Start with one important Android user journey, make its data predictable, and test both what the app does and how the screen looks. Use Espresso for classic View-based screens, Compose testing APIs for Compose UI, and add screenshot capture plus a baseline comparison for visual regressions. A screenshot alone does not prove that the flow works or that the app is accessible.

What visual UI testing checks

An Android UI test launches an app or part of it, simulates user interactions, and checks the response. A behavior assertion might verify that tapping Save adds an item or that a confirmation message appears. A visual check captures the rendered screen and compares it with an approved reference image. The two checks answer different questions, so use them together.

Android’s UI testing guide, last updated March 5, 2026, notes that the range of API levels, form factors, and OS customizations can cause an app to render incorrectly or crash on some devices. Choose tests for the screens and configurations that matter to your users rather than trying to test every possible combination.

Choose a framework for the screen you are testing

Need Starting point What it is suited for
Exercise in-app interactions in a Views-based app Espresso UI actions and assertions, with synchronization for the message queue, AsyncTask work, and configured idling resources.
Test Compose screens and components Compose UI testing APIs Launching Compose content, finding UI nodes, performing actions, and checking results.
Interact with system UI, another app, or content outside the target process UI Automator Cross-app and system-level tests, plus capture of a screen, window, or element. Android’s modern UI Automator 2.4 API is explicitly under development, so verify its current setup and maturity before adopting it.
Compare appearance with an approved screen Screenshot-testing workflow Capturing an image and comparing it against a previously approved baseline. Select and verify a workflow compatible with your project; simply saving a screenshot is not a comparison.
Run a device matrix in a managed service Firebase Test Lab Scripted Espresso or UI Automator instrumentation tests, as well as code-free Robo exploration. Results include screenshots, videos, and logs.

Build one deterministic test for a critical journey

1. Choose a flow with a visible outcome

Pick a journey that matters, such as signing in, checking out, or saving an item. Keep the first test small: enter known values, perform the key action, and check the result the user should see.

Yojaro 4Pack Silicone Suction Phone Case Mount, Silicon Adhesive Smartphones Stand Sticky, Hands-Free Phone Accessories Holder for Selfies and Videos (Black & White & Translucent & Light Pink)
  • 【Strong Adsorption】The inspiration of the silicone phone suction case comes from the adhesive force of the octopus. Each suction cup phone mount is 3.15 inches long and 2.17 inches wide, with 24 independent suction cups providing a stronger and more stable suction force, so you don't have to worry about your phone falling during use.
  • 【Back of Phone Suction Grip】Remove the adhesive film on the phone suction cup and stick it on the phone case. You can then fix the phone on any smooth surface, which is very convenient. (The phone suction cup cannot be removed and reused after being attached to the phone case. It is recommended to attach it to a regular phone case, not a valuable one.)
  • 【Widely Used】Our non-slip silicone phone sticky grip mount attaches to almost any flat phone case and make it compatible with common mobile phones such as iPhone and Android. You can shoot, watch videos or video calls in the kitchen, gym, dance studio, bathroom and other places.
  • 【Capture the Wonderful Picture】Whether you are a TikTok creator or just like to share videos and photos, this phone suction cup can help you hands-free capture wonderful videos and photos for sharing with friends.
  • 【Note】You can fix the phone suction cup on a smooth surface such as a mirror or glass. If necessary, wipe the suction cup with a damp cloth to obtain stronger suction. Before releasing your hand, make sure the phone is firmly fixed. (Not applicable to rough walls, wooden surfaces, and other uneven surfaces)

2. Put the test in the Android test source set

Instrumented UI tests belong in the Android module’s src/androidTest/java source set. Keep production code testable by separating dependencies so that a test can substitute fake data or controlled services instead of relying on a live backend, changing account state, or unpredictable network responses.

3. Assert behavior with the framework that fits

For a View-based screen, Espresso provides onView interactions and assertions. Its documented synchronization waits for the main message queue, AsyncTask work, and configured idling resources to become idle; asynchronous work that is not represented by those mechanisms may need an idling resource or another explicit synchronization strategy. For Compose, use the Compose testing APIs to locate and interact with Compose UI. Use UI Automator when the flow genuinely crosses process or system-UI boundaries.

