FluentPDO builds SQL through PHP methods on top of PDO; it does not replace SQL knowledge or the database connection itself. This guide follows the fpdo/fluentpdo project README’s Composer example, which installs envms/fluentpdo at ^2.2.0. Those names identify different parts of the package lineage, so do not substitute older lichtner/fluentpdo tutorial commands without checking compatibility.
Choose the package lineage before installing
FluentPDO package names have changed across releases and forks. The README associated with the fpdo/fluentpdo project identifies Composer as the preferred installation method and demonstrates requiring envms/fluentpdo. Its project repository is github.com/fpdo/fluentpdo; the envms/fluentpdo listing points to github.com/envms/fluentpdo.
This article uses that README’s Composer command and the EnvmsFluentPDOQuery namespace shown in its example. Older instructions, including a SitePoint tutorial that uses lichtner/fluentpdo at dev-master, are not interchangeable installation guidance unless you have verified their compatibility with your chosen package.
Install FluentPDO with Composer
From your project directory, run the command shown in the project README:

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
composer require envms/fluentpdo:^2.2.0
Composer resolves a release satisfying that constraint and records it in your project’s dependency files. The package metadata for fpdo/fluentpdo lists v2.2.4, released January 27, 2022. Check the package listing and the version Composer selects before starting a new project, because package metadata and available releases can change.
The project metadata lists PHP >=7.1 and ext-pdo as requirements, while the README describes its 2.x line as officially supporting PHP 7.3 through PHP 8.0. These statements have different scopes: a Composer requirement is not the same as a tested or officially supported PHP-version range. Do not infer support for later PHP versions from the minimum requirement alone.

Create a PDO connection and pass it to FluentPDO
FluentPDO uses an existing PDO connection. Create PDO with the DSN and credentials for your database, then give that object to Query. The following is a template, not a working credential set; replace the placeholders with values appropriate to your environment.
<?php
require __DIR__ . '/vendor/autoload.php';
$pdo = new PDO(
'mysql:dbname=YOUR_DATABASE;host=YOUR_HOST',
'YOUR_USERNAME',
'YOUR_PASSWORD'
);
$fpdo = new EnvmsFluentPDOQuery($pdo);
Composer’s autoloader makes the installed package classes available. For connection details, use the DSN format and credentials required by your database and PDO driver; the README’s short example uses a MySQL DSN. Avoid placing production secrets directly in source code.

PDO provides a common interface for database access, but the installed PDO driver and the database’s SQL dialect still matter. A query builder does not guarantee that every vendor-specific feature behaves identically across database engines. See the PHP PDO manual for PDO and driver information.
Build a first read query
A FluentPDO query can express the source table, a parameterized condition, ordering, and a row limit in a chain of methods. This example assumes the schema has a comment table containing article_id, and an article table containing id and published_at:

$query = $fpdo->from('comment')
->where('article.published_at > ?', '2024-01-01')
->orderBy('article.published_at DESC')
->limit(5);
The condition uses a placeholder for the date value rather than concatenating that value into SQL. FluentPDO’s smart join builder infers that the query needs the related article table from the comment.article_id to article.id relationship. The README’s displayed SQL includes a LEFT JOIN for that relationship. The automatic join depends on the schema relationship FluentPDO can infer; it is not a substitute for verifying that the generated SQL matches your schema and intended result.
Inspect, fetch, and execute deliberately
Constructing a query and executing a database operation are separate steps. The query-building chain describes the operation; use the selected package version’s documented API to inspect the generated SQL, fetch select results, or execute a write. The project README demonstrates displaying generated SQL, while the historical SitePoint walkthrough explicitly calls execute() for its delete example. Check the documentation for your exact version before relying on a particular method’s return value or fetch behavior.

For a read query, confirm that the generated SQL has the expected selected columns, join type, filter, order, and limit before consuming results. For updates or deletes, be especially deliberate: verify the condition and the affected scope before executing a statement against data you need to preserve.
Composer versus manual installation
| Route | What to do | Important consideration |
|---|---|---|
| Composer | Require envms/fluentpdo:^2.2.0, as shown by the project README. |
Composer resolves dependencies and supplies its autoloader. |
| Manual download | Follow the package’s manual installation instructions. | The package documentation calls for additional autoloading; do not assume the Composer setup applies unchanged. |
What the version information does—and does not—tell you
The package page for fpdo/fluentpdo records v2.2.4 as a 2022 release. The envms/fluentpdo listing has its own package identity and release history, and GitHub file metadata naming an author or copyright period does not establish present-day maintenance or compatibility. Likewise, a tutorial updated in 2024 can still show an older package coordinate. For a new installation, use Composer’s resolved dependency and the documentation for that exact package and release rather than combining instructions across lineages.
