After you launch or connect to a Puppeteer browser, call and await browser.version(). It returns a string describing that particular browser instance, such as Chrome/... or HeadlessChrome/...—not necessarily the version of whichever Chrome happens to be installed on the machine.
Get the version of Puppeteer’s browser
With the puppeteer package, launch the browser and call version() on the returned Browser object:

}Browser.version() is asynchronous and returns a Promise<string>. Await it before logging or using the result. The try/finally ensures the launched browser is closed even if code inside the block throws.
The returned string includes a browser name and version. Puppeteer’s API documentation gives examples such as Chrome/61.0.3153.0 and HeadlessChrome/61.0.3153.0. Those are examples of the format, not recommendations for which browser version to use.

Make sure Puppeteer is inspecting the Chrome you intend
browser.version() describes the browser represented by that Browser object. By default, puppeteer launches its downloaded browser; if your application needs to inspect another installation, select it explicitly at launch.
Use a specific executable

}Replace /path/to/chrome with the executable path for the host operating system and environment. Puppeteer also documents configuring the executable path through PUPPETEER_EXECUTABLE_PATH. A custom executable may work, but Puppeteer guarantees compatibility only with the browser bundled for that Puppeteer version.

Select a system Chrome channel
Puppeteer’s launch options also support a Chrome channel for selecting a regular system Chrome installation from known locations. Use a documented channel when that is the installation you want to inspect; otherwise, provide an explicit executablePath. The version call itself is unchanged.
Using puppeteer-core
With puppeteer-core, provide either executablePath or channel in the launch options. It does not select the bundled browser in the same way as the full puppeteer package.

Interpret the returned string safely
Do not assume the value is a bare semantic version such as 123.4.5. The documented examples include a browser-name prefix, and Puppeteer warns that the format may change in future browser releases. If you need to display the value, keeping it as a string is the safest approach. If your application must extract a version number, make that parsing tolerant of format changes and test it against the browser builds you support.
Also distinguish the browser version from the Puppeteer package version. This method reports the browser associated with the current Browser object; it does not report which version of Puppeteer your project installed.

Check browser compatibility before choosing an installation
Puppeteer documents that it downloads and works with Chrome for Testing from Puppeteer v20.0.0 onward, and publishes a supported-browser mapping. Check the mapping for the Puppeteer version used by your project rather than assuming an arbitrary local Chrome build is a supported match. The mapping is maintained over time, so consult the current supported-browser documentation when upgrading or debugging a version mismatch.
For example, the supported-browser page showed Puppeteer v25.12.0 mapped to Chrome for Testing 154.0.8037.57 when reviewed on 2026-10-03. That is a dated documentation mapping, not a claim about the browser installed on your machine or the version your application currently launches.

Troubleshoot common problems
browser.version is not a functionor no browser object is available: Call the method on theBrowserinstance returned bypuppeteer.launch()or a browser connection, not on the Puppeteer module or before obtaining a browser object.- The result names a different Chrome than expected: The method reports the browser instance Puppeteer launched or connected to. Check your
executablePath,channel, and environment configuration, then run the method on that instance. - The output has a prefix instead of only digits: This is expected; documented examples include
Chrome/andHeadlessChrome/. - Your parser breaks after a browser update: The returned string format is not guaranteed to remain fixed. Avoid treating it as a stable structured format; if parsing is essential, handle unexpected strings without crashing.
- A custom Chrome executable launches but behaves unexpectedly: Puppeteer only guarantees compatibility with its bundled browser. Check the supported-browser mapping for your Puppeteer version and use the corresponding supported browser where possible.
