To create an ASP.NET Core MVC starter app in Visual Studio Code, install the .NET 10 SDK, VS Code, and the C# Dev Kit extension, then run dotnet new mvc -o MvcMovie in the folder where you want the project. Open it with code -r MvcMovie. The steps below follow Microsoft’s .NET 10 tutorial for macOS, Linux, and Windows.
What you need before creating the project
Use the .NET 10 version of Microsoft’s getting-started MVC tutorial, whose prerequisites are Visual Studio Code, C# Dev Kit for VS Code, and the .NET 10 SDK. Install the SDK and extension before creating the app so VS Code can recognize and work with the project.
The instructions are for macOS, Linux, and Windows. Make sure the code command is available in your terminal; it is used in the second command to open the project folder.
Create and open the MVC project

In VS Code, open the integrated terminal. Change to the parent directory where you want the new project folder to live.

Create the project by running:
dotnet new mvc -o MvcMovieThe .NET CLI creates an MVC project in a new folder named
MvcMovie. -
Open that folder in the current VS Code window:
code -r MvcMovieThe

Handle VS Code’s first-open prompts
Workspace trust
VS Code may ask whether you trust the workspace. If you created the project yourself and recognize its contents, follow Microsoft’s tutorial and trust the generated .NET project files. Workspace trust is a VS Code safety feature; do not treat a prompt as a reason to trust files from an unknown source.
Build and debug assets
VS Code may offer to add build and debug assets when the folder opens. Accept the prompt to generate them. If it does not appear, open the Command Palette and select .NET: Generate Assets for Build and Debug. VS Code creates a .vscode folder containing generated launch.json and tasks.json files.

Where to go after the starter app
Microsoft describes this as the first tutorial in a series: “This is the first tutorial of a series that teaches ASP.NET Core MVC web development with controllers and views.” The next lessons develop the app by adding and scaffolding a model, working with a database, and adding search and validation. Follow the tutorial series when you are ready to build on the starter project.
Should a beginner choose MVC or Razor Pages?
If you have not settled on an ASP.NET Core UI approach, Microsoft notes that beginners to ASP.NET Core web development may find its Razor Pages tutorial an easier starting point. MVC, Razor Pages, and Blazor are distinct approaches; use Microsoft’s comparison of Razor Pages, MVC, and Blazor to assess which better fits your project rather than assuming one is right for every beginner.

Creating and opening the project locally does not publish it. If you later want to deploy an MVC application, Microsoft has a separate VS Code guide for creating, testing, and publishing an MVC app to Azure App Service. That workflow has additional prerequisites, including the current stable .NET SDK, VS Code, the C# extension, the Azure App Service extension, and an Azure subscription. These deployment requirements are separate from the .NET 10 tutorial setup above.
