To get started with Snap on Linux, first check whether your distribution already has snapd, the service that manages snaps. Install or enable it using your distribution’s official instructions, then install an app with sudo snap install <name>. Snap setup differs by distribution, so Ubuntu, Debian, and Linux Mint users should follow their respective guides.
What Snap and snapd do
A snap is an application package. snapd is the background service and command-line tooling that install, run, confine, and update snaps. As the Snapcraft daemon guide puts it, “The snap daemon, known as snapd, is the background service that manages and maintains your snaps.” Some Linux distributions include snapd; others require you to install or enable it.
Check whether Snap is available on your distribution
Open a terminal and try snap version. If the command returns version information, snap tooling is available. If it is not found, or commands report that the service is unavailable, consult the current Snapcraft instructions for installing snapd and select your distribution. Ubuntu 18.04 and later and several other distributions are listed as having snapd preinstalled, but availability and setup can vary.
Debian
The official Debian instructions give this installation sequence:

sudo apt updatesudo apt install snapd- Log out and back in, or restart, as advised by the guide.
The guide also describes installing the latest snapd snap with sudo snap install snapd and using hello-world as a smoke check. Follow the guide’s current directions for your Debian setup.
Linux Mint
The official Linux Mint guide notes that a nosnap.pref file blocks snap installation on Mint 20 and later. Its documented procedure involves renaming that file, updating package lists, installing snapd, and restarting or logging in again. Because this changes a system configuration file and is version-specific, use the linked guide’s current steps rather than applying a generic Debian procedure.

Ubuntu and other distributions
For Ubuntu and other supported distributions, check the Ubuntu snapd instructions or choose your distribution from the daemon installation guide. Do not assume that a setup command for one distribution applies unchanged to another.
Install and launch your first snap
Once snapd is available, install an application by name. For example, to install VLC:

sudo snap install vlc
VLC is only an example; substitute the name of the snap you want. You can check which snaps are installed with:
snap list
Launch the application from your desktop’s app launcher, or try its command name in a terminal. If direct execution does not work, use snap run <name>, replacing <name> with the snap’s name. Snap applications are linked under /snap/bin, which is added to the PATH in the documented setup.

Choose a channel and manage refreshes
A snap can be published on different channels, such as stable or beta. The channel determines which stream of releases your installation tracks. You can specify a channel when installing, or switch an installed snap with a refresh:
- Install from a channel:
sudo snap install <name> --channel=beta - Switch to stable:
sudo snap switch --channel=stable <name> - Switch to beta and refresh immediately:
sudo snap refresh --channel=beta <name>
Snaps refresh automatically by default. Snapcraft’s getting-started guide describes documented default behavior in which revisions are installed within six hours of reaching a tracked channel. Refresh schedules are configurable, so that timing is not a guarantee for every system. To check for a refresh manually, run sudo snap refresh <name>. To postpone refreshes, use snap refresh --hold=<duration> <name>, following the current documentation for supported duration formats and controls.

Understand confinement, permissions, and app data
Confinement controls what an installed snap can access. Most snaps use strict confinement: access to files, networks, processes, and other system resources is restricted unless an interface grants the needed access. Snapcraft explains that strict confinement uses Linux kernel security features including AppArmor, seccomp, and namespaces to limit access beyond the application’s permitted resources. Interfaces are how a snap can request specific capabilities, such as webcam, audio, network, or home-directory access.
Before installing an unfamiliar snap, inspect its details and connections:
snap info --verbose <name>shows detailed snap information, including confinement and interface information where available.snap connections <name>lists the snap’s connected interfaces.
Classic confinement is different: a classic snap has broad access to the host system, much like a traditional package. Installing one requires --classic, and publication requires manual approval. Canonical describes classic snaps as riskier because the standard sandbox protections are absent; see the classic confinement explanation and confinement guide. The --classic option does not convert a strictly confined snap into a classic one; the snap itself must be published as classic.
Some snap-specific user data may be stored under $HOME/snap. The exact location and arrangement depend on the application, so check the app’s documentation before backing up, moving, or deleting data.
