Gatsby is a React-based static site generator with a GraphQL data layer; once your page works locally, you can push the project to GitHub and deploy it through Netlify.
What you need before you start
Gatsby’s current setup guide lists Node.js 18, 20, 22, or 24, Git, Gatsby CLI v5 or newer, and a code editor such as Visual Studio Code. These version requirements can change; check the official environment setup guide if your installed tools differ.
For the deployment workflow described in the tutorial, you will also need accounts with GitHub and Netlify. You can create and run the site locally before setting those up.
Create and run your first Gatsby site
The current quick start uses npm init gatsby, which launches a prompt to help create the project. The tutorial also shows the Gatsby CLI command gatsby new; use the quick-start guide as the reference if the commands or prompts change.

Open a terminal and run
npm init gatsby. -
Answer the prompts to configure the site. The generated directory is named
my-gatsby-sitein the quick-start example; use the actual directory name you chose. -
Enter the project directory with
cd my-gatsby-site, replacing the example name if needed. -
Start the development server with
npm run develop. -
Open http://localhost:8000 in your browser. Gatsby serves a hot-reloading development environment there by default, so changes appear as you work.
If you have the global Gatsby CLI installed, you can use gatsby new to generate a starter project interactively. The CLI reference documents global installation as npm install -g gatsby-cli. The tutorial also notes that npm init gatsby is an alternative when the global CLI is not installed. See the tutorial’s first part and the Gatsby CLI reference.

Choose a starter or begin with the prompt
The prompt-driven route is a straightforward way to create a project without first choosing a separate boilerplate. A starter is useful if you want a working structure to customize rather than assembling every file yourself.

Use
npm init gatsbyto answer setup prompts and generate a new site. -
Use
gatsby newwhen you want to create a project from a starter. The Gatsby CLI can clone the boilerplate, install dependencies, and clear its Git history so the new project can have its own history.
Gatsby maintains a catalog of starters that you can customize. Choose a starter when its existing structure suits your site; otherwise, begin with the prompt-based setup and add features as you learn.

Understand what Gatsby adds to a React site
Gatsby is an open-source, React-based static site generator. Its GraphQL data layer lets a site query data from files, plugins, or connected sources and use that data to build pages. The result is a site generated for hosting rather than a page that must assemble all of its content through a live server request. Netlify’s overview also describes Gatsby as a React-based static site generator that uses a GraphQL API layer to pull data: Netlify’s Gatsby overview.
For a first page, concentrate on editing a React component and seeing it render locally. The broader official tutorial then introduces the concepts that make Gatsby useful for larger content sites:

Plugins and data: plugins to bring data into Gatsby, then GraphQL queries to access it.

The official Gatsby tutorial walks through these topics by building a blog. You do not need to learn all of them before making a first page; they become relevant as you add content, data sources, and page templates.

Deploy the site with GitHub and Netlify
The tutorial’s deployment path is local development, a GitHub repository, and a Netlify build. In that workflow, pushing changes to the repository’s main branch triggers a rebuild and redeployment.

Save your site locally and push the project to a GitHub repository.

Connect that repository to Netlify and let Netlify build the Gatsby project.

After the build completes, open the hosted site at the URL Netlify provides.

Gatsby’s tutorial describes Netlify detecting repository changes, building the project, and serving the finished site at a unique URL. For platform-specific setup and options, consult Gatsby’s hosting and deployment documentation, which covers adapters, zero-configuration deployments, headers, path prefixes, asset prefixes, and Netlify.
What to learn after your first page
Once you can edit a page and see the change locally, continue through the official tutorial in sequence: styling, plugins, GraphQL, MDX, programmatic pages, and dynamic images. This progression takes you from a simple React page toward a content-driven Gatsby site without requiring you to configure every feature at the outset.
