamed wilderness.

One concrete difference is the order of Atsu’s pursuit: players can choose which Yōtei Six target to go after first. The game also features bounties, weapon sensei, and campfires. Sucker Punch describes its weapon combat as more flexible and introduces new weapons. These are developer-described design changes, not a claim that one game’s combat is objectively better.
What is different about the PS5 version and editions?
Yōtei was built for PS5 and supports PS5 Pro. Sony lists DualSense haptics and adaptive triggers among its platform features; its launch notice also mentions PS5 Pro PSSR and advanced ray tracing. These are platform and feature descriptions, not comparative performance measurements against Tsushima.

Sony announced Yōtei’s PS5 launch for October 2, 2025. At launch, U.S. MSRP was $69.99 for Standard Edition, $79.99 for Digital Deluxe, and $249.99 for Collector’s Edition. Those were launch prices, not a statement of current pricing.
Sony’s August 2026 Complete Edition announcement listed a $69.99 U.S. price and a $14.99 upgrade for existing owners. It includes the main game, Ghost of Yōtei Legends, Echoes of Sekigahara, Most Wanted, and Digital Deluxe content. Sony gave October 1, 2026 as the global patch date, with October 2 in some territories; because availability and pricing can vary by region and change over time, check your local PlayStation Store listing.

Legends and online play
Legends adds cooperative modes for up to four players, with two-player Story missions, according to Sony’s 2026 announcement. Online multiplayer requires internet access, a PlayStation account, and PlayStation Plus.

No. Yōtei’s story follows a new protagonist in a different region and stands on its own. Tsushima is a natural starting point if you want background on the series’ original protagonist and its established themes, but it is not a prerequisite for understanding Atsu’s story.
