To get an Iraqi IP address while abroad, connect through a VPN server located in Iraq. Choose a provider that currently offers an Iraq location on your plan, install its official app, select Iraq, and connect. The resulting public IP may appear to websites as Iraqi, but it does not guarantee access to a particular service or make you anonymous.
How to get an Iraqi IP address
- Choose a VPN with an Iraq server. Check the provider’s current server list and confirm the Iraq location is included in your subscription. An account without an Iraq exit server will not meet this location goal. Proton’s Iraq server page says it offers servers in Iraq; this is the provider’s own product information, not an independent verification.
- Check plan restrictions. Proton says its Free plan does not include connection to an Iraqi server, so Proton users need an eligible paid plan for that location. This limitation is specific to Proton and should not be assumed to apply to every VPN provider.
- Install the official application. Download the app from a recognized app store or the provider’s official website. Proton lists apps for Windows, macOS, Linux, Chromebook, Android, iPhone, and Android TV. The United Nations Iraq digital-security guide advises care when choosing VPN software because services can pose privacy or malware risks.
- Select Iraq and connect. In Proton’s app, choose Iraq on the map or select an Iraq server from the server list. Other apps may present locations differently.
- Check the public IP and the service you need. Use a reputable IP-checking service to see whether the connection appears to be in Iraq, then try the target website or app. A site can block VPN traffic or use other signals to determine location, so an Iraqi IP does not guarantee acceptance.
What an Iraqi VPN connection changes—and what it does not
A VPN routes your internet traffic through a server operated by the provider. When that server is in Iraq, destination sites may see the server’s public IP address instead of the address assigned by your local internet provider. The United Nations Iraq guide describes a VPN as creating an encrypted tunnel and hiding the user’s IP address, but that description does not mean every VPN provider is trustworthy or that every online activity becomes anonymous.
- It can change apparent IP location: websites may geolocate the VPN server’s public IP to Iraq.
- It does not guarantee access: a site may block VPN connections, check other location signals, or restrict the account independently.
- It is not a promise of anonymity: the VPN provider handles your traffic, and privacy depends on its practices as well as your own accounts and device settings.
- It cannot restore service during a complete shutdown: a VPN needs a working network connection to reach its server.
Choosing and downloading a VPN safely
Do not assume that an app is safe just because it is marketed as a VPN or offers a free connection. The United Nations Iraq digital-security guide, published in October 2022, warns that free and paid VPN services may contain malicious software, sell user information, or cooperate with governments to provide information. It recommends downloading software only from recognized app stores and official sites. Treat this as general security guidance, not as a current ranking of providers.

Provider claims about features such as a kill switch, server locations, or a no-logs policy are not independent evidence of how a service performs. Proton’s Iraq page advertises features including a kill switch, Secure Core, and a no-logs policy; the available information here does not establish current audit scope, pricing, connection speed, or streaming results.

VPN use and internet access in Iraq: what is established
The available sources do not settle the general legal status of VPN use in Iraq as of October 2026. OpenVPN lists Iraq among regions with known legal or technical restrictions affecting OpenVPN products and says users are responsible for checking legality. That notice applies to OpenVPN products; it is not a comprehensive legal opinion about every VPN provider or use.
Freedom House’s 2024 Iraq report said a draft Communications and Media Commission digital-content regulation that might affect VPN use had not been adopted as of June 2024. Its 2025 report covers June 1, 2024 through May 31, 2025 and describes continued internet restrictions and disruptions, but it does not establish the current law in October 2026. Check current local rules before connecting.

Freedom House rated Iraq 41/100 in its 2025 Internet Freedom report and labeled the country Partly Free. That published index score describes the broader internet-freedom environment, not the performance or legality of an individual VPN connection. The 2024 report also recorded 66 internet outages implemented by Iraqi officials in 2023, more than any other country that year; this is historical context, not a current-year total. The 2025 report describes exam-related disruptions during its coverage period. A VPN cannot be relied on to overcome a complete network shutdown.

Does Proton provide an Iraqi IP address?
Proton says it offers servers in Iraq and explains how to select them in its app. Its Iraq page lists apps for major desktop and mobile platforms, and says its Free plan does not include Iraq servers. These are Proton’s own product claims; they do not independently establish server location, speed, privacy, or access to particular streaming services. Check the current country list and plan details before signing up.
