To get eligible Windows 11 features sooner without installing pre-release builds, turn on Get the latest updates as soon as they’re available in Settings > Windows Update. It prioritizes available non-security updates for your device while regular security updates continue as usual. If that does not provide the preview you want, the next options are an optional production-quality update or a Windows Insider channel—each step brings more uncertainty.
Which route should you choose?
Start with the Windows Update preference if you want the least disruptive option. Consider an offered optional update next; choose Release Preview or Beta only if you are comfortable running preview builds. Experimental is for people willing to encounter actively developing changes and potential issues.
| Option | What you get | Risk and exit considerations |
|---|---|---|
| Latest updates preference | Priority for eligible non-security updates, fixes, features, and improvements; not an Insider preview. | Lowest-friction choice. Turn the preference off at any time; updates already installed remain. |
| Optional preview update | A production-quality update when Microsoft offers one for the device and release. | Not every device or release will have one. Availability remains subject to rollout. |
| Release Preview or Beta | Insider preview builds closer to a shipping release than Experimental. | Preview changes can have issues or change. Leaving or changing channels depends on the Windows version and circumstances. |
| Experimental | Earlier development builds, where Microsoft says new ideas and features are usually released first. | Greater uncertainty. Experimental (Future Platforms) requires a clean installation to leave or switch channels. |
1. Turn on the Windows Update speed preference
- Open Settings > Windows Update.
- Turn on Get the latest updates as soon as they’re available.
- Optionally select Check for updates.
Microsoft says this preference prioritizes the latest available non-security updates, fixes, features, and improvements for the device. It remains on until you turn it off. Microsoft also states: “Whether you set the toggle to Off or On, you’ll still get the regular security updates as usual.” Turning it off does not remove updates already installed. More changes can mean more restart requests, although updates that require restarts may sometimes be combined. Microsoft Support explains the update preference.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2. Look for an optional production-quality preview update
For some releases, Microsoft makes a preview update available through Settings > Windows Update > Advanced options > Optional updates. This is a production-quality Microsoft update, not an Insider enrollment. Check that screen only if you want an update Microsoft has offered for your particular device; there is no guarantee that every PC will be offered every preview update. Microsoft’s September 22, 2026 preview-update notes describe availability and installation options for that release.

3. Join Release Preview or Beta for Insider builds
- Open Settings > Windows Update > Windows Insider Program.
- Follow the enrollment prompts and select an available channel. Choose Release Preview or Beta if you want a preview closer to a shipping release rather than an earlier development build.
Microsoft describes Release Preview as access to the upcoming Windows release before broad release, along with advanced quality updates and certain key features. Beta is intended for people who want to preview upcoming features while receiving more reliable updates. Both are still previews: features may change, be removed, or never ship outside the program. Available channels can change as Microsoft updates Windows Insider. Review Microsoft’s Windows Insider channel guidance and Flight Hub build listings before enrolling.
4. Choose Experimental for earlier development builds
Experimental is intended for enthusiasts who accept a higher chance of issues in exchange for earlier access to ideas and features that are actively being developed. Use Flight Hub to see current build listings rather than assuming a fixed schedule; feature timing and channel contents can change.

Experimental (Future Platforms) is a special case: it is not aligned with a retail Windows release. Microsoft says leaving that track or switching to another channel requires a clean installation. Back up important files before recovery or reinstall work. Flight Hub and Microsoft’s channel guidance provide current details.
Why a feature may not appear immediately
Windows feature delivery is staged and eligibility-dependent. Turning on the speed preference prioritizes updates offered to your device; it does not override every rollout decision or guarantee immediate access to a particular feature. Microsoft may release a feature gradually, so two eligible PCs can receive it at different times. The same caveat applies when checking for updates: a check cannot install an update that has not been offered to that device.

Plan how you will leave a preview
Before enrolling, weigh how much early access matters against your need for a stable PC, tolerance for issues, and support requirements. Microsoft provides a stop-preview option for Beta, Experimental, and Release Preview users in supported circumstances. Switching channels may be possible without a wipe when the channels use the same Windows core version, but some changes require a clean installation. Back up important information before attempting recovery or a reinstall. Check Microsoft’s current Insider channel and exit guidance for the channel and build you use.
