Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFor a file-backed Python module, use Path(__file__).parent to get its containing directory. Use Path(__file__).resolve().parent when you need an absolute path with symlinks resolved and .. components removed.
Get the directory containing the current Python file
Import Path from the standard-library pathlib module, then take the parent of __file__:
from pathlib import Path
module_dir = Path(__file__).parent
__file__ identifies the pathname from which a module was loaded when that attribute is available. parent returns the containing directory by examining path components; it does not check the filesystem or resolve symbolic links. See the Python 3.14.8 data model and the Python 3.14.7 pathlib documentation.
Choose between a lexical, absolute, or resolved path
| What you need | Use | What it does |
|---|---|---|
| Containing directory as represented by the module path | Path(__file__).parent |
Returns the lexical parent; it does not resolve symlinks or normalize ... |
| An absolute path without resolving symlinks | Path(__file__).absolute() |
Makes the path absolute without normalization or symlink resolution. |
An absolute path with symlinks resolved and .. removed |
Path(__file__).resolve().parent |
Resolves the path against the filesystem. In non-strict behavior, a nonexistent remainder can be retained, so this does not by itself prove every path component exists. |
| The process’s current working directory | Path.cwd() |
Returns the working directory from which the process is operating; it is not necessarily the module’s directory. |
Python’s pathlib documentation notes: “Relative paths are interpreted relative to the current working directory, not the directory of the Path object.” This distinction matters whenever code reads or writes a relative path: the working directory depends on how the process was started, rather than on the location of the Python file.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Build a path to a resource next to the module
Join a sibling filename to the module directory with the / operator:
from pathlib import Path
module_dir = Path(__file__).resolve().parent
config_file = module_dir / "settings.json"
Here, module_dir is based on the module’s resolved location, while Path.cwd() refers to the process working directory. This example assumes __file__ exists and that settings.json is stored beside the module. If you want to replace the filename while keeping its resolved parent path, use Path(__file__).resolve().with_name("settings.json").

Account for contexts where __file__ is unavailable
__file__ is optional module metadata, not a universal Python global. The language reference says it may be missing for some kinds of modules or when a loader has no meaningful pathname. Code that may run in such a context should accept or derive an appropriate base path instead of assuming __file__ can always be accessed.
Locate sibling data in a PyInstaller bundle
PyInstaller 6.8.0 documents that its bootloader sets __file__ for bundled modules and recommends resolving it when locating sibling data. Its documented pattern is Path(__file__).resolve().with_name("other-file.dat"). See the PyInstaller 6.8.0 runtime information documentation. This guidance is specific to that documented PyInstaller behavior; do not assume every execution or packaging context provides __file__.
