To get started with Jakarta EE 9, generate a Maven project with the official Jakarta EE starter, select EE 9 and the profile your application needs, then build and deploy it to a runtime that explicitly supports that version and profile. EE 9 is especially useful to learn the move from javax.* to jakarta.* or to maintain an existing EE 9 application. For a new project without that constraint, the official guide recommends choosing a newer release.

What Jakarta EE 9 changed

Jakarta EE is a collection of specifications for developing enterprise Java applications. Jakarta EE 9, released in 2020, was a functionally similar successor to Jakarta EE 8, but it made a consequential namespace change: Jakarta EE APIs moved from javax.* to jakarta.*. The Jakarta EE Platform 9 specification calls it “Predominantly, a tooling release” because it was intended to help development tools, teams, and runtimes support and test the migration. Read the Jakarta EE Platform 9 specification.

This change means EE 9 is not source-code compatible or binary compatible with earlier releases. For example, code that imported javax.servlet.* must use jakarta.servlet.* when moving to the corresponding Jakarta EE 9 API. The change affects more than the import lines: review dependencies, configuration, descriptors, and behavior as part of a migration.

How to create a Jakarta EE 9 project

  1. Generate the project. Open start.jakarta.ee, configure the project, and download the generated archive. The starter guide describes a Maven project with a standard source layout, a pom.xml, example code, and a Maven wrapper; the exact available options can change. See the official getting-started guide.
  2. Select the release for your goal. Choose Jakarta EE 9 if you need to learn that release, reproduce an EE 9 environment, or support an application tied to it. If you are starting without an EE 9 requirement, follow the guide’s recommendation to use a newer release. The official listing includes EE 10 and EE 11 as later releases and shows EE 12 as under development; check the current Jakarta EE specifications and release listing before choosing.
  3. Pick a profile that includes the APIs you need. Web Profile covers a smaller set of web application specifications; Platform includes a broader set. Core Profile was introduced in Jakarta EE 10, so it is not an EE 9 profile option. The EE 9 platform specification describes the version’s scope and requirements.
  4. Choose a Java version supported by both the platform and runtime. Verify the requirements for the selected release and the exact server version you plan to use. Do not assume a Java version listed as “latest” in a mutable guide remains suitable.
  5. Confirm runtime compatibility. Check the official Jakarta EE compatible products list for a runtime supporting your selected release and profile. Compatibility is tied to passing the Technology Compatibility Kit (TCK) and meeting licensing requirements; a server’s name alone does not prove support for EE 9.
  6. Build and deploy. Extract the archive, read its README, and run the Maven wrapper command shown there—commonly ./mvnw package on macOS or Linux, or mvnw.cmd package on Windows. Then follow the selected runtime’s deployment instructions. The generated project may include a simple REST endpoint, but the starter’s options and sample can change.

Choose the right starting setup

Decision Choose this when What to verify
Jakarta EE 9 You are learning the namespace transition or maintaining an application that requires EE 9. Runtime support for EE 9 and the selected profile; Java requirements; dependency and descriptor compatibility.
A newer Jakarta EE release You are beginning a project with no EE 9-specific constraint. Current release guidance, Java requirements, and a compatible runtime for the chosen profile.
Web Profile Your application needs the smaller web-oriented API set. That all required APIs are included and the target runtime supports this profile at the chosen release.
Platform Your application needs a broader set of Jakarta EE specifications. That the runtime supports the full Platform at the selected release and that the broader scope is necessary.

What to check when migrating to EE 9

Update namespace references and dependencies

Review source imports and references, then update libraries and build dependencies to versions that provide Jakarta EE 9 APIs. A global text replacement may miss dependencies or non-source references, and it cannot establish that application behavior remains correct.

  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

Review descriptors and schemas

The EE 9 specification requires support for schemas back to Jakarta EE 8. If your application uses older schemas, check the target server’s support rather than assuming they will work unchanged.

Treat bytecode transformation as an aid, not a complete migration

The specification identifies Eclipse Transformer as a tool that can assist with binary transformation. It does not guarantee that transforming a binary also updates every dependency, descriptor, configuration, or behavior. Review and test the complete application on the intended EE 9 runtime.

Check for removed technologies

The platform removed several technologies present in earlier releases. The Eclipse Foundation tutorial identifies:

  • XML Registries 1.0
  • XML RPC 1.1
  • Deployment 1.7
  • Management 1.1
  • Distributed interoperability from EJB 3.2 Core

Some technologies in earlier Jakarta EE releases were optional. Check the EE 9 specification for the status of a specific technology rather than assuming every component was required.

Which server supports Jakarta EE 9?

Use the official compatible products list and check the product’s specific version, profile, and Java requirements. Jakarta EE compatibility is established through TCK testing and license compliance, so confirm the exact combination you intend to run. A product that supports a later Jakarta EE release does not, by its name alone, establish that it supports EE 9.
