To get started, open Meta’s WhatsApp Business Developer Hub, follow its current Cloud API setup flow, and establish the required business portfolio, WhatsApp Business Account (WABA), and business phone number. Send a test message before building the full integration; add a webhook separately if your application needs to receive messages or delivery-status events. Confirm live permissions, policies, pricing, and limits in Meta’s current documentation before launch.
What the WhatsApp Business Platform API does
The WhatsApp Business Platform, referred to as Cloud API in Meta’s developer materials, is Meta-hosted infrastructure for connecting business applications to WhatsApp. Developers can use it to send messages and integrate messaging with backend systems such as a CRM. Meta’s WhatsApp Business Developer Hub is the starting point for setup instructions, the API reference, webhook documentation, error codes, policy and rate-limit resources, pricing information, and support.
The central implementation choice is whether to integrate directly with Meta’s Cloud API or use a partner for onboarding or integration assistance. The Hub provides a partner directory; it does not establish that any particular provider is required or best for a given business. Compare support ownership, fit with your existing CRM or backend, operational control, capabilities, and total cost before choosing.
What you need before you start
Meta’s WhatsApp Cloud API collection identifies these core business assets:

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
- A Meta business portfolio.
- A WhatsApp Business Account (WABA).
- A business phone number.
The Cloud API Get Started flow can create these assets. You will also need a developer app and suitable access credentials to make API requests. Exact eligibility, number-registration steps, permissions, and app-review requirements should be checked in the current setup documentation; they are not established here as fixed requirements for every account or region.
Set up the API and send a first test message
- Open the official setup flow. Go to Meta’s WhatsApp Business Developer Hub and use its current Cloud API Get Started instructions. Follow the dashboard flow rather than relying on an old code sample for current settings.
- Prepare the business assets. Create or select the business portfolio, WABA, and business phone number required by your setup.
- Select the developer app and credentials. Record the phone-number ID and obtain an access token through the current Meta dashboard process. Use the live token and permissions guidance to determine the appropriate token type for your environment.
- Send a test message. Use Meta’s current examples or API collection and an eligible recipient. The Developer Hub lists test numbers, code samples, and a sandbox among its starting resources. A successful test confirms that your basic outbound request works; it does not by itself validate inbound handling or production readiness.
- Keep test credentials out of production. Treat sample tokens as setup aids, not production secrets. Store production credentials securely and plan how to manage their permissions, renewal, and access.
Meta’s collection states that user access tokens expire after 24 hours, while system-user tokens can last up to 60 days or be permanent. Because token rules and setup guidance can change, confirm the current details before designing credential rotation around those durations.

Add a webhook for inbound messages and status events
Outbound messaging and inbound event handling are separate parts of an integration. Sending a message is an API operation; receiving inbound messages or message-status updates requires a webhook endpoint. Meta’s collection explains that an app is subscribed to a WABA so events for its associated phone numbers are delivered to the configured endpoint.
- Configure a reachable endpoint. Set up the endpoint that your application will use to receive webhook events.
- Subscribe the app to the WABA. Use the current Meta instructions to subscribe the app and direct the account’s events to that endpoint.
- Validate against live webhook guidance. Confirm the current requirements for verification, signature checking, event payloads, retries, and delivery behavior in Meta’s webhook documentation. These details are version-sensitive and should not be inferred from a historical sample.
- Test inbound handling independently. Verify that your application can process the event types it needs before depending on webhook delivery in production.

Meta’s Node.js SDK quickstart is explicitly marked as an archived project. It illustrates the basic pattern of setting a phone-number ID, access token, and Graph API version, then sending a text message; it also notes that receiving messages involves webhooks. Treat it as historical example material, not a current SDK recommendation. In particular, do not copy its old Graph API version string into a new integration. Start from Meta’s live Developer Hub and current API reference instead.