Apple EarPods Headphones with USB-C Plug, Wired Ear Buds with Built-in Remote to Control Music, Phone Calls, and Volume
  • SUPERIOR COMFORT — Unlike traditional circular ear buds, the design of EarPods is defined by the geometry of the ear. Which makes them more comfortable for more people than any other ear bud–style headphones.
  • HIGH-QUALITY AUDIO — The speakers inside EarPods have been engineered to maximize sound output and minimize sound loss, which means you get high-quality audio.
  • BUILT-IN REMOTE — EarPods with USB-C plug also include a built-in remote that lets you adjust the volume, control the playback of music and video, and answer or end calls with a pinch of the cord.
  • COMPATIBILITY — Works with all devices that have a USB-C port.
  • INTEGRATED MICROPHONE — A built-in microphone precisely captures your voice while you’re on the phone, taking a FaceTime call, or summoning Siri — so you’re always heard loud and clear.

4. Add a visual check and approve its baseline

Capture the screen at a known point in the flow, then compare it with a reference image that the team has reviewed and approved. Review changes when the baseline comparison fails: a difference may be an unintended regression or an intentional design update. Update the baseline only after confirming the intended appearance. If you only collect raw screenshots, label that as visual inspection rather than automated regression comparison.

Decide which configurations deserve coverage

Configuration changes can alter layout, text wrapping, system bars, and available space. Prioritize combinations that reflect your users and the risks of the screen, rather than multiplying every setting into a huge test matrix.

  • Orientation: include portrait or landscape when your app supports both or the screen is sensitive to available width.
  • Form factor: consider tablets, foldables, and other devices in addition to phones if they are part of your audience.

Firebase Test Lab identifies devices by factors including model, OS version, orientation, and locale, which can help map a selected test matrix to the configurations you intend to cover.

Run locally first, then broaden execution

Local emulator or device

Run the instrumented test during development on an Android Studio emulator or a connected device. This is the quickest way to diagnose a broken assertion, incorrect test data, or an unexpected screen before adding more configurations.

Robolectric when a JVM test fits

Robolectric can run suitable UI tests on the JVM. It is an option for faster feedback when the test does not require real hardware or system behavior; it is not a substitute for validating device-specific behavior that matters to the app.

Firebase Test Lab for a selected matrix

Test Lab runs scripted instrumentation tests on selected physical and virtual devices and returns artifacts such as screenshots, videos, and logs. Its Robo test can explore an app without test code as an initial exploratory pass, but it does not replace assertions for the critical journey you need to keep working. Firebase documentation states maximum test durations of 45 minutes on physical devices and 60 minutes on virtual devices. For console use, the Get Started guide says the project requires the Blaze pay-as-you-go plan linked to Cloud Billing; check Firebase’s current pricing and quota documentation before estimating costs.

Diagnose failures from the evidence

  • An interaction cannot find a view or node: check that the expected screen has loaded, that the test uses the correct selector or semantics, and that deterministic setup reaches the intended state.
  • A test races asynchronous work: verify that Espresso can observe the work through its supported synchronization, or register an idling resource for work outside its default idle conditions.
  • A screenshot differs unexpectedly: inspect the captured image and test configuration first. Confirm locale, orientation, device dimensions, system UI, and test data before deciding whether the app or the baseline is wrong.
  • A cloud test fails but the local run passes: inspect Test Lab’s screenshots, video, and logs; compare the device model, OS version, orientation, and locale with the local run.
  • A UI Automator setup does not match current guidance: check the current Android documentation because the 2.4 API is under development and implementation details can change.
  • Firebase screenshot capture setup needs permissions: follow the current instrumentation screenshot guide. It says to omit WRITE_EXTERNAL_STORAGE on Android 10 (API 29) and later.

Or skip the browser setup

Android app UI tests still need to run in an Android testing framework; ScreenshotNeo is useful when you also need website screenshots in a development workflow, not as a replacement for Espresso, Compose tests, or device execution. Its API can return an image or PDF for a URL in one GET request:

curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp

See the ScreenshotNeo API documentation. ScreenshotNeo removes cookie banners, popups, and chat widgets before a shot; bot checks, blank pages, and failed loads are never billed. It also provides an MCP server for AI agents to take screenshots, and includes 1,000 screenshots a month free with no card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000. Frequently Asked Questions

Does a screenshot test check accessibility?

No. A screenshot comparison checks rendered pixels against an approved image; accessibility needs its own checks.

Can Robo exploration replace an instrumented test?

No. It can explore an app without scripted test code, but it does not provide the targeted assertions for a critical user journey.
