The DZone Refcard Getting Started with MyEclipse lays out a project-centered workflow: install the IDE, learn the workbench, create and edit a project, connect a build and source-control process, then deploy and debug on an application server. Because the refcard uses J2EE-era terminology and does not identify an exact release or publication year, treat its Pulse, archived update-site and server examples as historical guidance. For current installers, licensing and feature instructions, use Genuitec’s MyEclipse Learning Center.
What the DZone Refcard covers
Riyad Kalla and Jens Eckels’ DZone Refcard presents MyEclipse as an all-in-one commercial Eclipse distribution rather than a bare Eclipse installation. Its practical path is:
- obtain and install MyEclipse;
- learn views, perspectives and the workbench;
- create Java or web projects and edit source efficiently;
- add builders such as Maven or Ant when the standard builder is not enough;
- connect version control and plug-ins;
- deploy to an application server and debug from the IDE.
The refcard quotes a claim that MyEclipse had been downloaded more than 10 million times and calls it the “#1 commercial Eclipse-based IDE.” The page does not state a publication year, and those statements should be read as undated vendor/refcard language, not a current market ranking.
Install MyEclipse: historical routes and the current approach
The refcard describes three period-specific installation choices. They are useful for understanding older MyEclipse releases, but their labels should not be assumed to match a current installer.

Before you install
- Confirm the supported operating system, Java runtime and MyEclipse release in the current vendor documentation.
- Decide whether licensing is individual or managed by your organization.
- Choose a clean installation and workspace location rather than reusing an old workspace until plug-in compatibility is known.
- For managed teams, ask an administrator whether the organization uses MyEclipse Secure, a Delivery Hub, an Admin Console or a preconfigured software pack.
Current licensing and managed delivery
Genuitec’s current MyEclipse Secure documentation describes a team-delivery model built around a Delivery Hub and Admin Console. Administrators can configure software packs, request a 30-day trial license, publish installers through a portal and control activation. That workflow is separate from the refcard’s individual, historical installation examples, so use the portal instructions supplied by your organization.
Understand the workbench before building
MyEclipse inherits Eclipse’s workbench model. A view is a focused panel, such as Package Explorer, Problems or Servers. A perspective is a coordinated arrangement of views and editors for a task, such as Java development or debugging. Editors occupy the main work area; views provide navigation, metadata and controls around it.
A practical first-session checklist
- Open the project or workspace you intend to use.
- Locate project navigation, Problems, Console and Servers views.
- Switch to a Java, web or debug perspective when the task changes.
- Arrange views so build errors, server output and source are visible without repeatedly searching for them.
- Save the perspective after arranging it if your release provides that command.
Exact menu names and available perspectives vary by MyEclipse generation. The current Learning Center is the authority for release-specific labels.
Create a Java or Java EE project
The refcard’s central idea is a project-centered workflow: source, resources, builders, deployment settings and server associations belong to the project rather than to an ad-hoc folder.

Project setup sequence
- Use the New Project wizard and select the Java, web or enterprise project type that matches the application.
- Set the project name, source folders, output folders and target runtime when the wizard asks for them.
- Choose the Java facet or platform level supported by the target server and your build.
- Configure libraries and dependencies through the project mechanism used by your release, preferably the same mechanism used by the team build.
- Verify the project appears without errors in Package Explorer and Problems.
The refcard uses J2EE terminology. Modern documentation may use Java EE or Jakarta EE names, and the namespace and server compatibility must match the selected platform; do not mix a legacy J2EE project model with a Jakarta EE runtime without checking migration requirements.
Edit code faster with MyEclipse and Eclipse tools
Content Assist
Content Assist (often opened with the editor’s completion shortcut) proposes members, types, templates and imports based on the current context. Use it to discover APIs and reduce typing, but verify the selected type and package when multiple libraries expose similar names.
Formatting and import organization
Apply the project’s formatter rather than personal defaults. Organize imports after edits, then review removals when reflection, service loading or generated code makes a type appear unused.
Templates and generated accessors
Code templates insert repeatable constructs such as loops, comments or method bodies. The Java editor can generate getters and setters for fields. Generated code is convenient, but the project’s conventions should determine visibility, naming, null handling and whether a property should be exposed at all.

Keep editor assistance aligned with the build
Completion and validation are only reliable when the IDE’s classpath, source level and generated-source directories match the actual build. If the command-line build succeeds but the IDE reports missing types, compare project facets, dependency scopes and generated output locations before changing application code.
Choose the right build integration
The built-in project builder is adequate for simple projects. The refcard recommends Maven or Ant when dependency management, packaging or repeatable automation exceeds what the default builder provides.

Custom builders
The refcard describes builders that can run at clean, manual, automatic and post-clean stages. Use these stages deliberately:
- Clean: remove stale generated or compiled output.
- Manual: run only when a developer explicitly builds.
- Automatic: run when workspace resources change.
- Post-clean: perform work after the clean operation completes.
A builder that runs on every save can slow the workspace or overwrite generated files. Keep expensive packaging and integration tasks manual or external unless the team specifically needs automatic execution.

Deploy to an application server
MyEclipse supports the Eclipse server tooling model described by the refcard: define a server runtime, associate a project, then start, stop, publish and inspect the server from the Servers view.
Exploded versus packaged deployment

Deployment sequence
- Open the Servers view and create or select the target runtime.
- Check the runtime’s JDK, ports, server installation and supported Java/web specification.
- Add the project to the server.
- Choose the deployment mode offered by the release, then publish.
- Start the server and watch Console and Problems for classpath, descriptor or port errors.
- Open the application at its configured context path and test a representative request.
The refcard illustrates integrated Tomcat and Derby scenarios. Those examples are historical; current MyEclipse documentation also covers servers such as GlassFish, WebLogic, Tomcat and WebSphere/Liberty, subject to the release and server version you select.

Use Run As for normal execution and Debug As when you need breakpoints, stepping and variable inspection. Set breakpoints in source, start the application in debug mode, reproduce the request and inspect the suspended thread before continuing.
Debugging checklist
- Confirm the deployed classes correspond to the source open in the workspace.
- Set a breakpoint on executable code, not only on a line that may be optimized or skipped.
- Use the Debug perspective to inspect stack frames, variables and expressions.
- Read server and application logs in Console before assuming the breakpoint failed.
- Remove or disable temporary breakpoints after diagnosis.
If a breakpoint is never reached, verify that the request reaches the expected server, the application was republished, debug mode is active and source attachments match the running binaries.

Source control and plug-ins
The refcard describes CVS integration as built in and notes that additional source-control plug-ins can be installed. CVS is a legacy choice for many teams; select the source-control provider required by your organization and verify that its plug-in supports your MyEclipse release.
Eclipse plug-ins extend the installation with editors, language tooling, server adapters and source-control clients. Add extensions cautiously: check compatibility, licensing and update ownership, and keep a record of installed features so another developer can reproduce the workspace.
MyEclipse for WebSphere and RAD migration
Genuitec positions current MyEclipse as an alternative to IBM Rational Application Developer (RAD) for WebSphere and Liberty development, including RAD-project migration and plug-in access. That positioning does not establish that MyEclipse is universally cheaper or feature-equivalent. Evaluate the two products against your actual requirements.

Make a pilot workspace with a representative RAD or WebSphere project, build it from the command line, deploy it to the intended server and test debugging before committing to a migration.
