Playwright Test’s built-in toHaveScreenshot() is a straightforward first step: it creates reference screenshots on the first run and compares subsequent captures. Treat each difference as a review prompt—not an automatic reason to accept a new baseline.
What automated visual testing checks
Visual testing is regression testing for rendered screens. A test drives an application into a chosen state, captures a screenshot at a checkpoint, and compares it with an accepted baseline. It can reveal unintended changes in layout, styling, or visible content that functional assertions may not detect. It complements functional tests; it does not replace them.
For example, a functional test may confirm that a menu opens. A visual checkpoint can also help reveal that the open menu is clipped or rendered in the wrong place. Applitools describes the baseline decision as accepting a new screenshot when a difference reflects an intended feature change, and retaining the old baseline when the difference indicates a bug: Overview of Visual UI Testing.
How to begin with Playwright Test
1. Pick a small, stable flow
Choose a page or component whose appearance matters, then identify a few representative states: for example, the initial view and the result of one meaningful interaction. Avoid trying to snapshot every screen at once. Start with states the team can reproduce consistently and understand when a diff appears.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
2. Add a screenshot assertion
In an existing Playwright Test, navigate to the state you want to protect and add toHaveScreenshot():
import { test, expect } from '@playwright/test';
test('account page visual appearance', async ({ page }) => {
await page.goto('https://example.com/account');
await expect(page).toHaveScreenshot();
});
Replace the example URL with your application’s test page. Playwright generates a reference screenshot on the first execution; subsequent executions compare the captured image with that reference. See the Playwright visual comparisons documentation for the current assertion behavior and configuration.

3. Review the initial baseline
A generated file is not automatically a trustworthy expectation. Inspect the image to confirm the page reached the intended state and that the screenshot represents the design you mean to preserve. Commit the reviewed baseline with the test so the comparison has a clear reference.
4. Run in a consistent environment
Screenshot output can vary with the operating system, browser version, browser settings, hardware, and headless mode. Keep the environment used to create baselines aligned with the environment used in later runs. Playwright specifically recommends using the same operating system and browser versions for visual regression tests: Playwright Best Practices.

5. Investigate diffs before updating
When a test reports a difference, compare the actual capture, expected baseline, and diff. Determine whether the UI change was intended or whether the test reached a different state, the environment drifted, or a defect appeared. Update a baseline only after someone has reviewed and approved the changed appearance.
Keep visual comparisons stable
Control test data and page state
Dynamic content such as timestamps, rotating promotions, user-specific data, or changing results can create differences unrelated to the UI change under test. Prefer stable fixtures and deterministic states. Make sure the page has finished the interaction and rendering needed for the checkpoint before capturing it.

Scope exclusions carefully
If a region cannot reasonably be made stable, a hosted visual-testing integration may provide a way to ignore it. Applitools documents ignored regions in its Playwright integration, along with full-page checkpoints and match-level options: Applitools integration with Playwright. Apply exclusions narrowly: ignoring too much can hide the very regression the test is meant to catch.
Make baseline ownership explicit
Use the same review process as other test artifacts: assign responsibility for investigating unexpected diffs and approving intentional changes. Put the check in the team’s normal test workflow so differences are reviewed alongside the change that caused them.

| ScreenshotNeo | A website screenshot API and MCP server. It accepts consent banners before capture and removes known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets; only clean shots are billed, with response headers identifying page verdict and billing status. | It captures website screenshots or PDFs; it is not a substitute for a reviewed visual-regression baseline and diff-approval workflow. |
| Playwright Test built-in comparison | Direct toHaveScreenshot() assertions and reference screenshots generated on the first run. |
Your team manages snapshot files and needs to control rendering-environment variation. |
| Applitools Eyes with Playwright | Documented eyes.check() checkpoints, full-page capture, match levels, and ignored regions. |
Adds a vendor service, setup, and current vendor terms to evaluate. |
| Percy with Playwright | The project documents a Playwright client package and a CLI workflow for uploading snapshots to a project. | Adds external-service setup; confirm current project configuration and terms with the vendor. |
For native comparison, see Playwright’s visual comparisons. The vendor integration details are documented by Applitools and the Percy Playwright project. Compare options based on whether review is local or hosted, how baselines are approved, how dynamic regions are handled, required browser and device coverage, CI workflow, and current cost and data-handling terms. Where ScreenshotNeo fits
ScreenshotNeo is useful when you need to capture a web page by API or let an AI agent request a screenshot through an MCP client. Its clean-shot behavior can reduce consent banners, newsletter popups, and chat widgets in captures. It is not itself a visual-regression test runner: you still need a baseline, a comparison, and a review process to decide whether a change is acceptable.
Or skip the browser setup
For an on-demand website capture, make one GET request:
curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp
See the ScreenshotNeo API documentation for request options. Cookie banners, popups, and chat widgets are removed before the shot; bot checks, blank pages, and failed loads are never billed. Its MCP server lets AI agents take screenshots. The free plan includes 1,000 screenshots a month with no card, and paid plans start at $5 for 3,000.

Visual testing is not accessibility testing
A screenshot comparison can show that a page looks different, but it does not establish that the interface is accessible. Automated accessibility scans can catch common issues such as contrast and labeling problems, but Playwright recommends combining automated checks with manual assessment and inclusive user testing: Playwright Accessibility Testing.
Troubleshoot unexpected differences
- Large changes across many screenshots: Check whether the operating system or browser version changed between baseline and test runs. Restore a consistent environment before updating snapshots.
- Differences in a changing region: Stabilize the test data or state first. If the selected integration supports ignored regions, exclude only the smallest region necessary.
- The first run creates a baseline you did not expect: Verify the URL, interaction sequence, and rendered state, then review the resulting image before treating it as an accepted reference.
- A diff appears after a deliberate design change: Confirm the updated appearance is intentional and review the resulting screenshot before approving a new baseline.
- A diff appears without an intentional UI change: Do not approve it reflexively. Check for environment drift, unstable content, and a test that captured before the intended state was ready; then investigate the application if those causes do not explain it.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can visual tests catch every UI bug?
No. They only check the rendered states and viewports your tests capture, so untested screens and interaction paths can still regress.
Should I use screenshot comparison instead of functional tests?
No. Use visual assertions alongside functional tests: one checks appearance, while the other verifies behavior and outcomes.
